World Nomads made its name selling cover to the kind of traveller who books a one-way flight and works out the rest later. The pitch has barely changed: buy online, extend online, claim online, from wherever you happen to be standing. The question for anyone comparing travel insurance is whether the policy behind that pitch is as flexible as the marketing suggests. For UK residents, it largely is, with a few limits worth knowing before you pay.

- Medical cover: £5 million (Standard) or £10 million (Explorer)
- Standard excess: £100 per person, per insured event

Verdict
World Nomads remains one of the easiest policies to buy for a long, loosely planned trip, and the Explorer plan’s £10 million medical limit is generous for the price bracket. The trade-offs are an unforgiving pre-existing conditions rule, a low cut-off age for UK buyers and modest gadget limits. If you are under 65, healthy and heading somewhere active, it deserves a place on your shortlist.
Pros
- Buy or extend online after you have left home
- High medical limits on both plans
- Activity levels let you pay only for the sports you will actually do
- Optional specified items cover for a camera or laptop
- 14-day cooling-off period
Cons
- Pre-existing medical conditions are excluded rather than screened
- UK policies stop at age 64
- Phones and laptops share a low valuables limit unless you pay for specified items
- Standard has no cover for money, missed connections or travel delay
- Ownership is changing hands, and some reviewers worry about the effect on service
Who owns World Nomads, and who pays your claim?
World Nomads is a brand, not an insurer, and it pays to know the difference. On the UK site, cover is sold by International Medical Group Limited trading as World Nomads, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (firm reference 311496) and registered in England and Wales (company 4163178).
The UK site names the underwriter as Collinson Insurance, a trading name of Astrenska Insurance Limited, which is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and PRA (FRN 202846). Collinson announced in June 2024 that it would underwrite World Nomads’ new annual multi-trip product in the UK and Ireland. Some UK policy wordings published by World Nomads name Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s instead, so look for the insurer’s name on your own certificate of insurance; that is the company that stands behind your claim.
The corporate picture is also shifting. In February 2026, nib Group, the Australian health insurer that had owned World Nomads, agreed to sell the international travel insurance business to International Medical Group, Inc., a subsidiary of SiriusPoint, for A$67.5 million. World Nomads says policies, benefits and service carry on unchanged and that customers do not need to do anything.
World Nomads prices: what drives your quote
World Nomads does not publish example prices on its UK site; you get a figure only once you enter your details. That is normal for travel insurance, and the price depends on a handful of factors:
- Age. Older travellers pay more, and UK cover cannot be bought or extended after 64.
- Destination. A trip that includes the US or Canada costs considerably more than one confined to Europe, because private medical bills there are so high.
- Trip length. Longer trips cost more, up to the 12-month maximum.
- Plan. Explorer costs more than Standard and brings higher limits plus extra sections.
- Activities. Each step up from Level 1 to Level 4 adds to the premium.
- Specified items. Listing a camera or laptop for extra cover adds a little more.
Worked example of the saving. WNFOUND takes 5% off the premium, before taxes. On a policy where the premium comes to £200, that is £10 off (about US$13.33 / €11.87). On a £400 premium, the saving is £20 (about US$26.65 / €23.73). It will not change your life, but it covers a decent dinner in Hanoi.
Standard vs Explorer: the cover in detail
The figures below come from World Nomads’ UK policy wording and apply per person. Conversions are approximate.
| Benefit | Standard | Explorer |
|---|---|---|
| Overseas medical | £5,000,000 (US$6.66m / €5.93m) | £10,000,000 (US$13.33m / €11.87m) |
| Cancellation | £3,000 (US$3,998 / €3,560) | £5,000 (US$6,663 / €5,934) |
| Cutting your trip short | £3,000 | £5,000 |
| Trip resumption | Not covered | £1,500 |
| Belongings, total | £1,000 (US$1,333 / €1,187) | £2,000 (US$2,665 / €2,373) |
| Single item limit | £125 | £250 |
| Valuables, including portable electronics | £250 (US$333 / €297) | £500 (US$666 / €593) |
| Money | Not covered | £500 |
| Hijack | Not covered | £2,000 |
| Specified items upgrade (total / per item) | £1,250 / £400 | £2,000 / £750 |
Excess. Most sections carry a £100 excess (about US$133 / €119) per person, per insured event. There is a higher £500 excess for an emergency air ambulance or helicopter evacuation in Nepal. Several sections, such as hospital benefit, travel delay, baggage delay and personal accident, have no excess at all.
