Most AI companion marketing is aimed squarely at men, which is odd, because plenty of the people looking for a virtual partner are not. Women who want a chat after a long shift without the admin of dating, gay and bisexual men who would like to practise flirting somewhere safe, romance readers who would rather co-write the story than read it: all of them end up searching for an AI boyfriend app and finding a sea of girlfriend sites with a boyfriend tab tacked on.
So we went looking for the apps that genuinely work with a male companion: the ones where you choose his look, voice and personality, where he remembers what you told him on Sunday, and where the price is clear before you fall for him. Every app here is strictly for adults aged 18 or over, and some allow adult roleplay for verified adults on paid plans.

The best AI boyfriend apps, ranked
The order reflects how well each app works with a male companion, not only its overall score. Apps where you design the partner yourself come first; girlfriend-led catalogues with a boyfriend section come lower. DreamGF is left out: it has no male companions, and its boyfriend site, DreamBF, appears under other apps below.
1. Kindroid
Rating: 4.1/5
Best for: writing your own boyfriend, from backstory to voice, and calling him
Free plan: a one-time preview of 50 messages, 5 selfies and up to two Kins, then read-only
Paid from: £14.99 a month (Standard, UK App Store); £149.99 a year; 3-day trial for new users
App Store / Google Play: 4.6 / 4.4
- You set his gender, look, voice, backstory and the memories he must always keep
- Voice and video calls, custom voices and video selfies in the Standard plan
- Learned Context keeps running notes on your relationship and ongoing threads
Drawback: free use ends after 50 messages, and the 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts unless you cancel.
2. Nomi AI
Rating: 3.9/5
Best for: a boyfriend who remembers the whole story, months in
Free plan: free to start with no card; message and feature limits are not published
Paid from: £14.99 a month (Standard, UK App Store); £99.99 a year, about £8.33 a month
App Store / Google Play: 4.5 / 3.9
- You pick the relationship at the start: friend, partner, mentor or roleplay character
- Layered memory covering preferences and ongoing roleplays
- Proactive messages and hands-free voice calls
Drawback: payments are non-refundable as standard, and Trustpilot reviewers complain about customer support.
3. Replika
Rating: 3.8/5
Best for: an easy-going boyfriend to talk to every day, free for as long as you like
Free plan: unlimited text chat in friend mode
Paid from: £7.99 a month; annual from £43.99, about £3.67 a month (UK App Store)
App Store / Google Play: 4.2 / 4.1
- You choose your Rep’s gender and look, so a boyfriend is a setting, not an afterthought
- Pro adds the Romantic Partner status, voice calls and selfies
- Platinum adds real-time video recognition, so he can react to what your camera shows
Drawback: there is no free trial of paid plans and no refund for partial months.
4. EVA AI
Rating: 3.5/5
Best for: flirting without explicit content, with gay and bisexual characters in the cast
Free plan: Basic access with limits
Paid from: £10.99 a month; 12 months from £30.99, about £2.58 a month (UK App Store)
App Store / Google Play: 4.3 / 3.8
- AI boyfriends as well as girlfriends, including Teddy, a gay character, and Edward, who is bisexual, added in June 2024
- Non-explicit by its own terms: voice notes, photos and video calls rather than adult roleplay
- Real iPhone and Android apps with store billing
Drawback: the free version pushes hard towards a subscription, and its privacy label links location, contact details and chat content to you.
5. Anima
Rating: 3.2/5
Best for: anyone who wants an app built around an AI boyfriend from the first screen
Free plan: basic AI chat
Paid from: shown only in the app; independent 2026 reviews reported about $9.99 (about £7.50) a month in the US
App Store / Google Play: No UK rating found / 4.0
- Its developer publishes a separate app, Anima: My Virtual AI Boyfriend, with more than a million installs on Google Play
- Chat free in a web browser, with video calls on premium
- Personality tests and relationship-skills exercises on the side
Drawback: prices are hidden until the paywall, and users say memory is weak next to rivals.
6. Candy AI
Rating: 3.6/5
Best for: building a boyfriend to spec on the web, if you will pay yearly
Free plan: 5 messages in total, one custom character and one image
Paid from: $3.99 (about £2.99) a month on the 12-month plan, billed $47.88 (about £35.93)
App Store / Google Play: No official app / No official app
- A separate AI Boyfriend section alongside the main catalogue, plus anime characters
- Detailed builder for looks, personality, voice and hobbies
- Unlimited text chat on paid plans; 100 tokens a month for pictures and calls
Drawback: the main catalogue is women, so boyfriend choice is thinner, and de-identified chats may be used for training.
