There is a particular kind of tiredness that sets in at 11pm in an arrivals hall, with two children, three suitcases and a taxi queue that stretches past the vending machines. Kiwitaxi sells a way out of it: a private car, booked before you fly, at a price fixed before you leave home, with a driver holding a sign with your name on it. We looked at how it works, what it costs on two real routes and where it falls short, as part of our guide to travel essentials.

Verdict
Kiwitaxi is a sensible middle option between the bus and a premium chauffeur: a private car, a known price and a generous 90-minute wait at airports. It is rarely the cheapest private transfer on a given route, and its prices move about more than the word “fixed” suggests before you book. Once booked, though, the price holds, and for families, groups and anyone landing late it takes most of the guesswork out of the last leg.
Pros
- Per-vehicle pricing that gets good value with four to seven passengers
- 90 minutes of free waiting at airports, longer than Welcome Pickups’ 60
- Free cancellation up to 16 hours before pickup on standard cars
- Wide choice of vehicles, from small hatchbacks to 19-seat minibuses
- Child seats and bulky kit such as surfboards and bikes can be arranged in advance
Cons
- Often dearer than rival transfer sites on the same route
- Quoted prices vary between pages on the site until you reach the booking screen
- Flight delays over 30 minutes are your job to report
- Some reviewers report late cancellations by local operators in busy periods
- The mobile apps are new and have few ratings
What Kiwitaxi is, and who owns it
Kiwitaxi is a booking platform, not a taxi firm. It takes your booking and passes the job to a local transport company or driver in its network, who turns up in the class of car you paid for. The company says it has completed more than 1.4 million rides across 100+ countries.
The contracting company named in Kiwitaxi’s terms is IT Travel LP, a Scottish limited partnership registered under number SL24264, with an address at Mitchell House, Edinburgh. The site footer also lists an office in Vilnius, Lithuania. The same company publishes the iOS and Android apps.
That structure matters when something goes wrong. Your contract is with Kiwitaxi, which handles refunds and complaints, but the person who meets you is usually a local operator. Kiwitaxi’s own partner page says that drivers who cancel or fail to deliver risk losing their partnership, which is the main lever it has over quality.
Kiwitaxi prices: how the fares work
Every fare is for the whole vehicle, not per head, and covers the route you booked. Kiwitaxi shows prices in US dollars by default and lets you switch to euros, sterling and other currencies. The site says prices do not usually change by weekday or time of day, but can rise around major holidays and events.
Here are the classes, with sample fares from two routes we checked on Kiwitaxi’s official route pages.
| Car class | Passengers / bags | Example cars | Malta Airport to St Julian’s | Lisbon Airport to Cascais |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Comfort | 4 / 3 | Toyota Camry, VW Passat | US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73) | US$69 (£51.78 / €61.45) |
| Minivan 4PAX | 4 / 4 | Honda Odyssey, VW Touran | US$40 (£30.02 / €35.62) | US$71 (£53.28 / €63.23) |
| Minibus 7PAX | 7 / 7 | Hyundai H1, Kia Carnival | US$51 (£38.27 / €45.42) | US$76 (£57.03 / €67.69) |
| Business | 3 / 3 | Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series | not listed | US$80 (£60.03 / €71.25) |
| Premium Minibus | 6 / 4 | Mercedes V-Class | not listed | US$107 (£80.29 / €95.29) |
Kiwitaxi also lists Micro, Economy, Premium, SUV, Luxury SUV and minibuses for 10, 13, 16 and 19 passengers, though not every class runs on every route. Standard luggage is defined as up to 160cm (63 inches) when you add length, width and height together. Surfboards, skis, golf bags, bikes, pushchairs, musical instruments and pet carriers count as non-standard and must be agreed in advance, which can mean a bigger car and a higher fare.
One quirk worth knowing: the same route can show different “from” prices in different parts of the site. On the Lisbon Airport pages we saw US$59, US$63 and US$69 for Cascais. The figure on the booking screen, once you have chosen a date and car, is the one that counts.
Free plan, trial and the real saving
There is no subscription, free plan or trial. You pay per journey, and there is no Promo Code to enter. The saving Kiwitaxi offers is structural: one price for the whole car, set in advance, so traffic, a wrong turning or a late-night tariff will not change it.
