Heymondo is a Barcelona insurance broker that has built a following among backpackers and travel bloggers on two promises: very high medical limits and an app with a 24-hour doctor chat. It suits a defined trip, such as a family of four flying Gatwick to Malaga for a fortnight or a couple doing three weeks in Vietnam, better than open-ended nomad life. This review explains what our Promo Code does, who actually insures you, and where the limits sit. For the wider market, see our travel insurance guide.

What Heymondo is and who owns it
Heymondo is the trading name of Smart Insurance Correduría de Seguros, S.L., a broker registered in Barcelona and supervised by Spain’s insurance regulator, the Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones, under code J3422. It says more than three million travellers have bought through it.
Being a broker, Heymondo does not carry the risk itself. Its English-language site names AXA and Iris as partner insurers, and its Spanish disclosure lists the insurers it places business with: Inter Partner Assistance (part of AXA), Iris Global, ARAG, IMA Ibérica, Europ Assistance and Caja de Seguros Reunidos. The insurer of record for your policy is the one printed on your policy documents, so check it before you travel.
For British buyers, the important point is that Heymondo is regulated in Spain, not by the FCA. Contracts are governed by Spanish law, though disputes go to the courts of your own country of residence.
Heymondo plans and prices
Heymondo sells three products: single-trip International Travel Insurance in three tiers, an Annual Multi-Trip policy, and Long Stay cover for trips of 90 days or more.
| Plan | Price from (Thailand) | Medical | Baggage | Cancellation and interruption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heymondo Medical | US$2.49 (£1.87 / €2.22) a day | Emergency medical, repatriation and the 24-hour app | Check the quote | Check the quote |
| Heymondo Top | US$2.72 (£2.04 / €2.42) a day | US$5m (£3.75m / €4.45m) | US$1,700 (£1,275.68 / €1,514.02) | US$3,500 (£2,626.40 / €3,117.10) |
| Heymondo Premium | US$3.02 (£2.27 / €2.69) a day | US$10m (£7.5m / €8.91m) | US$2,500 (£1,876 / €2,226.50) | US$7,000 (£5,252.80 / €6,234.20) |
The headline single-trip benefits also include travel disruption up to US$1,500 (£1,125.60 / €1,335.90), personal liability up to US$60,000 (£45,024 / €53,436), search and rescue up to US$10,000 and rental car excess up to US$500. Prices depend on destination, length of trip, age and add-ons.
Annual Multi-Trip covers unlimited trips of up to 60 consecutive days, with medical cover up to US$10m, personal liability up to US$2m and a US$250 (£187.60 / €222.65) medical excess. The age limit is 49.
Long Stay is for trips of 90 days or more. The first 90 days cost US$162 (£121.56 / €144.28) worldwide excluding the USA, or US$296 (£222.12 / €263.62) including it, with renewals from US$54 (£40.52 / €48.09) for 30 days. Limits are lower: US$2.5m medical, US$1,200 for luggage and US$60,000 liability, with a US$250 medical excess. The age limit is 49.
The LOCALS Promo Code and other ways to save
Our link carries the Promo Code LOCALS, which applies a partner discount at checkout. Heymondo does not publish a fixed percentage for partner codes on its English site, so check the discounted total in your basket before you pay. There is no free trial.
Other savings are built into the product. On single-trip policies you can add an optional excess to lower the price, and Heymondo runs time-limited seasonal sales. Heymondo also advertises lower prices for families and groups.
Worked example: a 34-year-old UK remote worker, four weeks in Thailand
Our 34-year-old copywriter from Manchester is off to Chiang Mai for 28 days. At Heymondo’s starting rates for Thailand, that comes to:
- Medical: from US$69.72 (£52.32 / €62.09)
- Top: from US$76.16 (£57.15 / €67.83)
- Premium: from US$84.56 (£63.45 / €75.31)
The LOCALS partner discount comes off the quoted figure at checkout. Twenty-eight days also keeps her inside the 29-day window, so the age limit is 69 rather than 49. If she stretched the trip to three months, Long Stay at US$162 (£121.56 / €144.28) would be cheaper than a single-trip policy, but it carries a US$250 medical excess and no home-country cover.
Family example
A family of four spending two weeks in Phuket on Premium would start at US$169.12 (£126.91 / €150.62) for 56 traveller-days at the advertised rate, before family pricing and the partner discount are applied. Each traveller is quoted individually, so the final number depends on ages.
Who can buy Heymondo, and does it work for UK residents?
Heymondo says its insurance is available to anyone and covers you while you are outside your home country. Reviews on Trustpilot include UK customers who bought cover through it. You must be over 18 to take out the contract. The age limits are the real filter: 69 for single trips of up to 29 days, and 49 for trips of 30 days or more, Annual and Long Stay. Several reviewers over 70 complain they could not get cover at all.
Coverage: countries, home country and the US
Heymondo covers trips worldwide, with the United States priced separately on Long Stay. There is no cover in your home country; the policy is built for time spent abroad. Zones of armed conflict are excluded.
Gadgets, adventure sports and COVID-19
Electronics. Gadget cover is an optional extra, worth up to 50% of your baggage limit, rising to 100% on Top and Premium. On Premium that means up to US$2,500 across bags and electronics combined, which will not cover a top-spec laptop and camera together.
Adventure sports. The base policy covers everyday activities such as hiking and trekking below 3,000 metres, swimming and golf. The adventure sports add-on extends cover to white-water rafting, scuba diving below 20 metres, bungee jumping and trekking up to 5,000 metres.
COVID-19. All Heymondo plans cover medical treatment if you catch COVID-19 while away, a PCR test if a doctor prescribes it, extra accommodation if quarantine stops you flying home, and cancellation if you test positive before departure or a close relative becomes seriously ill or dies from it.
Claims, exclusions and pre-existing conditions
In an emergency, call the 24/7 assistance number on your policy, or use free internet calls from the app, and the assistance team will direct you to a clinic. For everything else you open a claim in the app and attach receipts and reports. Heymondo does not publish average claim times.
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered, nor are routine check-ups. Trip cancellation cover only applies if you buy it within seven days of your first trip booking, a rule that catches out people who book flights in January and insurance in June. You have 14 calendar days to cancel a new policy for a refund, as long as no claim has been made.
Customer service and the app
The Heymondo app is the brand’s strongest feature: a 24/7 medical chat and video consultation, free assistance calls over the internet, offline policy documents and claims. It rates 4.0 out of 5 from 57 ratings on the US App Store and 3.6 from 639 reviews on Google Play, with more than 100,000 downloads.
Customer service runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Spanish time, by WhatsApp text on +34 627 283 366, email or web chat. Emergency assistance is around the clock.
What users say
Heymondo scores 4.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 3,930 reviews, with 75% five-star and 12% one-star ratings. Buyers praise a quick, clear purchase, fair prices and fast, friendly replies by chat and email; one British reviewer said it was hard to find affordable UK travel cover elsewhere. Complaints focus on slow replies to emails and app messages, difficulty getting through by phone, a long wait for treatment approval through the assistance provider, gaps in cruise cover and the lack of cover for over-70s. Heymondo replies to 97% of negative reviews.

Verdict
Heymondo is a strong choice for defined trips: high medical limits, cancellation cover, sensible COVID-19 terms and an app with a doctor on call, plus our LOCALS partner discount. Its weak spots are the age limits, the lack of home-country cover and weekday-only customer service. For open-ended nomad life, SafetyWing or Genki fit better; for a fortnight in Thailand or a family holiday, Heymondo is hard to beat on value. Pick up a travel eSIM before you go and you are sorted.