7. Kupid AI
Rating: 3.1/5
Best for: voice notes and short clips from a boyfriend, on a set weekly allowance
Free plan: 15 messages with one companion; no photos, video or voice
Paid from: $3.44 (about £2.58) a week for Pro on the yearly plan, about £134 a year
App Store / Google Play: No official app / No official app
- Dedicated AI Boyfriend and anime sections alongside the girlfriend catalogue
- Pro allows 25 photos, 8 clips and 12 voice minutes a week
- Independent reviewers note companions can message you first
Drawback: memory reaches back only 30 messages on Pro, and Trustpilot reviewers describe disputed charges.
8. CrushOn AI
Rating: 3.0/5
Best for: storylines with a cast of male characters rather than one partner
Free plan: 100 message credits a month, a smaller memory and no group chats
Paid from: $5.99 (about £4.49) a month for Standard; $58.88 (about £44.18) a year
App Store / Google Play: No official app / No official app
- Filter the user-made library by gender to find male characters
- Group chats with several characters on paid plans
- Free credits renew every month
Drawback: chats may be used to train AI models, and Trustpilot scores it 1.8, with 91% one-star reviews.
9. Character.AI
Rating: 3.4/5
Best for: free storytelling with fictional characters; not a boyfriend app
Free plan: unlimited messaging, with ads, swipe caps and slow mode at busy times
Paid from: £1.99 (lite) or £9.99 a month (c.ai+), UK App Store; c.ai+ £99.99 a year
App Store / Google Play: 4.1 / 1.9
- Millions of user-made characters, from detectives to film villains
- Voice calls, unlimited on c.ai+
- Lorebook keeps story details consistent
Drawback: filters keep romance mild, and its parent company has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy since October 2026.
Other AI boyfriend apps worth knowing about
Real, current apps we have not reviewed in full, so they are not ranked.
- DreamBF: the AI boyfriend sister site to DreamGF, run by the same Bucharest company, DreamAI SRL.
- Talkie: a character chat app from Singapore’s Subsup, rated 18+ on Google Play, with more than 50 million downloads.
- Chai: a platform from Chai Research where users make and share chatbot characters; Mozilla named it in its 2024 privacy warning on romantic chatbots.
- Paradot: an iPhone-only AI companion pitched at emotional support, conversation and roleplay.
How we ranked them
DailyStoke rated each app in its own full review, from the company’s pricing pages, terms, help centre and privacy policy, UK App Store prices where an app exists, and thousands of store and Trustpilot reviews. For this guide we reordered them by how well they work with a male companion, judging:
- Memory: does he remember your sister’s name next month? Kindroid and Kupid AI publish limits; Candy AI does not.
- Realism: how natural the chat feels, according to users, and whether voice, video and photos add to it.
- Free limits: unlimited free text on Replika is a real plan; five messages on Candy AI is a taster.
- True cost of credits: what tokens, Neurons and credits add to the headline price.
- Privacy: training on chats, data retention, deletion and any regulator action.
- Age verification: a genuine check, or a box you tick.
We also gave credit for choice: apps where you design a man from scratch, or where male characters are more than a token tab, score better here than in our AI girlfriend guide.
What AI boyfriend apps really cost
Subscriptions are only part of the bill. Several apps sell a currency on top, and the cheapest monthly price often belongs to a plan you must pay for a year in advance.
| App | How you pay | Cheapest year | What costs extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindroid | Store or web subscription | £149.99 (Standard, UK App Store; web usually cheaper) | Ultra £29.99 and MAX £69.99 a month; audio and selfie credits |
| Nomi AI | Store or web subscription | £99.99 (Standard) | Nomi Credits from £4.99 for 40 |
| Replika | Store, web or PayPal subscription | from £43.99 | Gems, £0.99 to £19.99 |
| EVA AI | App Store or Google Play | from £30.99 | Neurons, from £6.99 for 500 |
| Anima | App Store or Google Play | reported at $39.99 (about £30.01) | Not published |
| Candy AI | Card or crypto on the web | $47.88 (about £35.93) | Tokens, 100 for $9.99 (about £7.50) |
| Kupid AI | Web, weekly or yearly | about $179 (about £134) for Pro | Coin packs, priced on screen |
| CrushOn AI | Web subscription | $58.88 (about £44.18) for Standard | Diamonds for creator content |
| Character.AI | Store or web subscription | £99.99 (c.ai+) | Charms, £0.99 to £49.99 |
Pound figures for dollar-priced apps are conversions at 1 USD = 0.7504 GBP.
