The best-known travel eSIM covers more than 200 destinations, installs in a couple of minutes and, with the right promo code, costs less than most rivals. It is not perfect, and for heavy users there are better buys.

Our verdict
Airalo is the sensible first download for most trips. Prices are fair, the catalogue is enormous and the app is the simplest we have used. With NEWTOAIRALO15 the first eSIM is noticeably cheaper than Holafly or Saily for the same trip. People who live on video calls, want to share a hotspot all day or need a local phone number should look at the alternatives further down.
Pros
- 15% off the first eSIM with a published promo code, and 10% off for returning customers
- Huge choice of local, regional and global plans in one app
- Unlimited plans for the UK, USA and Japan undercut Holafly’s
- Validity usually starts when you land, not when you install
- Airmoney cashback on every purchase
Cons
- No free plan or free trial
- Most plans are data-only, so no local number for calls or banking texts
- “Unlimited” means 3GB a day at full speed, then around 1Mbps
- Some users report eSIMs that fail to connect on arrival
- The promo code cannot be stacked with referral credit
Airalo promo codes and discount codes: what works and how to use it
Search for an Airalo discount and you will meet a wall of coupon sites promising anything from 5% to 35% off. Most of those codes are short partner deals, and plenty have expired by the time you reach checkout. Two codes work for the rest of 2026.
NEWTOAIRALO15 is for first-time customers and takes 15% off any eSIM, including unlimited plans and the global Discover range, up to a maximum saving of US$100. AIRALOESIM10 is for people who already have an Airalo account and knocks 10% off any eSIM priced at US$10 or more. Both run until 31 December 2026, can be used once per customer, and end early if Airalo hits its redemption cap.
The arithmetic is simple. A week of unlimited data in the UK costs US$27.00 (£20.26 / €24.04). With NEWTOAIRALO15 it drops to US$22.95 (£17.22 / €20.44). A month of unlimited data in Japan, US$69.00 (£51.78 / €61.45) at full price, comes down to US$58.65 (£44.01 / €52.23).
To apply a code, pick your eSIM, go to checkout and tap “Use Airmoney or code”. Paste the Promo Code, check the new total and pay by card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
The Airalo referral code: give $3, get $3
Airalo’s own referral programme gives a new customer US$3 (£2.25 / €2.67) off their first purchase and pays the friend who shared the code the same amount in Airmoney, the app’s credit. There is no limit on how many friends you can refer. The catch is that the referral discount cannot be combined with a promo code, so on any eSIM over US$20 the 15% code is the better deal. Below that, the flat US$3 wins.
Does Airalo have a free plan or free trial?
No. Airalo does not offer a free eSIM, a free trial or a free data allowance, and the app is free to download but nothing in it is free to use. The nearest thing is Airmoney: every purchase earns cashback of 5% for new travellers, rising to 6%, 7% and 10% as your total spend passes US$20, US$70 and US$200. On a long trip that credit can pay for the next country.
If a free trial matters to you, Nomad offers new users a small free data allowance, and Saily occasionally runs credit promotions. Both are covered in our eSIM ranking.
Airalo prices for the UK, Europe, USA and Japan
Airalo now sells unlimited data in several big markets, priced by the length of your trip. Europe is still sold in fixed bundles.
“Unlimited” comes with a fair-use rule. You get 3GB a day at full speed; after that the connection slows to around 1Mbps until the allowance resets 24 hours later. That is plenty for maps, messaging and browsing, and enough for an evening of Netflix on a phone, but not for a day of tethered laptop work.
| Destination | Plan | US$ | £ | € |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Unlimited, 7 days | 27.00 | 20.26 | 24.04 |
| United Kingdom | Unlimited, 30 days | 69.00 | 51.78 | 61.45 |
| Europe (41 countries) | 3GB, 7 days | 11.00 | 8.25 | 9.80 |
| Europe (41 countries) | 10GB, 30 days | 31.00 | 23.26 | 27.61 |
| Europe (41 countries) | 20GB, 30 days | 48.00 | 36.02 | 42.75 |
| USA | Unlimited, 7 days | 25.00 | 18.76 | 22.26 |
| USA | Unlimited, 30 days | 68.00 | 51.03 | 60.56 |
| Japan | Unlimited, 7 days | 26.50 | 19.89 | 23.60 |
Airalo charges in US dollars. Pound and euro figures use mid-market rates on 19 October 2026, so your card statement may differ slightly.
For a sense of scale, a 10GB Europe bundle is enough for a fortnight of maps, WhatsApp and Instagram for one person, but not for a couple who stream football on the train from Lisbon to Porto. If you watch video on mobile data, pay for the next size up or switch to an unlimited destination plan.
Airalo countries and coverage
Airalo says it covers more than 200 countries and regions. In practice that means three kinds of plan. Local eSIMs cover one country and are usually the cheapest. Regional eSIMs cover a block of countries: Europe (41 countries and networks), Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Oceania and North America. The global Discover eSIM works across more than 100 countries and suits round-the-world trips or anyone who flies too often to buy a plan each time.
