Free bets and sign-up offers: how the deals work

Most UK welcome deals are “bet and get”: deposit, place one qualifying bet, and collect free bets whether it wins or loses. Four details matter.

Qualifying odds. bet365 asks for just 1/5, so a short-priced favourite will do. Coral and Spreadex ask for 1/2. Betfred, Betway and Unibet want Evens, closer to a coin flip, and Lottoland insists on a multiple at 4.00.

Tokens or balances. Most free bets are fixed tokens that cannot be split, such as Coral’s six £5 bets. bet365 pays a Bet Credits balance you can divide as you like.

Expiry. Seven days is standard; Spreadex gives 28. Sign up midweek and you may get only one weekend of football.

Stake not returned. The rule that catches most newcomers. A £10 cash bet at 2/1 returns £30; a £10 free bet at the same price returns £20, because the bookmaker keeps the free stake. On a 1/4 shot it returns just £2.50, so free bets work harder at modest odds, though nothing changes the chance of a result.

Two more traps: cashing out the qualifying bet voids the offer at bet365, Betfred, Unibet, Spreadex and Lottoland, and e-wallets are often excluded, with PayPal barred at Betfred and Coral and Revolut at Betway.

Two of the ten work differently. 10bet matches your first deposit up to £50, to be wagered ten times within 30 days; Gambling Commission rules cap wagering on any bonus at 10x, so this sits at the limit. QuinnBet refunds half a losing first day as a free bet up to £25, which suits a planned card of racing.

How to read betting odds: fractions, decimals and probability

A fraction shows profit against stake. At 5/2 you win £5 for every £2 staked, so £10 returns £35 including the stake. A decimal price shows the total return per £1, so 5/2 is 3.50. To convert, divide the fraction and add one: 1/5 becomes 1.20, Evens 2.00, 6/4 2.50.

Divide 1 by a decimal price for the implied chance: 2.00 is 50%, 3.50 about 29%, 1.20 about 83%. Add the chances for every outcome in a market and the total tops 100%. The excess is the bookmaker’s margin, which is why comparing prices matters over a season.

How a £10 Saturday acca works, step by step

An accumulator joins several selections into one bet. The odds multiply and every leg has to win, which is why small stakes return big sums and why most accas lose.

Say you back four Premier League home wins: one at 1/2 (1.50), one at 4/6 (1.67), one at Evens (2.00) and one at 6/4 (2.50).

  1. Multiply the decimal prices: 1.50 x 1.67 x 2.00 x 2.50 comes to roughly 12.50.
  2. Multiply by the stake: £10 x 12.50 is a £125 return, or £115 profit.
  3. If any one of the four fails to win, the whole bet loses. Three out of four pays nothing.
  4. The implied chance is 1 divided by 12.50, or 8%, and the bookmaker’s margin on each leg is built in.

The same four-fold suits Betfred’s two acca free bets (four or more selections, win only) and Betway’s acca tokens (four legs at 4.0 overall, each at 1.30 or bigger). With a £10 free bet it returns £115, as the free stake is kept, and every leg clears the 1.50 minimum for 10bet‘s acca boost.

Spread betting explained, and why Spreadex carries a warning

Spreadex offers a conventional sportsbook and sports spread betting under one login, and the two behave very differently.

In spread betting you buy or sell a figure, such as total goals in a match, against a quoted range, and win or lose your stake for every unit the result lands away from your price. Buy a Total Goals spread of 2.6 to 2.8 at £5 per goal and a 3-1 finish makes £6 (1.2 x £5). A 0-0 draw costs £14 (2.8 x £5), nearly three times the stake.

Losses are not capped at what you put down, and Spreadex says this applies to its free spread bets too. Spread betting is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and needs a full spread account. The three £10 fixed odds free bets work like any other, so you can use those and let the spread bets expire.

Betting exchanges and 0% commission: when Smarkets makes sense

A betting exchange cuts out the bookmaker. You back a selection to win or lay it to lose, another customer takes the other side, and the exchange charges commission on your net winnings in each market.

At Smarkets the standard rate is 2%. Enter Promo Code COMMFREE at registration, deposit £10 or more by debit card or instant banking, and you pay nothing on bets that settle within 60 days of that deposit. Win £1,000 net across the period and you save £20.

Losing bets never pay commission, so traders and regular layers gain most; a weekend fiver punter gains almost nothing. Ante-post bets settling after day 60 pay the standard rate, and first deposits by PayPal, Revolut, Skrill, Neteller or virtual cards do not qualify.

Acca boosts, bet builders and cash out: the extras worth knowing

Acca boosts. 10bet adds up to 100% to winning accumulators of two or more selections at 1.50 or bigger, capped at £1,000. bet365 offers Acca Boost too, though not on bets placed with Bet Credits.

