The trip itself is the easy part. It is the bits around it that go wrong: the bag that is two centimetres too deep for the cabin, the authorisation bought from a website that charged ten times the official fee, the taxi queue at midnight with two tired children. This guide covers the kit and the paperwork, with the brands we have reviewed and the official routes that cost less.

Airport Transfers: Fixed Price, Bus or Ride-Hail?
A pre-booked transfer buys you certainty: one price for the whole car, fixed before you leave home, and a driver in arrivals with your name on a sign. Whether it is worth it depends almost entirely on how many of you there are.
Worked Example: Malta and Lisbon, Costed
A family of four landing at Malta International Airport and heading for a hotel in St Julian’s would pay US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73) for a Kiwitaxi Comfort car, or US$9.75 (£7.32 / €8.68) each. The Airport Direct bus costs €3 a head, so €12 (US$13.47 / £10.11) for four. The bus wins on price; the car wins once you picture the suitcases and the walk from the stop.
Scale up and the sums tilt. Seven friends flying into Lisbon for a long weekend in Cascais could take a 7-seat minibus for US$76 (£57.03 / €67.69), about US$10.86 (£8.15 / €9.67) each, for a ride of roughly 30 minutes. Public transport takes around 90 minutes for under €5 a head. For a couple travelling light, the train is excellent value. For seven people with surfboards, the minibus is the obvious call.
What to Check Before You Book
- Waiting time. Kiwitaxi gives 90 minutes of free waiting at airports and ports and 15 minutes at hotels. Delays of under 30 minutes are absorbed; for anything longer, contact the driver or support yourself.
- Luggage. Standard bags are up to 160cm when length, width and height are added together. Surfboards, bikes, skis, golf bags and pushchairs must be declared, which can mean a bigger car.
- Child seats. You can add them at booking, but choosing the right seat for your child’s age and weight is your responsibility.
- Cancellation. Standard cars can be cancelled for a full refund up to 16 hours before pickup; Business, Premium and larger minibuses need 24 hours.
- Your phone. If the driver cannot reach you by the end of the free wait, they may leave and keep the fare. A travel eSIM installed before you fly means you are online the moment the wheels touch down.
Ride-hailing suits a couple with hand luggage at a big airport, but there is no one in arrivals with your name and you are exposed to surge pricing.
Visas and Travel Authorisations: Apply Direct, Pay Less
More countries now ask visa-free visitors to apply online before they travel. The forms are short, the official fees are modest, and a whole industry of private websites sits between travellers and the government portals. Some, like eVisas, are open about being a paid service. Applying direct on the official site is almost always the cheapest route.
| Authorisation | Who needs it | Official site | Official fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK ETA | Visitors to the UK who do not need a visa, Europeans and Americans among them | GOV.UK | £20 (US$26.65 / €23.73) |
| US ESTA | Visa Waiver Program travellers to the US, Britons included | esta.cbp.dhs.gov | US$40.62 (£30.48 / €36.18) |
| Canada eTA | Visa-exempt visitors flying to Canada, Britons included | canada.ca | CAD 7 |
| EU ETIAS | Visa-exempt visitors to Europe, such as Britons and Americans | travel-europe.europa.eu | €20 (US$22.46 / £16.85), free under 18 and over 70 |
The UK ETA rose from £16 to £20 in April 2026, and the ESTA fee moved to US$40.62 on 16 October 2026; an approved ESTA lasts up to two years or until your passport expires. Canada says most eTA applications are approved within minutes.
ETIAS is due to start in the last quarter of 2026, valid for up to three years. Until the EU switches it on there is nothing to apply for, so any website taking ETIAS payments before then is not the official system.
Worked Example: A Family Flight to Toronto
A British family of four flying Heathrow to Toronto each need a Canada eTA. On canada.ca that is CAD 7 per person, CAD 28 in all. Through eVisas, at its starting price of US$79 each, the same family pays US$316 (£237.13 / €281.43), more than ten times the government fee for a form that asks mainly for passport details and a few yes-or-no questions.
The sums change for a photographer in Malta applying for an Indian business eVisa, with an invitation letter, a business card and strict photo specifications. A second pair of eyes may be worth paying for there, though India runs its own official eVisa portal and it is worth comparing first.
How to Spot an Unofficial Site
GOV.UK warns that other websites may charge more to apply and tells people to avoid sites that imitate government services. Check the web address against the table above, look for a disclaimer in the footer, and read the refund terms before paying. eVisas, for one, keeps government fees once submitted and generally keeps its service fee too, whether you are approved or refused.
Luggage and Carry-On Sizes: Will It Fit?
Cabin rules are set by the airline, not the bag maker, and they differ more than most people expect.
- British Airways allows one cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm including wheels and handles, plus a smaller handbag, and you must be able to lift it into the locker yourself.
- easyJet includes a free under-seat bag up to 45 x 36 x 20cm. A large cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm and 15kg costs extra unless your fare includes it.
Every 55cm Samsonite cabin case fits those large cabin limits, including the Proxis at its expanded 23cm depth. None fits easyJet’s free under-seat allowance. Peak Design sells its Travel Backpack as a carry-on; the 30L suits weekends and tighter allowances, while the 45L is harder to squeeze into a strict low-cost limit once expanded.
| Bag | Price | Empty weight | Capacity | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsonite C-Lite 55cm | £365 (US$486.40 / €433.15) | 1.9kg | 36L | 10 years |
| Samsonite Proxis 55cm | £359 (US$478.40 / €426.03) | 2.2kg | 40/46L | 10 years |
| Samsonite Essens 55cm | £189 (US$251.86 / €224.29) | 2.8kg | 39L | 5 years |
| Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L | £219.99 (US$249.95 / €249.99) | Not stated | 30L | Lifetime |
| Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L | £259.99 (US$299.95 / €299.99) | Not stated | 45L, expandable | Lifetime |
Worked Example: A Carry-On-Only Week in Copenhagen
A couple fly Gatwick to Copenhagen with easyJet for seven nights in October, each with a paid large cabin bag. One packs a C-Lite at 1.9kg empty, leaving more than 13kg of the 15kg limit for knitwear, a waterproof and walking boots for the harbour from Nyhavn to Refshaleøen. The other takes a Proxis and expands it on the way home to fit a ceramic bowl from a Nørrebro design shop. Neither pays for a hold bag, and both walk straight out of Kastrup to the Metro.
