SafetyWing made its name by selling travel medical insurance the way Netflix sells television: a rolling subscription you can start after you have already left home and cancel when you settle down. For a freelance designer in Lisbon who decides on a whim to spend a month in Bali, that flexibility is the whole point. This review sets out what the two Nomad Insurance plans actually cover, who stands behind the claims, and where the small print bites. For the wider market, start with our travel insurance guide.

What SafetyWing is and who owns it
SafetyWing is the trading brand of Safety Nest, Inc., a company based in San Francisco. It sells two travel products under the Nomad Insurance banner, plus a separate international health plan for remote teams. The insurance itself is arranged through a structure that is worth understanding before you buy.
On Nomad Insurance Essential, the insurer of record is SafetyWing Insurance I.I., an international insurer domiciled in Puerto Rico. The plan is administered by SafetyWing (Managing General Agent), Ltd, registered in the Turks and Caicos Islands. On Nomad Insurance Complete, the travel benefits sit with SafetyWing Insurance II, also domiciled in Puerto Rico and sold through the same managing general agent to members of the SafetyWing Special Purpose Trust. The health benefits on Complete are underwritten by VUMI Group I.I., another Puerto Rico insurer, and administered by VIP Administration Services LLC.
None of these entities is a UK insurer, which matters if you are used to the Financial Conduct Authority and the Financial Ombudsman Service standing behind a policy. SafetyWing is a well-known brand among nomads, but you are buying offshore cover, and a dispute would not run through the British system.
SafetyWing prices: Essential and Complete explained
SafetyWing prices by age band and shows the figure for 18 to 39 year olds by default. Older travellers pay more, and the exact figure appears once you choose your age in the calculator.
| Plan | Price (ages 18 to 39) | Billing | Medical limit | Deductible |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nomad Insurance Essential | US$62.72 (£47.07 / €55.86) | Every 4 weeks, or 364 days up front at 10% off | US$250,000 (£187,600 / €222,650) | None |
| Nomad Insurance Complete | US$177.50 (£133.20 / €158.08) | Monthly with a 12-month commitment, or annually at 10% off | US$1.5m (£1.13m / €1.34m) a year | Not listed on the plan page |
Essential is travel medical insurance. It pays for unexpected illness and accidents abroad, emergency evacuation up to US$100,000 (£75,040 / €89,060) over your lifetime, a ticket home of up to US$5,000 (£3,752 / €4,453) if a close family member dies, travel delay payments of US$60 for three to eight hours and US$150 beyond that, and lost checked luggage up to US$500 (£375.20 / €445.30) per item and US$3,000 (£2,251.20 / €2,671.80) per period. It runs like a subscription, renewing every 28 days until you stop it. You can read more and buy it through our Nomad Insurance Essential link.
Complete is closer to international health insurance with travel extras bolted on. Alongside emergency care it covers doctor and specialist visits up to a US$5,000 outpatient limit, up to 10 psychology or psychiatry visits a year, cancer treatment, US$350 of screenings and vaccines, maternity up to US$2,500 after a 10-month wait, and emergency dental up to US$1,000. Travel extras include trip cancellation up to US$300 per trip, stolen belongings up to US$5,000 and theft of electronics up to US$1,000 per item. Kids’ plans cost up to 35% less, according to SafetyWing.
Add-ons change the price. On Complete, the electronics theft add-on was listed at US$216 (£162.09 / €192.37) and the Hong Kong, Singapore and US add-on at US$810 (£607.82 / €721.39). Essential has its own electronics, adventure sports and US add-ons, priced in the calculator.
Free trial and real savings
There is no free trial and no Promo Code. The genuine savings are structural:
- Pay for 364 days up front and SafetyWing takes 10% off.
- Cancel Essential at any time and the unused days are refunded, so you are not paying for cover you no longer need.
- Children on Complete cost up to 35% less than adults.
