Best Sweepstakes Casinos: Free Coins, Redemption and Where They’re Legal

The best sweepstakes casinos rated: how Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins work, redemption, which states ban sweeps play and free coin offers.

Sweepstakes casinos look like online casinos, sound like online casinos and carry the same slot titles you’d find in Atlantic City. Legally they’re something else: social casinos where you play with virtual coins, with a promotional sweepstakes layer that can end in a prize. That distinction is why they’re open in Texas and Florida, and why a growing list of states has moved to shut them down.

We read the terms of use, mail-in rules and restricted-state lists for four sweepstakes brands, then ranked them on how clearly they explain redemption, who they let in, the quality of the game lobby and what players report afterward. Below you’ll find our picks, a state-by-state legality table and a clear guide to how the coins actually work.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law. 18+ or 21+ depending on the brand. Play responsibly: if gaming stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

Funrize, FunzCity and NoLimitCoins share an operator, a terms template and a state map, so choosing between them comes down to the lobby and the daily promotions. RealPrize is the outlier on age, studios and app.

How sweepstakes casinos work

Every sweepstakes casino runs on two balances, and once you understand the split, the whole model makes sense.

The play coin goes by Gold Coins at RealPrize and NoLimitCoins, Tournament Coins at Funrize and Fun Coins at FunzCity. It’s the currency you get free on sign-up, top up with daily rewards and can buy in packages. It has no cash value and can never be redeemed. You play with it the way you’d play a slot app on your phone.

The prize coin is the sweepstakes side: Sweeps Coins at RealPrize, Super Coins at NoLimitCoins, City Coins at FunzCity and Promotional Entries at Funrize. You can’t buy it. It arrives free, bundled with coin packages, through promotions and through a no-purchase route such as a mail-in request. Winnings made with the prize coin are the only balance that can become a prize.

That structure is what keeps the model on the right side of most state laws. A traditional gambling offense needs three things: consideration (you pay), chance and a prize. Sweepstakes operators remove consideration by selling only the play coin and giving the prize coin away, with a free way in for anyone who doesn’t want to buy. It’s the same principle a soda brand relies on when it prints “no purchase necessary” under a bottle-cap contest.

It also explains why the language matters. You don’t deposit, you purchase coins. You don’t win cash directly, you redeem prize-coin winnings. Operators use these words because the law turns on them.

What happens when you buy coins

Here’s a realistic evening. A player in Charlotte, North Carolina, signs up at a sweepstakes site after dinner, collects a free starting balance and spins a few slots with play coins. Nothing has cost him a cent.

On Friday he buys a $10 coin package. He’s paying $10 for play coins; the prize coins bundled with the package are a free bonus. He switches to prize-coin mode and plays a low-stake slot. If his prize-coin balance grows, he can request a redemption once he clears the play-through shown in his account and passes identity checks. If it runs to zero, he spent $10 on play coins and an evening’s entertainment, which is exactly what he paid for.

That’s the honest way to think about any purchase: entertainment money you don’t expect back.

How redemption works

Redemption is where sweepstakes casinos differ most, and where most complaints come from. The broad process is the same at all four of our brands:

  1. Play your prize coins. Bonus prize coins usually need to be played through before they become eligible; your account shows the requirement.
  2. Verify your identity. Expect a government photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport and proof of address such as a utility bill. The A1 brands and RealPrize can also ask for proof of source of funds, such as a pay stub or bank statement.
  3. Request the prize from the redemption section of your account.
  4. Wait for processing. Times vary by brand and method, and the first redemption is usually slowest because of the checks.

Across the industry, minimum redemption thresholds and the value of each prize coin are set by each operator’s own rules, and none of our four publishes those numbers on its public pages. They appear inside your account. Read them before you buy anything, because a prize balance below the minimum can’t be redeemed.

Gold Coins and their equivalents can’t be swapped for prize coins and can’t be redeemed for anything, at any of these brands.

Free entry by mail (AMOE)

The “alternative method of entry,” or AMOE, is the legal backbone of the model: a way to get prize coins without buying anything. Funrize publishes the most detailed version we found. You handwrite a white, unlined 4×6 index card with your full name as it appears on your ID, your account email, username, address and a required statement, choose one Promotional Entry or five Free Plays, then sign, date and post it in a hand-addressed #10 envelope to A1 Development LLC #90122, 5830 East 2nd St., PMB 90122, Casper, WY 82609. One card per envelope, and typed cards are rejected.

FunzCity and NoLimitCoins state that no purchase is necessary but don’t publish a mail-in page, and we didn’t find one at RealPrize either. If free entry matters to you, ask support for the current instructions before you start.