Bet builders. Coral runs football Bet Builders across more than 100 leagues and a racing version, and its welcome package includes one free bet for each. Unibet adds a daily Bet Builder Uniboost on builders priced at 5.0 or bigger.

Cash out. Coral offers full and partial cash out, even on shop slips; Betway’s can vanish while a market is suspended. Never use it on a qualifying bet.

Early payout. 10bet settles pre-match full-time result bets as winners if your team goes two goals up in football, 20 points up in the NBA or 17 points up in the NFL.

Each-way bets on the horses: what a place pays out

An each-way bet is two equal bets, one on your horse to win and one to place, so “£5 each-way” costs £10. The place half pays a fraction of the odds.

Under standard British terms, five to seven runners pay a quarter of the odds for the first two; eight or more in a non-handicap pay a fifth for three places; handicaps of 12 to 15 runners pay a quarter for three places, and 16 or more pay a quarter for four. Coral and 10bet pay extra places on selected races.

Take £5 each-way at 12/1 in a 16-runner handicap. If the horse wins, the win half returns £65 and the place half, at a quarter of 12/1, returns £20: £85 in total from £10. If it finishes second, third or fourth, you lose the win half and get £20 back, a £10 profit.

Short prices make poor each-way bets: on a 2/1 shot with quarter-odds terms, a place returns £7.50 from £10. For welcome offers, Coral and Spreadex count only the win half of a qualifying bet, and Betway asks for 2/1 or bigger each-way.

Best Odds Guaranteed and Rule 4 deductions at the races

Best Odds Guaranteed pays the bigger of the price you took and the starting price. Back a horse at 5/1 with £10, see it drift to 7/1 at the off, and a win returns £80 instead of £60. If it shortens, you keep 5/1. At Coral it covers UK and Irish horse and greyhound racing for bets placed after 8am on race day; Unibet covers UK and Irish horse racing. Ante-post, free bets and boosted prices are usually excluded.

Rule 4 works the other way. When a horse is withdrawn late, bookmakers deduct a set amount from winnings on fixed-price bets, scaled to the withdrawn horse’s odds: one at Evens to 6/5 means 50p in the pound, one at 10/1 to 14/1 just 5p, and anything bigger than 14/1 nothing. Back a 4/1 winner with £10 after an evens favourite comes out, and your £40 profit becomes £20, plus your £10 stake back. Starting price bets are generally exempt, and the cap is 90p in the pound.

Fastest-paying bookies: deposits and withdrawals

A debit card is the safest choice for any welcome offer, since e-wallets are the methods most often excluded. Withdrawal speed is where bookmakers differ most.

  • Betfred: cards usually within four hours, Instant Bank Payment within six, BACS within three days. No fees.
  • Coral: Visa Fast Funds within four hours, PayPal within eight, debit cards in one to three banking days. No fees.
  • bet365: PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer in one to four hours, Apple Pay listed as instant, debit cards in one to five banking days.
  • Smarkets: Instant Bank Transfer in around 12 hours, Trustly and e-wallets in one to two business days, cards in one to six. No fees.

Verification delays are the commonest complaint on bookmakers’ Trustpilot pages, so upload your ID and proof of address early.

Tax, credit cards and ID checks: the rules UK punters should know

Tax on winnings. There is none for punters. Bookmakers pay betting duty on their profits instead, so the £115 profit on the Saturday acca above is yours in full.

Credit cards. Gambling on a credit card is banned in Great Britain, online and in shops, and operators may take PayPal, Skrill or Neteller only if they can stop a credit card being used behind them.

ID checks. Every online operator must confirm your age and identity before you can place a bet. Most check credit reference and electoral roll data automatically, then ask for a passport, driving licence or household bill if that fails. A bookmaker generally cannot demand ID as a condition of withdrawing if it could have asked earlier, though anti-money laundering rules can justify later requests for bank statements or proof of income.

Financial checks. Once net deposits pass a set level over 30 days, operators also run a light-touch check against public records such as county court judgments and bankruptcy orders, usually without asking you for paperwork.

Best betting apps for punters on the move

The big names lead the app stores. bet365 holds 4.7 on the UK App Store from 454k ratings and 4.6 on Google Play. Betway matches it, and Betfred scores 4.6 and 4.5.

Spreadex is rated 4.7 on iOS, with fixed odds and spreads in one app, and Unibet scores 4.3, built around live streaming. 10bet rates 3.3 from 173 ratings but runs an app offer: bet £10 in the app, get a £10 free bet.

App ratings and Trustpilot often disagree, as bet365 shows, so read both.