Where the Real Discounts Are
Samsonite’s 10% newsletter discount takes the Essens 55cm from £189 to £170.10, a saving of £18.90 (US$25.19 / €22.43). Proxis, Nexis and aluminium cases are excluded from most discounts, so C-Lite is the premium range to check. Peak Design’s Tech Bundle, the 45L backpack with small Tech and Wash Pouches, costs £319.47 (US$425.73 / €379.12) instead of £354.97, saving £35.50. Its Overstock Sale offers up to 50% off open-box and refurbished gear, and PD Certified Gear keeps the lifetime guarantee at 10% off.
Warranties: Who Pays When a Bag Breaks
Neither warranty covers everything. Samsonite’s excludes damage from airline handling, wear and tear and cosmetic marks, so if a baggage handler cracks your shell, report it to the airline before you leave the airport. Peak Design’s lifetime warranty excludes loss, theft, accidents and cosmetic wear. For those, you need travel insurance with decent baggage cover.
Packing: One Bag, Done Properly
The case for one bag is speed: no carousel, no lost luggage, straight to the train. A few habits from our reviews make it work:
- Pack heavy kit low and against the back panel of a backpack, with cubes and pouches above.
- Use cubes for separation, not compression. Peak Design’s Camera Cube turns part of the Travel Backpack into a padded camera compartment.
- Keep the laptop reachable. Side access lets you slide it out at security without unpacking.
- Leave room to expand on the way home, which is what the expandable Proxis and Travel Backpack 45L are for.
- Declare bulky kit to your transfer company in advance: a surfboard or bike may need a bigger car.
Picture a photographer flying London to Rome for a weekend shoot. She takes the Travel Backpack 30L as her only bag, with a Camera Cube holding a mirrorless body and two lenses below and two days of clothes above. A Capture clip on the shoulder strap carries the camera between Trastevere and the Aventine, so she shoots without unzipping anything.
Before You Fly: A Simple Order of Play
- Insure the trip when you book it. Some cancellation cover only applies if you buy within days of your first booking; our travel insurance guide compares the policies.
- Apply for any authorisation on the official site, well before you fly.
- Check your airline’s cabin limits against your bag, expanded.
- Book the transfer with your flight number, and declare child seats and bulky luggage.
- Install a travel eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, so you are reachable on landing.
- Set up a VPN if you will rely on hotel and airport Wi-Fi.

How We Test Travel Essentials
We checked official prices on each brand’s own store or route pages, read warranty, returns, cancellation and refund terms in full, compared official government fees with what paid services charge, and weighed everything against Trustpilot and app store ratings. Scores reflect value (30%), terms and small print (25%), quality and design (20%), support (10%) and user ratings (15%). Prices move, so we recheck them whenever this page is updated.
Travel Essentials Questions, Answered
Do I need an ETA to visit the UK?
If you are a visitor who does not need a visa, including Europeans and Americans, yes. It costs £20 (US$26.65 / €23.73) on GOV.UK, and other sites may charge more.
How much does an ESTA cost?
US$40.62 (£30.48 / €36.18) on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, since 16 October 2026. An approved ESTA lasts up to two years or until your passport expires.
When does ETIAS start?
The EU says the last quarter of 2026. The fee will be €20, with under-18s and over-70s exempt. Until it launches, any site taking ETIAS payments is not the official system.
Is eVisas.com a government website?
No. It is a private service run by TravelRox, Inc., and it says it is not affiliated with any government and that applying direct may cost less.
Is it worth paying a visa agency?
For short forms such as the Canada eTA, rarely: CAD 7 direct against US$79 through eVisas. For complex eVisas with invitation letters and strict photo rules, a second check can earn its fee.
What size is a cabin bag?
It depends on the airline. British Airways allows 56 x 45 x 25cm including wheels and handles; easyJet’s free under-seat bag is 45 x 36 x 20cm.
Will a 55cm suitcase fit easyJet’s free cabin bag allowance?
No. A 55cm case needs easyJet’s large cabin bag allowance, up to 56 x 45 x 25cm and 15kg, which costs extra on most fares.
Is the Peak Design Travel Backpack carry-on size?
Peak Design sells it as a carry-on. The 30L suits tight allowances; check the 45L against your airline’s limits, especially when expanded.
Does Samsonite’s warranty cover airline damage?
No. Damage from carrier handling is excluded, so report it to the airline before leaving the airport.
How long will an airport transfer driver wait?
With Kiwitaxi, 90 minutes after the scheduled pickup at airports and ports, and 15 minutes at hotels. For delays over 30 minutes, contact the driver or support.
Is a pre-booked transfer cheaper than a taxi?
Not always. Its value lies in a fixed price for the whole car, which suits families and groups. In Malta, the Airport Direct bus is far cheaper for a couple.
Is there a Samsonite or Peak Design discount code?
Neither needs a Promo Code. Samsonite gives 10% off your next order for signing up to its newsletter; Peak Design takes 10% off bundles and up to 50% off overstock.