That works best with a full car. A family of four landing at Malta International Airport and heading for a hotel in St Julian’s would pay US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73) for a Comfort car, or US$9.75 (£7.32 / €8.68) each. The Airport Direct bus, routes TD2 and TD3, costs €3 (US$3.37 / £2.53) a head, so €12 (US$13.47 / £10.11) for four, and it is undeniably cheaper, but it also means hauling the bags on and off and walking from the stop.
The sums tilt further in a group. Seven friends flying into Lisbon for a long weekend in Cascais could take Kiwitaxi’s 7-seat minibus for US$76 (£57.03 / €67.69), or about US$10.86 (£8.15 / €9.67) each, for a ride of roughly 30 minutes. Kiwitaxi’s own route page puts public transport at around 90 minutes for under €5 (US$5.61 / £4.21) per person, via the Aerobus or metro and the train from Cais do Sodré. For a couple travelling light, the train is excellent value. For seven people with surfboards, the minibus is the obvious call.
Key features
Meet and greet. At airports the driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name sign. Your voucher includes the driver’s or dispatcher’s contact details.
Free waiting. Kiwitaxi’s terms give 90 minutes of free waiting at airports and ports after the scheduled start, and 15 minutes at hotels and other pickup points. After that the driver may charge for extra time or leave.
Flight delays. Kiwitaxi says drivers may adjust the pickup for delays of under 30 minutes. For anything longer, you should contact the driver or customer support yourself. The terms are blunt that Kiwitaxi is not responsible for flight delays, so the 90 minutes is your buffer, not an open-ended promise.
Child seats and extras. You can add child seats, extra stops, pet-friendly rides and ski boxes when you book. The terms put the onus on you to choose the right seat for your child, and a missing or wrong seat can lead the driver to refuse the trip.
Hourly hire and intercity trips. Besides airport runs, Kiwitaxi sells city-to-city transfers and cars with a driver by the hour.
Coverage and availability
Kiwitaxi says it covers 100+ countries and more than 2,000 cities and airports. Malta is well served, with routes from the airport to St Julian’s, Sliema, Valletta, Bugibba and Mellieha, as is Portugal, where the Lisbon Airport page lists Cascais, Estoril, Sintra, Carcavelos, Ericeira and Fátima. You can book on kiwitaxi.com or in the Kiwitaxi app for iOS and Android.
How to book Kiwitaxi, step by step
- Enter your pickup and drop-off, for example Malta International Airport to your hotel in St Julian’s, plus the date and time.
- Compare the car classes and choose one with enough room for passengers and luggage.
- Add your flight number, child seats and any non-standard luggage such as a surfboard or bike.
- Decide whether you want the “+Free Cancellation at Any Time” add-on.
- Pay by Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay and save the voucher, which carries the meeting point and contact numbers.
- On landing, switch your phone on, head to the meeting point and look for your name.
Keep your phone reachable. Kiwitaxi’s terms say that if you do not appear by the end of the free waiting period and cannot be reached, the driver may leave and the full fare is kept. A travel eSIM that works the moment you land solves most of that problem.
Cancellation, changes and refunds
Kiwitaxi’s help centre splits its cars into two groups. Micro, Economy, Comfort, Minivan 4PAX, Minibus 7PAX and the standard SUV can be cancelled for a full refund up to 16 hours before pickup. Business, Premium, Premium Minibus, the 10 to 19-seat minibuses and the Luxury SUV need 24 hours. Cancel later than that and you lose the payment.
If your plans are shaky, the “+Free Cancellation at Any Time” add-on lets you cancel up to a minute before pickup; the fee for the add-on itself is not refunded. Refunds go back to your original payment method, and Kiwitaxi says to allow 5 to 7 bank days. Changes to time or address can usually be made in your account at least 24 hours ahead; after that you need to contact support.
If the driver does not turn up, contact the driver and support straight away, and file a claim within 14 calendar days with proof that you were there, such as time-stamped photos and a record of your calls. Kiwitaxi also warns that taking a local taxi without contacting it first may affect a refund.
Privacy and security
You hand over a name, phone number, flight details and payment, which is standard for a transfer booking. Card payments are taken at booking. The Android app’s data-safety listing says data is encrypted in transit, that users can ask for it to be deleted, and that some personal information and app activity may be shared with third parties, which in practice will include the local operator who drives you.