This is the part of the market that moves fastest. Since 2025 a run of states has passed laws aimed squarely at the dual-currency model, and regulators in others have sent cease-and-desist letters.

The table below combines two things: what each brand’s own terms say, and what state law says. Where they disagree, the stricter rule wins. You’ll be blocked by the platform’s location check if you’re in a restricted state, and you shouldn’t try to get around it.

Several other states, including Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi and Pennsylvania, have seen lawsuits, new enforcement powers or regulator letters aimed at sweepstakes operators without an outright ban. Ban bills have also been filed in states such as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, and in Washington, DC.

Under all four brands’ terms, promotional play is open in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as in the regulator-action states marked “Open” above. The map can change at short notice, so treat any state with pending legislation as provisional.

A note on VPNs

Sweepstakes platforms check your device location, and the A1 terms require location services to be switched on. Using a VPN to appear to be in an eligible state breaks the terms of every brand on this page and risks a closed account and forfeited prizes. A VPN has real uses, such as protecting your connection on hotel or airport Wi-Fi, and our VPN guide covers them, but it must not be used to get around geolocation. Switch it off before you play.

How to pick a sweepstakes casino

Start with your state and your age. If you’re 18 to 20, RealPrize is the only one of our four that will take you. If you live in Delaware, Rhode Island, West Virginia or Wyoming, the A1 brands are closed but RealPrize’s terms are not. In California, Indiana, Maine or Maryland, the A1 sites offer free play only.

Read the redemption rules before you buy. Minimums, play-through on bonus coins and accepted redemption methods sit inside your account at all four brands. Two minutes reading them saves a frustrating discovery later.

Look at the free route. A brand that publishes clear mail-in rules, as Funrize does, is showing you that the no-purchase option is real.

Check the lobby, not the banner. RealPrize leans on NetEnt, Nolimit City and Relax. Funrize credits around 40 studios. NoLimitCoins is built for feature slots. FunzCity is a straightforward slot site. Pick the one with games you’d play anyway.

Read what players say, carefully. Trustpilot gives a useful sense of patterns: RealPrize scores 4.2, FunzCity 4.4 and Funrize 4.1, while NoLimitCoins’ TrustScore has been withheld. The recurring complaints across the market are slow redemptions and verification hold-ups, so expect some paperwork.

Look at the support promise. RealPrize’s terms commit to replies within 12 hours. The A1 brands allow up to 72 hours by email, with 24/7 online support at FunzCity and dedicated US payment lines at Funrize and NoLimitCoins.

Sweepstakes casino bonuses explained

Sweepstakes welcome offers look generous because the play coin is plentiful by design. A 125,000-coin gift sounds like a fortune; it’s a large balance of a currency with no cash value. What matters is how much prize coin you receive and what rules attach to it.

Sign-up gifts. Funrize’s 125,000-coin Welcome Gift is the clearest headline of our four. RealPrize advertises a free welcome bonus, and the A1 sister sites offer free coins on sign-up. None needs a promo code.

Daily rewards. FunzCity’s daily coins and wheel, NoLimitCoins’ daily rewards and drops, and RealPrize’s daily rewards and RealWheel are the main ways to keep playing for free.

Purchase bonuses. When you buy a play-coin package, prize coins usually come with it as a free bonus. Think of the prize coins as the toy in the cereal box, not the thing you’re paying for.

Free-play caps. The A1 terms say winnings from promotional free plays can be capped. Before you celebrate a big free-play hit, check the promotion’s maximum.

A worked example. Say a player in Ohio buys a $20 package and receives a bundle of prize coins free. She plays them at a low stake and ends the night with a prize-coin balance above where she started. If that balance clears the play-through and the brand’s minimum, she can request a redemption after KYC. If it doesn’t reach the minimum, she can keep playing or wait for daily rewards to build it. If it falls to zero, her $20 bought play coins. At no point does buying more increase what she’s entitled to; it only buys more play.

Payments and purchases

You never have to buy anything at a sweepstakes casino, so there’s no minimum spend. If you do buy, RealPrize shows Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Skrill. NoLimitCoins shows Visa, Mastercard, Skrill and Apple Pay. Funrize and FunzCity show their accepted methods in the cashier, and A1 purchases appear on statements as A1 Development LLC. Purchases are final at the A1 brands, and coins expire after 12 consecutive months without play.

Set a monthly entertainment budget before you buy, and stick to it. Our money guides explain how.

