The best mobile banking apps in the US have stopped charging for the basics. Monthly maintenance fees, minimum balances and overdraft fees are gone at every account on this list, so the real differences now sit in the small print: what you must do to earn the headline savings rate, how many ATMs you can use for free, and whether your money is held by a bank or by a tech company that partners with one.
This guide is for anyone moving their paycheck to an app-first account, or adding a high-yield savings account alongside a big-bank checking account. We ranked six accounts on fees, savings rates and the conditions attached to them, FDIC protection, ATM access and app quality. All rates below are variable and were checked on October 29, 2026, against each provider’s own disclosures.

How we chose the best banking apps
We started with the app-first accounts Americans most often switch to, then read the fee schedules, deposit agreements, rate disclosures and FDIC wording for each one. App ratings come from the US App Store and Google Play on the date we checked. We did not open and fund an account at every provider for this guide; where we describe how an app works, it is from the providers’ own documentation, their app store listings and owner reviews, not from months of daily use.
We left out Discover Bank, long a favorite in rankings like this. After Capital One’s takeover, Discover stopped taking new applications for deposit accounts in early 2026 and its savings customers are being moved to Capital One 360 Performance Savings.
The best mobile banking apps, ranked
1. SoFi Checking and Savings
SoFi is a chartered national bank (SoFi Bank, N.A., Member FDIC), which removes one layer of worry straight away, and it pairs a fee-free checking account with one of the stronger savings rates from a big name. Savings earn 3.30% APY if you have an Eligible Direct Deposit, or if you pay in $5,000 or more of qualifying deposits in a rolling 31-day window. New members can add a 1.10% boost for up to six months, which takes the rate to 4.40% APY, and SoFi Plus subscribers ($10 every 30 days) get 4.70% on up to $20,000.
Through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program, deposits can be insured up to $3 million, well past the standard $250,000. There is also a direct deposit bonus of $50 or $400, depending on how much arrives in your first 25 days. The weak spots are a modest $50 overdraft buffer and no refunds of other banks’ ATM fees.
Price: $0 monthly fee; fees apply to outgoing wires and Instant Transfers
Pros
- 3.30% APY with direct deposit, plus a six-month boost for new members
- Up to $3M of FDIC cover through its deposit program
- 55,000+ fee-free Allpoint ATMs
Cons
- Rate falls sharply without direct deposit or $5,000 a month in deposits
- Android app rated 3.7, against 4.7 on iPhone

2. Ally Bank
Ally is the online bank that people who care about savings rates keep coming back to, and its main appeal is simplicity. The savings account paid 3.20% APY on October 28, 2026, with no minimum deposit and, unlike SoFi, Varo or Current, no direct deposit test to pass. Savings “buckets” let you split one account into goals.
The Spending Account (Ally’s name for checking) earns 0.10% APY, or 0.25% on balances of $15,000 or more, and charges no overdraft or maintenance fees. CoverDraft covers up to $100 when you overdraw, rising to $250 once you have $250 or more of direct deposits arriving two months in a row. You can withdraw free at 75,000+ Allpoint and MoneyPass ATMs, and Ally refunds up to $10 per statement cycle charged by other operators. Cash is the awkward bit: you add it with a barcode at Walmart, as Ally has no branches.
Price: $0 monthly fee
Pros
- 3.20% savings APY with no conditions
- No overdraft fees and up to $10 a month in ATM fee refunds
- 75,000+ fee-free ATMs
Cons
- No branches; cash deposits only through Walmart
- International transactions can cost up to 1%
3. Capital One 360
Capital One 360 suits people who want an app-led account without giving up a physical presence entirely. 360 Checking has no monthly fee, no minimum balance and no overdraft fees, with a choice of auto-decline, free transfers from savings, or no-fee overdraft once you are making regular deposits of $250 or more. There is no foreign transaction fee, which makes the debit card useful abroad, and you can withdraw free at more than 70,000 Capital One, MoneyPass and Allpoint ATMs, including in some Target, Walgreens and CVS stores.
360 Performance Savings has no minimum and applies the same rate to every balance; Bankrate’s rate tracker listed it at 3.20% APY on October 28, 2026. Capital One also runs branches and Cafés in parts of the country.
Price: $0 monthly fee
Pros
- No foreign transaction fee on the debit card
- 70,000+ fee-free ATMs plus branches and cafés in some cities
- Early paycheck up to 2 days with direct deposit
Cons
- Savings rate sits below SoFi’s direct deposit rate
- Checking interest is small
4. Chime
Chime is the biggest name in fee-free app banking, and it is built for people who have been stung by overdraft fees. It is a financial technology company, not a bank: accounts are held at The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. There are no monthly fees, no foreign transaction fee and 47,000+ fee-free ATMs. SpotMe covers overdrafts from $20 up to $200 without a fee once you get a $200 direct deposit, and MyPay lets you draw part of your pay before payday.
Savings rates depend on your membership tier: 1.00% APY as standard, 3.00% with Chime Plus ($200 single direct deposit or $400 in total over 34 days) and 4.00% with Chime Prime ($3,000 or more in 34 days), effective October 6, 2026. Out-of-network ATMs cost $2.50 plus the owner’s fee.
Price: $0 monthly fee; $2.50 out-of-network ATM fee
Pros
- SpotMe fee-free overdraft and paychecks up to 2 days early
- No foreign transaction fee
- Rated 4.8 from 1.6M ratings on the App Store
Cons
- Top savings rate needs $3,000 a month of direct deposits
- Instant MyPay advances cost $2 to $5