Worked example: a 34-year-old UK remote worker, four weeks in Thailand
Take a 34-year-old copywriter from Manchester spending four weeks working from a co-living space in Chiang Mai. On Essential, she pays US$62.72 (£47.07 / €55.86) for the 28 days, with no deductible. If she slips on a wet temple step and needs an X-ray and a cast, the bill is reimbursed from the first dollar.
Now suppose she likes Chiang Mai so much she stays for a year. Paying every four weeks for 13 periods would cost US$815.36 (£611.85 / €726.16). Paying the 364 days in one go brings that to US$733.82 (£550.66 / €653.54), a saving of US$81.54 (£61.19 / €72.62). The annual payment also unlocks longer home-country visits, as explained below.
Family example
A couple in their thirties travelling with a toddler from Gatwick to Bangkok for four weeks would pay US$125.44 (£94.13 / €111.72) for the two adults on Essential, with the child priced in its own age band at checkout. Group policies can be bought in one transaction, and members can be added or removed later.
Who can buy SafetyWing, and does it work for UK residents?
Essential is open to anyone aged 14 days to 69 years who intends to travel outside their home country, regardless of citizenship, with one exception: Cuban citizens cannot buy it. UK residents can therefore buy it, as can people who have already left home. A return ticket is not required.
There are two catches. You cannot buy cover for trips to Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Puerto Rico, Russia, Belarus, Syria, or the occupied Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. And if you buy after an incident has started, expect scrutiny: claims for anything in the first 72 hours after purchase need extra proof that it happened after you bought the policy.
Complete has stricter eligibility. Enrolment is open up to age 64, eligibility is checked against your country of residence (by default, wherever you spend more than 183 days a year), applications can take up to 10 days, and cover starts on the 1st or 15th of the month.
Coverage: countries, home country visits and the US
Essential works in more than 180 countries, Complete in 175. The United States is excluded by default on both and needs an add-on; US citizens cannot use the US add-on on Essential at all.
Home-country cover is where SafetyWing differs from a standard UK single-trip policy. On Essential, emergency medical cover during short visits home only kicks in once the plan has been active for 90 days. On the 364-day upfront plan you get up to 90 days per visit within any 180 days, capped at 179 days per year. On four-weekly billing it is 30 days per visit in a rolling 90-day period. If you are a Brit flying back to Leeds for Christmas, you are covered for emergencies, not for treatment of something that started abroad.
Gadgets, adventure sports and COVID-19
Electronics. Essential’s base plan does not cover theft of laptops or phones; only a wallet theft benefit of US$150 per incident and a robbery benefit that excludes electronics. The electronics theft add-on pays up to US$1,000 per item, US$3,000 per period and US$6,000 over your lifetime, with depreciation of 2% a month from purchase, so a 50-month-old laptop is worth nothing. Accidental damage is never covered. You need a police report within 24 hours and proof of ownership. Complete includes theft of electronics up to US$1,000 per item, and its add-on raises that to US$2,000 per item and US$5,000 a year.
Adventure sports. Essential includes leisure sports injuries up to US$250,000, with skiing and snowboarding covered on piste with a helmet. The adventure sports add-on, with a US$100,000 limit, extends cover to scuba diving within your certified depth, kitesurfing, paragliding, skydiving, motorcycles over 50cc and mountaineering below 6,000 metres. Off-piste skiing, BASE jumping, heli-skiing, whitewater rafting and any racing stay excluded. The add-on must be bought with a new plan and does not apply in your home country.
COVID-19. Essential’s wording has a dedicated COVID-19 section. The general epidemic exclusion applies only where a health warning was in place before your start date, or where you stayed in a warned area for more than 10 days after a warning was issued.
Claims, exclusions and pre-existing conditions
Claims are filed through the SafetyWing dashboard or app with “Make a claim”, attaching receipts, medical notes and, for theft, a police report. SafetyWing says Complete claims are typically reimbursed within 21 days, and the insurer may email for more information. In-patient care can be pre-arranged through the 24/7 assistance line.