Popular local plans include the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Australia, the UAE and Morocco. Networks vary by country; in the USA, for example, Airalo uses T-Mobile.
Coverage outside cities depends on the local partner network rather than Airalo itself, so check which network your plan uses before heading somewhere remote.
Is Airalo legit? What users say
Yes. Airalo is a US-registered company with operations in Singapore, founded in 2019, and says it has more than 20 million users. On Trustpilot it holds a TrustScore of 4.0 from 40,584 reviews. The Locals Insider review also reports 4.6 on the App Store and 4.5 on Google Play.
The praise is consistent: it is far cheaper than roaming and quick to install. “Very affordable compared to home service provider roaming charges,” one Trustpilot reviewer wrote. Linda May, from Italy, told Locals Insider: “I have used an Airalo e-SIM card on my last few trips to Europe. It is amazing.”
The complaints cluster around two things. Some eSIMs fail to connect on arrival (“My esim was not working and not helpful support,” one reviewer wrote), and some users find fixed bundles disappear faster than expected because background apps and photo backups run on mobile data. Turning off automatic uploads before you fly avoids most of the second problem.
How to sign up and use Airalo
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home network. In settings, look for “Add eSIM”.
- Download the Airalo app or go to airalo.com and create an account.
- Choose a country, regional or global eSIM and the package you need.
- At checkout, tap “Use Airmoney or code”, enter NEWTOAIRALO15 and pay.
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. The app does it in a few taps, or you can scan a QR code.
- On arrival, switch mobile data to the Airalo line and turn on data roaming for it. Leave your home SIM on for calls and texts if you want them.
In most cases the validity period starts when the eSIM connects to a network in its destination, not when you install it. A few packages start counting at installation, so read the plan details before you buy. Hotspot sharing works if your phone and the local network support it; on Android, set the APN shown on the installation page first.
Most local Airalo eSIMs are data-only, so you will not get a local phone number. WhatsApp, FaceTime and Signal calls work as normal over data, and your home number stays on your main SIM.
Airalo vs Holafly vs Saily
All three sell “unlimited” data in the UK, but the word means different things. Airalo gives 3GB a day at full speed, then around 1Mbps. Holafly includes 1GB a day of hotspot sharing and may slow speeds for a day under fair use. Saily’s unlimited plans give 5GB a day at full speed, then slow to 1Mbps.
| UK, unlimited | Airalo | Airalo with NEWTOAIRALO15 | Holafly | Saily |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 days | US$27.00 (£20.26 / €24.04) | US$22.95 (£17.22 / €20.44) | US$27.50 (£20.64 / €24.49) | US$28.99 (£21.75 / €25.82) |
| 30 days | US$69.00 (£51.78 / €61.45) | US$58.65 (£44.01 / €52.23) | US$76.50 (£57.41 / €68.13) | US$71.99 (£54.02 / €64.11) |
| Phone number | No | No | No | No |
| Promo Code | NEWTOAIRALO15 | LOCALS (5% off) | SAILY5 (5% off) |
For a city break or a fortnight’s holiday, Airalo with the promo code is the cheapest of the three. Holafly makes more sense if you want one simple plan and need to tether a laptop every day. Saily suits travellers who care about security on public Wi-Fi, because it includes ad blocking and web protection from the people behind NordVPN.
Airalo FAQs
What is the Airalo promo code for first-time users?
NEWTOAIRALO15 gives new customers 15% off their first eSIM, up to US$100 off, until 31 December 2026. Enter it at checkout under “Use Airmoney or code”.
Is there an Airalo discount code for existing customers?
Yes. AIRALOESIM10 takes 10% off any eSIM costing US$10 or more for people who already have an account. It can be used once.
Can I use an Airalo promo code and referral credit together?
No. Airalo does not allow promo codes to be combined with other promotions or Airmoney. Use whichever saves more: the code on bigger orders, the US$3 referral on small ones.
Does Airalo give you a phone number?
Most Airalo eSIMs are data-only. Global plans include a small number of minutes and texts, but not a local number you can give out. Keep your home SIM active for banking texts.
Can I use Airalo as a hotspot?
Yes, as long as your phone and the destination network support tethering. On unlimited plans, hotspot use counts towards the 3GB daily full-speed allowance. On Android you may need to enter the APN from the installation instructions first.
When does an Airalo eSIM start?
Usually when it connects to a supported network in the destination. Some packages start on installation, so check the details before installing weeks in advance.
Why is my Airalo eSIM not working?
The most common causes are data roaming switched off for the eSIM line, a missing APN or a phone locked to its home network. Restart the phone, check those settings and contact Airalo’s 24/7 chat if it still fails.
Is Airalo cheaper than roaming?
For most UK travellers outside Europe, by a wide margin. A week of unlimited data in the USA costs US$25.00 (£18.76 / €22.26) before any discount, less than many networks charge for a few days of roaming.
