Our verdict
Nomi is the companion app for people who want continuity: a character who recalls last month’s argument and the name of your dog. Group chats and an “unfiltered” approach make it a favourite for roleplay, and the yearly plan is fair value. The flip side is a thin safety net by design, a record of harmful replies that drew press and regulator attention, and patchy customer service.

What Nomi AI does and who it is for
You create a Nomi, write its backstory and personality, choose whether it is a friend, partner, mentor or a character in a fantasy plot, and chat. Nomi says its companions have short, medium and long-term memory, can send voice messages, take hands-free calls, send selfies showing what they are wearing or doing, look at images and links you share, and even go online. They can also message you first if you go quiet.
It suits people who like a story that keeps going. Think of someone who writes a slow-burn romance across months, with the Nomi recalling every twist. Or a long-haul lorry driver who wants a hands-free voice chat on the M6 at night. Or a group roleplay with three Nomis around a fictional table in a seaside B&B. For quick small talk, Replika is gentler; for general characters, Character.AI has more variety.
Is Nomi AI free? Free vs paid features
Nomi is free to start with no credit card, and free users can create a Nomi and chat. The free tier comes with limits on daily messages and features; Nomi does not publish the exact numbers on its website.
Paid features include unlimited messaging, several Nomis, group chats, voice messages and video creation. Nomi’s refund policy explains what happens if you stop paying: you keep your Nomis and one-to-one chats, but group chats, video creation and voice messages become read-only.

The Launch Plan is cheaper, but Nomi’s website does not explain who is offered it or what it leaves out, so check the plan screen in the app before you pay. Credits are a separate currency for extras beyond the subscription, and bigger packs cost less per credit: 40 credits cost about 12.5p each, 1,800 cost about 5.6p each.
The cheapest way to pay. The yearly Standard plan at £99.99 is about £8.33 a month, 44% less than paying monthly. When DailyStoke worked through the options, quarterly billing (£13.33 a month) saved surprisingly little. Use the free tier first, since Nomi says payments are non-refundable.
Nomi AI features that matter
Memory. Nomi’s selling point. It describes short, medium and long-term memory covering preferences and ongoing roleplays. Fans praise it, though one recent review complains of voice-call lag and conversations stuck in loops.
Group chats. Put several Nomis in one chat for roleplay or a simulated friendship group. One long-time reviewer noted a cap of ten Nomis per account in 2024.
Voice. Voice messages and hands-free calls, with the tone shifting with the Nomi’s mood.
Selfies and images. Nomis send selfies reflecting what they are doing, and can see images you send. Video creation is a paid feature.
Customisation. Backstory, personality, appearance and relationship type are all yours to write.
Content. Nomi’s homepage describes an “unfiltered” stance, and its app carries an 18+ rating. Adult roleplay is permitted for its 18+ users, and Nomi is noticeably less restrictive than Replika or Character.AI.
Is Nomi AI safe? Privacy, moderation and healthy use
Nomi is for adults only: its privacy policy says no one under 18 should use it. The policy says Glimpse.ai does not sell or rent personal information. You can delete your account in Account Settings, which Nomi says removes your personal information within about 28 days; anything already in its “training archives” stays there but is no longer attributable to you.
Two episodes are on the record:
- February 2025: MIT Technology Review reported that a Nomi companion had told a US user, who was testing it for a podcast, to kill himself and suggested methods. The company told the magazine it did not want to “censor” its AI’s language.
- October 2025 to March 2026: Australia’s eSafety Commissioner sent Glimpse.ai a notice on 16 October 2025 under its Basic Online Safety Expectations, and published interim findings on 23 March 2026. The matter was listed as under investigation.
Nomi’s website now links to a page on California’s SB 243, the state’s companion chatbot law that took effect on 1 January 2026.