Racing and newer bookmakers

Is a betting site legit? Checking the UKGC register

Online betting in Great Britain is legal with a bookmaker licensed by the Gambling Commission. Each card above shows the licence holder and account number; search either on the Commission’s public register to see the licensed activities, the domains each company runs and any regulatory action.

That last part is worth reading. Betway was fined £11.6 million over failings linked to VIP customers, Betfred’s licensee £2.87 million and later £240,000, EU Lotto (Lottoland) £760,000, and Smarkets £630,000. bet365’s licensee paid £239,085 in lieu of a financial penalty, and the Commission noted the remedial action it had taken.

Brand names and licence holders often differ: Coral is run by LC International Limited, part of Entain, and 247bet trades as a white label on White Hat Gaming’s account.

Safer gambling: limits, time-outs and GAMSTOP

Every UK-licensed bookmaker must offer these tools. Set them before your first bet.

  • Deposit limits: daily, weekly or monthly caps. At Coral, reductions apply straight away while increases have a cooling-off period.
  • Time-outs: short breaks, such as Coral’s 24 hours, seven days or 30 days, or up to 42 days at Smarkets.
  • Product blocks: Unibet lets you block casino while keeping sports open.
  • Self-exclusion: close your account with one operator, or register with GAMSTOP to block every UK-licensed gambling site at once, for six months to five years.

If betting stops being fun, free and confidential help is available from GambleAware.org and the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, open 24 hours a day.

How we test and rate online bookies

Each bookmaker is scored out of five against six weighted criteria:

  • Welcome offer (25%): the value of the deal and how clearly its terms are set out, including qualifying odds, expiry and payment exclusions
  • Markets and features (20%): depth on football and racing, plus bet builders, acca boosts, cash out and Best Odds Guaranteed
  • Payments and withdrawals (15%): method choice, fees and payout speed
  • Licensing and trust (15%): the UKGC register entry, regulatory history and safer gambling tools
  • App and support (15%): app store ratings and the hours and channels of customer service
  • User feedback (10%): Trustpilot scores and the themes in real reviews

We read each offer’s terms in full, check every licence on the Commission’s register and compare payment pages and help centres. Offers we cannot confirm as live stay out of the ranking.

Betting sites FAQs: what punters ask

What is the best betting site in the UK?

bet365, for most punters, thanks to its market depth, in-play football and a 1/5 qualifying price. Betfred offers more in free bets, and Smarkets suits exchange users.

How do free bets work?

Place a qualifying bet at the required odds and the bookmaker credits free bets, usually once it settles. Winnings are paid as cash, but the free bet stake is not returned.

Can I withdraw a free bet?

No. Free bets must be staked. Only the winnings, minus the stake, become withdrawable.

Do I need a Promo Code for UK betting offers?

Only at some sites. bet365 uses Promo Code 365GMBLR and Smarkets uses COMMFREE. The other eight bookmakers in our top ten need no Promo Code.

Which betting sites offer Best Odds Guaranteed?

Coral and Unibet both offer Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish racing. Coral’s covers greyhounds too, for bets placed after 8am on race day.

Which is the best betting site for horse racing?

Betfred, for racing depth and Totepool. Coral adds Best Odds Guaranteed and extra places on selected races, and Unibet streams more than 100,000 horse and dog races a year.

Which bookies pay out the fastest?

Betfred card withdrawals and Coral’s Visa Fast Funds usually arrive within four hours, and bet365 processes e-wallet withdrawals in one to four hours.

Which betting sites take PayPal?

bet365, Coral and Smarkets accept it, but PayPal deposits do not qualify for the welcome offer at Coral or Smarkets, and bet365 needs extra identity checks first.

What is the difference between a bookmaker and a betting exchange?

A bookmaker sets the odds and takes your bet. On an exchange such as Smarkets, you bet against other customers and pay commission on net winnings instead.

How does an each-way bet work?

It is two equal bets, one to win and one to place, so £5 each-way costs £10. The place half pays a quarter or a fifth of the odds, depending on the race.

Can you lose more than your stake when spread betting?

Yes. Losses grow with every unit the result moves against you, and Spreadex says this applies to its free spread bets too.

Do you pay tax on betting winnings in the UK?

No. Punters pay no tax on betting winnings; bookmakers pay duty on their profits instead.

Can I use a credit card on UK betting sites?

No. Credit card gambling is banned in Great Britain, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card. Use a debit card or bank transfer.

Do I need ID to open a betting account?

Yes. Every licensed operator must verify your age and identity before you bet, usually through an automatic database check, with documents requested if that fails.

Why has my bookmaker restricted my account?

Bookmakers may limit stakes or close accounts for commercial reasons, which the Gambling Commission accepts. Its research found about 4% of active accounts restricted, mostly through stake limits, and those customers were more likely to be in profit.