Sweepstakes casinos vs real-money online casinos

A licensed real-money online casino takes deposits in dollars, pays winnings in dollars and is regulated by a state gaming commission such as the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Only a small number of states, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan, allow them. Sweepstakes casinos aren’t licensed by state gaming regulators because they say they never take a wager. You get wider access, but you give up the regulator, the formal complaints process and the dollar-for-dollar clarity. If you live in a state with legal online casinos, our online casinos hub compares the licensed options. For event contracts on sports and politics, which run under federal CFTC oversight rather than state gaming law, see our prediction markets hub.

Responsible play

Sweepstakes play is entertainment, and the coin model can blur how much money you’re spending. Every brand on this page offers tools to help:

  • Purchase limits. Funrize lets you set daily, weekly or monthly limits; lowering one takes effect at once, and raising one triggers a 72-hour cooling-off period.
  • Breaks. The A1 brands offer 24-hour and 7-day breaks.
  • Self-exclusion. Funrize offers self-exclusion for at least six months by email request. RealPrize sets out its tools on its Responsible Social Gaming page.

If play stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER, or contact the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org or its helpline, 1-800-522-4700. In New York, call 1-877-8-HOPENY.

How we rate sweepstakes casinos

We read each brand’s Terms of Use, responsible play page and, where published, mail-in rules, and checked its restricted-state list against state law. Scores weigh six things: clarity of redemption rules and KYC, age and state access, the free-entry route, the depth of the game lobby, app and mobile quality, and patterns in verified user reviews. We don’t score on the size of coin headlines, because play coins have no cash value.

Sweepstakes casino FAQs

What is a sweepstakes casino?

A sweepstakes casino is a social casino where you play casino-style games with virtual coins. It runs a promotional sweepstakes alongside, in which a free prize currency can be redeemed for prizes. It isn’t licensed as a real-money casino.

How do sweepstakes casinos work?

You play with a free play coin that has no cash value. A second, prize coin can’t be bought; it comes free with coin packages, promotions and mail-in requests. Winnings in the prize coin can be redeemed after play-through and identity checks.

What’s the difference between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?

Gold Coins are for play only and can never be redeemed. Sweeps Coins are the promotional currency that can lead to prizes. Brands rename them: Funrize uses Tournament Coins and Promotional Entries, FunzCity uses Fun Coins and City Coins, and NoLimitCoins uses Gold Coins and Super Coins.

Can I buy Sweeps Coins?

No. Sweepstakes rules don’t allow the prize currency to be sold. You buy play coins, and prize coins come free as a bonus.

Can I swap Gold Coins for Sweeps Coins?

No. None of our four brands lets you convert play coins into prize coins.

How do I redeem Sweeps Coins?

Play them through, verify your identity with photo ID and proof of address, then request a prize from the redemption section of your account. Minimums and timings appear inside your account.

Which states ban sweepstakes casinos?

California, Connecticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee have passed bans, and Idaho, Michigan, Nevada and Washington block them under existing law. Oklahoma’s ban takes effect November 1, 2026.

No. California’s AB 831 made dual-currency sweepstakes casinos illegal from January 1, 2026. The A1 brands offer free-play mode only there.

No. New York has banned them by law, and all four brands on this page restrict New York.

Can I play sweepstakes casinos at 18?

At RealPrize, yes, unless your state’s age of majority is higher. Funrize, FunzCity and NoLimitCoins require players to be 21.

Do sweepstakes casinos need a promo code?

Not at our four. RealPrize, Funrize, FunzCity and NoLimitCoins all give their welcome coins with no promo code needed.

What is a mail-in request, or AMOE?

It’s the free alternative method of entry that lets you receive prize coins without buying anything. Funrize publishes full instructions; at the other brands, ask support.

Why do sweepstakes casinos ask for ID?

Operators must confirm your age, identity and location before paying prizes, and to stop duplicate accounts. Expect a photo ID, proof of address and sometimes proof of source of funds.

Are sweepstakes casino prizes taxable?

Prizes count as income under federal tax rules, and some operators issue tax forms for larger redemptions. Keep a record of what you redeem and ask a tax professional about your situation.

Can I use a VPN at a sweepstakes casino?

Not to get around location checks. It breaks every brand’s terms and can cost you your account and any prizes. Use a VPN for privacy on public Wi-Fi only, and switch it off before you play.

Promotional play is legal there only until the ban takes effect. Oklahoma’s ban takes effect November 1, 2026, after which sweepstakes play with prize coins is prohibited.

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law. 18+ (RealPrize) or 21+ (Funrize, FunzCity, NoLimitCoins). Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.