5. Varo Bank
In 2020 Varo became the first consumer fintech to win full approval for a national bank charter, so your money sits with Varo Bank, N.A., Member FDIC, rather than with a partner. Its savings offer rewards modest balances: 3.75% APY on the first $5,000 if you receive at least $800 of direct deposits in a month and end the month with a positive balance in all your Varo accounts. Everything above $5,000, and everything if you miss the conditions, earns 1.00% (rates as of October 5, 2026).
There are no overdraft fees; payments that would overdraw you are usually declined. Varo Advance offers $20 to $250 to start, rising to as much as $700, for a flat fee of $1.60 to $100 depending on the amount. The Varo Believe secured card helps build credit. Out-of-network and international ATMs cost $3.50 per withdrawal, and cash deposits of $20 to $500 are free at stand-alone CVS stores.
Price: $0 monthly fee; $3.50 out-of-network ATM fee
Pros
- 3.75% APY on the first $5,000 of savings
- Varo is a chartered bank, not a fintech partner
- Free cash deposits at CVS
Cons
- Only 1.00% on balances over $5,000
- $3.50 for out-of-network and international ATM withdrawals
6. Current
Current is aimed squarely at people living paycheck to paycheck, and its savings structure reflects that. You can open up to three Savings Pods, and each earns a 4.00% bonus on its first $2,000 (so up to $6,000 in total) once a payroll direct deposit of $200 or more lands within 35 days. Without that deposit the rate is 0.25%, and nothing is paid on money above $2,000 per pod. The bonus is paid daily by Current and taxed as other income on a 1099-MISC, not as bank interest.
Banking is provided by Choice Financial Group and/or Cross River Bank, Members FDIC. There are no monthly or minimum balance fees, paychecks arrive up to two days early, and direct depositors get fee-free overdraft and access to Paycheck Advance. Watch the extras: 3% on foreign transactions and $3.50 for out-of-network ATM withdrawals.
Price: $0 monthly fee; optional Current Max subscription
Pros
- 4.00% bonus on up to $6,000 with a $200 payroll deposit
- Fee-free overdraft and early paychecks
- 40,000+ fee-free Allpoint ATMs
Cons
- 3% foreign transaction fee
- Bonus rate stops at $2,000 per pod

How to pick a banking app: what matters and what to ignore
Check who actually holds your money. SoFi, Ally, Capital One and Varo are banks in their own right. Chime and Current are fintech companies that use partner banks, and their FDIC protection is “pass-through” cover that applies only if certain conditions are met. Both models are common, but if a fintech’s middleman fails, getting at your money can take longer.
Read the condition attached to the rate. Almost every headline APY here comes with a test: a direct deposit, a minimum monthly amount, or a cap on how much earns the top rate. A 4.00% rate on $2,000 pays less in a year than 3.20% on $10,000. If your income arrives irregularly, or you are paid by transfer rather than payroll, Ally’s no-strings rate may beat a higher conditional one.
Count the ATMs you will really use. “Fee-free” usually means fee-free within one network, such as Allpoint or MoneyPass. If you take out cash often, check the ATM finder for your neighborhood before you switch.
Use cash advances sparingly. Fee-free overdraft buffers (Chime, Current, Ally) are useful. Paid advances and instant transfers (Chime MyPay, Varo Advance, Current Paycheck Advance) add up quickly if they become a monthly habit.
What to ignore: capped cashback, points you will not redeem and estimated annual “value” figures that assume you use every perk.
Mobile banking apps: your questions answered
Is my money safe in a banking app?
If the app is a chartered bank or uses FDIC-insured partner banks, deposits are protected up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. With fintechs like Chime and Current, pass-through cover only applies if the account records meet FDIC conditions. SoFi offers up to $3 million through its insured deposit program, which spreads money across several banks.
Is Chime a real bank?
No. Chime describes itself as a financial technology company. Its accounts are held at The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., both Members FDIC, and savings are swept to a network of program banks.
Which banking app has the highest savings rate?
On October 29, 2026, the highest rates on this list came with conditions: SoFi new members could reach 4.40% APY for six months with direct deposit, and Chime Prime paid 4.00% to customers with $3,000 a month in direct deposits. For a rate without strings, Ally paid 3.20% APY. All of these are variable.
Do I need direct deposit to use these apps?
You can open every account without one, but direct deposit unlocks most of the good stuff: SoFi’s 3.30% rate, Chime’s SpotMe and higher savings tiers, Varo’s 3.75% rate and Current’s 4.00% bonus. Ally is the exception, paying its savings rate with no deposit requirement.
Which banking app is best for using abroad?
Capital One 360 and Chime both say they charge no foreign transaction fee on card purchases. Current charges 3%, and Ally lists up to 1% on international transactions. Overseas ATM withdrawals can still carry fees from the ATM owner.
Can I get paid early with a mobile banking app?
Yes. All six accounts here make direct deposits available up to two days before payday, depending on when your employer sends the payment file.