App ratings
The apps are recent. On the US App Store, Kiwitaxi scores 5.0 from just 6 ratings, too few to mean much. On Google Play it has more than 10,000 downloads. Most customers still book on the website.
Customer service
Kiwitaxi offers 24/7 support by email at support@kiwitaxi.com and through online chat on the site and in the app, plus a help centre at support.kiwitaxi.com. There is no customer phone line on the main site.
What users say about Kiwitaxi
On Trustpilot, Kiwitaxi scores 4.5 out of 5 from 977 reviews and replies to every negative review, usually within 48 hours. The most common praise is for drivers who were waiting on arrival, clean and fairly new cars on longer runs, and the reassurance of having the driver’s number before landing. Return trips that ran to plan get a lot of mentions.
The complaints are fewer but pointed. Several reviewers describe bookings cancelled by email shortly before travel, in one case two days before a group pickup, which they put down to a shortage of drivers. Others had prepaid, confirmed bookings that could not be guaranteed on the day. That is the weak spot of any marketplace model: the quality of the ride depends on the local partner, and in peak weeks the partner can let you down.
Kiwitaxi vs Welcome Pickups vs Suntransfers vs Uber
| Kiwitaxi | Welcome Pickups | Suntransfers | Uber | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Booking model | Pre-booked, fixed price per car | Pre-booked, fixed price per car | Pre-booked private and shared transfers | On demand, or Uber Reserve in advance |
| Malta Airport to St Julian’s | From US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73) | Quote on booking | Private from €24.94 (US$28.00 / £21.01); shared shuttle from €4.23 (US$4.75 / £3.56) | Depends on local availability |
| Free airport waiting | 90 minutes | 60 minutes, then €6 (US$6.74 / £5.06) per 15 minutes in a sedan | Driver waits at meeting point; flights tracked | 60 minutes on Reserve airport pickups in markets where offered |
| Free cancellation | 16 hours (standard), 24 hours (premium) | Set out at booking | Up to 48 hours before pickup | Set out in the app |
| Meet and greet | Yes, name sign | Yes | Yes | No; you meet at the pickup zone |
Suntransfers undercuts Kiwitaxi in Malta and adds a shared shuttle for solo travellers, but asks for 48 hours’ notice to cancel against Kiwitaxi’s 16. Welcome Pickups is the closest like-for-like rival, though its free waiting stops at 60 minutes. Uber is fine for a couple with hand luggage at a big airport, but you are exposed to surge pricing and there is no one in arrivals with your name. Kiwitaxi wins on flexibility and waiting time; it loses on price.

Kiwitaxi FAQs
Is there a Kiwitaxi promo code?
No Promo Code is needed. Kiwitaxi shows a fixed per-vehicle price on the booking screen, and that is what you pay. Codes shared on coupon sites are not something we can vouch for.

Yes. It is a booking platform operated by IT Travel LP, registered in Scotland, with more than 1.4 million completed rides by its own count and a 4.5 rating from 977 reviews on Trustpilot.
How long will a Kiwitaxi driver wait at the airport?
90 minutes after the scheduled pickup time at airports and ports, and 15 minutes at hotels and other addresses. Extra waiting may cost more.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Kiwitaxi says drivers may adjust for delays under 30 minutes. For longer delays, contact the driver or customer support as soon as you can.
What is Kiwitaxi’s cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 16 hours before pickup on standard cars and 24 hours on premium classes and large minibuses. An optional add-on lets you cancel up to a minute before, but its fee is not refunded.
How much is Kiwitaxi from Malta Airport to St Julian’s?
From US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73) for a Comfort car seating four, or US$51 (£38.27 / €45.42) for a 7-seat minibus. The journey is about 12km and takes around 20 minutes.

Can I take a surfboard or bike in a Kiwitaxi?
Yes, if you declare it when booking. Surfboards, bikes, skis and golf bags are non-standard luggage and may need a larger car at a higher price.
Does Kiwitaxi provide child seats?
Yes, you can add them at booking. You are responsible for choosing the right seat for your child’s age and weight.
Is Kiwitaxi cheaper than a taxi?
Not always. In Malta, the Airport Direct bus and some rival transfer sites are cheaper. Kiwitaxi’s value lies in a fixed price for the whole car, which works out well for families and groups.