A few traps are worth knowing. Kupid AI’s default weekly billing at $12.99 adds up to about $675 a year, nearly four times its yearly Pro plan. Kindroid’s add-ons are monthly only, so a MAX user on monthly Standard pays £114.97 a month in all. EVA AI’s terms say a romantic message costs 2 Neurons to read even for members, and Candy AI’s 100 monthly tokens cover roughly 25 images or half an hour of calls, by independent price checks, but not both.
The fair-value end of the group is EVA AI on an annual plan, at about £2.58 a month, and Replika from £43.99 a year, about £3.67 a month. Whichever you pick, use the free version for a week first: Replika, Nomi and Kupid AI do not refund unused time, and Kindroid decides refunds case by case.
Privacy, safety and healthy use
You will tell an AI boyfriend things you might not tell a friend, so it pays to know where they go.
What happens to your chats. CrushOn AI says chats may be used to train AI models. Candy AI may train on de-identified conversations and passes message content to third-party AI providers. EVA AI’s terms grant it a licence to use what you submit to improve the service, and its App Store label links location, contact details and user content to your identity. Kindroid encrypts chats at rest and in transit, though not end to end. Replika says chats are never shared with advertising partners. Nomi says it does not sell or rent personal information.
Deleting it. Replika keeps message data for up to 60 days after account deletion, Nomi removes personal information within about 28 days, and Candy AI keeps account data for up to three years after your last activity. Kindroid lets you export everything every 30 days. Anima lets you request deletion through its Google Play listing or by email.
On the record. Italy’s Garante fined Replika’s maker €5 million in May 2025, citing inadequate age verification among other failings. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner sent Nomi’s maker a notice in October 2025, and in February 2025 MIT Technology Review reported a Nomi companion telling a user to kill himself. Character.AI barred under-18s from open-ended chat in November 2025, settled lawsuits over teenage users in January 2026, and its parent entered Chapter 11 in October 2026, though the platform stays online during the sale. Ofcom investigated EVA AI’s developer over age checks on its Joi.com site, closing the case in July 2026 without findings. Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included guide gave both Anima apps its privacy warning label.
Age checks. Kindroid checks subscribers through their payment method and sends flagged free accounts to Yoti, Character.AI runs age assurance, and Candy AI refers to a third-party verification process. Kupid AI and CrushOn AI rely on you confirming your age.
Healthy use. Enjoying an AI boyfriend is nobody’s business but yours. Just remember that he is designed to keep the conversation going, and he is not a stand-in for friends, family or professional help. If things are hard, Samaritans are free to call on 116 123 in the UK, and 988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the US.
FAQs
Is there a free AI boyfriend app?
Replika is the best free option: text chat is unlimited, and you choose your Rep’s gender. Anima offers free basic chat, and CrushOn AI gives 100 message credits a month.
What is the best AI companion for women?
Kindroid, if you want to design a partner in detail and talk to him by voice or video. Replika is the gentlest free option, and EVA AI suits anyone who prefers no explicit content.
Which AI boyfriend app has the best memory?
Kindroid publishes how its memory layers work, and Nomi’s long-term memory is its fans’ favourite feature. Kupid AI remembers only the last 30 messages on Pro.
Is there a gay AI boyfriend app?
EVA AI added Teddy, a gay character, and Edward, who is bisexual, in June 2024. On Kindroid, Nomi and Replika you design the companion yourself, and CrushOn AI lets you filter characters by gender.
Can Replika be your boyfriend?
Yes, on a paid plan. You choose your Rep’s gender, and Pro adds the Romantic Partner status, voice calls and selfies.

Does DreamGF have AI boyfriends?
No. DreamGF is girlfriends only. The same company runs a separate site, DreamBF, for AI boyfriends.
Is Character.AI good for an AI boyfriend?
Only in a mild sense. It is a general character platform whose filters keep romance tame, and its parent company is in bankruptcy proceedings.