The exclusions list is long. Pre-existing conditions are excluded on both plans; on Complete, a condition counts as pre-existing if you were ever diagnosed or treated for it, or had symptoms in the two years before cover started. Essential has a narrow section for emergency treatment of a pre-existing condition, but routine management of diabetes or asthma is not covered. Essential also excludes mental health disorders, routine check-ups, pregnancy and childbirth (bar complications), injuries while intoxicated, motor accidents without the required licence or helmet, and anything linked to war or riots.
Customer service
Support runs 24/7 through live chat, which SafetyWing says answers in under a minute, with a contact form at safetywing.com/contact. There is no published UK phone line for general enquiries.
App ratings
The SafetyWing iPhone app scores 1.7 out of 5 from 21 ratings on the US App Store, a small sample. It handles buying, cancelling, claims and a virtual payment card. There is no SafetyWing app listing we could verify on Google Play; Android users manage their plan through the website.
What users say
On Trustpilot SafetyWing scores 4.3 out of 5 from 4,162 reviews, with 74% five-star and 16% one-star. Happy customers talk about how quickly they could buy cover and how friendly the chat staff are, and a few describe hospitals being paid promptly. The unhappy ones describe claims refused on pre-existing grounds where they say no previous diagnosis existed, repeated requests for documents, inconsistent decisions across linked claims, and chat sessions that dropped. Some older travellers note that cover stops at a certain age. SafetyWing replies to 95% of negative reviews.

Genki is the pick if you want a European insurer and a higher medical limit for a similar monthly outlay, but it is health cover only. Heymondo suits shorter trips with luggage, cancellation and a doctor chat app. If you are weighing a UK-regulated alternative, read our True Traveller review and World Nomads review.
SafetyWing FAQs
Is there a SafetyWing promo code?
No Promo Code is needed or published by SafetyWing. The real saving is 10% off for paying 364 days up front.
How much is SafetyWing per month?
Essential costs US$62.72 (£47.07 / €55.86) per 4 weeks for ages 18 to 39. Complete costs US$177.50 (£133.20 / €158.08) a month for the same age band.
Can UK residents buy SafetyWing?
Yes. Essential is open to anyone aged 14 days to 69 who is travelling outside their home country, except Cuban citizens.
Who underwrites SafetyWing?
Essential is underwritten by SafetyWing Insurance I.I., a Puerto Rico domiciled insurer. On Complete, travel benefits sit with SafetyWing Insurance II and health benefits with VUMI Group I.I., both in Puerto Rico.
Does SafetyWing have a deductible?
Essential has no deductible. SafetyWing’s Complete plan page does not list one.
Does SafetyWing cover pre-existing conditions?
No. Both plans exclude them, and Complete treats any condition ever diagnosed or treated, or with symptoms in the past two years, as pre-existing.
Am I covered by SafetyWing in my home country?
For emergencies only, once the plan has been active for 90 days: up to 30 days per visit on four-weekly billing, or up to 90 days per visit on the 364-day plan.
Does SafetyWing cover laptops and phones?
Only with the electronics theft add-on on Essential, up to US$1,000 per item after depreciation. Damage is never covered.
How long do SafetyWing claims take?
SafetyWing says Complete claims are typically reimbursed within 21 days. Reviewers report a mix of quick payouts and long document chases.
Is SafetyWing worth it?
For long, open-ended trips on a budget, yes. For a fortnight in Spain with a pricey camera, a UK policy with higher limits and gadget cover will usually suit you better.
Verdict
SafetyWing Essential is still one of the simplest ways to insure an open-ended trip: no deductible, rolling billing, and you can buy it from a hostel in Hanoi. The trade-offs are a modest US$250,000 medical cap, offshore insurers and claims handling that divides opinion. Complete is a different animal, closer to expat health cover, and only makes sense if you need outpatient and mental health care on the road. Pair either with a good travel eSIM and you have the basics of nomad life sorted.