Gear and gadgets. There is no separate gadget section. Phones, tablets and laptops fall under the valuables limit of £250 or £500, which will not go far with a recent iPhone. If you travel with an expensive camera, the specified items upgrade is the sensible fix, raising the per-item limit to £400 on Standard or £750 on Explorer.
Adventure sports: how the activity levels work
This is where World Nomads earns its reputation. Level 1 activities and non-manual work are included automatically on both plans. Levels 2, 3 and 4 are optional upgrades, each adding further sports and manual work, with Level 4 covering everything below it. Anything not on the list needs World Nomads’ confirmation before you buy.
There are conditions inside each activity. Scuba diving is covered for conventional diving only, within the limits of your qualification, so a PADI Open Water diver should not expect cover at 40 metres. Skiing and snowboarding are covered as conventional skiing only. Read the activity list against your plans before you choose a level; it is the single most common reason adventure claims fall apart.
Consider a freelance designer from Manchester spending three months between Bali and Vietnam, with a dive course on Gili Air and a motorbike loop in the north. She needs a level that covers the diving at her certified depth, and she needs to read the motorbike conditions carefully, because licence and helmet rules apply in most policies.
Who can buy it: eligibility and the age limit
The UK policy is for British citizens or UK residents with a permanent UK address and access to long-term UK medical care, who agree to be repatriated to the UK in a medical emergency. You must be 64 or younger when you buy or extend.
You can buy before you leave or once you are already away. If you buy while overseas, there is a 72-hour waiting period before cover starts, and cancellation cover is not available. Extending an existing policy before it ends has no waiting period. The maximum length of any policy, extensions included, is 12 months.
Pre-existing medical conditions
World Nomads does not screen and cover pre-existing conditions; it excludes them. A condition counts if, when you buy, you are aware of it or it is being investigated, or if you have received advice, treatment or medication for it in the 180 days before purchase. The rule extends to anyone your trip depends on, including close relatives, which matters for cancellation claims.
If you have asthma, diabetes or a heart condition that you would want covered, a specialist that screens conditions, such as True Traveller, is the better route.
How to sign up and use World Nomads
- Go to the World Nomads UK site and start a quote with your age, trip dates and destinations.
- Choose Standard or Explorer, then add any activity level and specified items you need.
- Apply the Promo Code WNFOUND if it is not already showing, and check the total.
- Pay and save the certificate of insurance and policy wording emailed to you.
- Store the emergency numbers in your phone: +353 21 237 8005 or +61 2 8263 0470 from abroad, or 0800 260 5081 from within the UK.
- Log in to your member account to extend the policy before it ends if your plans change.
The claims process
Claims are made online through your World Nomads member account. In a medical emergency, call the 24-hour assistance team before you are admitted to hospital wherever possible; they can guarantee payment and arrange transfers or repatriation. You can also email assist@worldnomads.com.
For everything else, the rules are the usual ones: keep original receipts and medical reports, report theft to the local police and get a written report, and get a written report from the airline for lost or damaged bags. If you need to cut a trip short, get authorisation from the assistance team first. Missing paperwork is the commonest reason claims stall.
Customer service and app
Help is through the online help centre, the member login and the 24-hour emergency assistance line. World Nomads does not promote a dedicated mobile app on its UK homepage; policies are managed through the website.
What users say
World Nomads scores 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 6,647 reviews, with 63% five-star and 18% one-star ratings. The company replies to almost every negative review, usually within a day.
The positive reviews tend to praise the quick quote and purchase, the clear choice between two plans and friendly support. The negative ones cluster around claims: a portal that some find awkward, long phone waits, and an excess that some reviewers say they had not noticed. A few long-standing customers also say they are uneasy about the change of ownership.

True Traveller is the closest UK rival and wins for anyone with a medical history or over 64, with a lower excess on its top plan. Travelex Insurance is not an option for UK residents at all.
