Peak Design started with a clip that holds a camera on a rucksack strap and grew into one of the most talked-about names in carry-on travel. Its bags are expensive and over-engineered in the best sense: every zip, buckle and pocket has been thought about. There is no coupon to hunt for, but there are real official savings, chiefly a 10% bundle discount and an overstock section with open-box and refurbished gear. This review is part of our travel essentials series.

Verdict
Peak Design makes the travel backpack that other brands measure themselves against. The Travel Backpack opens from the top, sides, front and back, which matters more than it sounds when you are pulling a charger out at a departure gate. The lifetime warranty is real and, by most accounts, well run. Against that, the prices are high, the accessories that make the system work cost extra, and the bag is heavier and more structured than a simple rucksack. If you travel with a camera, it is very hard to beat. If you just need to carry clothes, a cheaper pack will do.
Pros
- Lifetime warranty on bags, handled online through your account
- Access from four sides on the Travel Backpack, via weatherproof zips
- Bags, pouches and camera cubes designed to work together
- 10% off bundles and an official overstock section with refurbished gear
- Strong reputation on Trustpilot for fast warranty replacements
Cons
- Expensive, especially once you add camera cubes and pouches
- Battery products carry only a two-year warranty
- Cosmetic wear is not covered
- No newsletter discount, and the ID.me discount is limited to the US and Canada
- Some reviewers report slow replies from support
What Peak Design is and who owns it
Peak Design was founded in 2010 in San Francisco by Peter Dering. Its first product, the Capture camera clip, raised about US$365,000 on Kickstarter in 2011, and the company has gone back to the platform many times since, most successfully with its Travel Tripod in 2019, which raised about US$12.1 million. It has been carbon neutral since 2018, co-founded the Climate Neutral Certified label in 2020 and is a Certified B Corporation. In 2021 it publicly called out Amazon over an Amazon Basics bag that closely copied its Everyday Sling; Amazon later renamed the product.

Travel Backpack 45L. The headline bag. Peak Design sells it as a rugged, expandable carry-on, with top, side, front and rear access through weatherproof UltraZips and laptop access on the main back zip. The 45-litre version is built for a week or more out of one bag.
Travel Backpack 30L. The same design, smaller and £40 cheaper. For most weekend trips and for anyone flying airlines with tighter cabin rules, it is the more sensible size.
The Travel Line accessories. The backpack is designed around add-ons: the Tech Pouch (from £44.99 / US$49.95), the Wash Pouch (from £49.99 / US$49.95), packing cubes for clothes and shoes, and the Camera Cube V2 (£42.99 to £119.99 / US$49.95 to US$139.95 depending on size), which turns a section of the bag into a padded camera compartment.
Everyday and City. The Everyday bags, the Everyday Messenger and Everyday Backpack, made Peak Design’s name with photographers. The current bag listing leads with the City range alongside the Travel line, with the City Backpack 22L at £169.99 (US$199.95 / €199.99).
Capture camera clips. The Capture clip holds a camera rigidly on any belt, strap or bag. Peak Design lists it at US$79.95 (£59.99 / €71.20) in the US.
Mobile. Peak Design also sells phone cases with a built-in mounting system, MagSafe-compatible, and mounts that lock the phone in place, including a universal bar mount for bikes.
Free trial, free plan and returns
There is no trial or free tier: Peak Design sells physical products. The nearest thing to a low-risk way in is PD Certified Gear, lightly used items that keep the lifetime guarantee and cost 10% less than the recommended price. Returns and exchanges are set out in the brand’s support pages for each regional store.
Worked example: what the bundle discount saves
Peak Design’s Tech Bundle pairs the Travel Backpack 45L with a Tech Pouch and a Wash Pouch at 10% off. With the small Tech Pouch and small Wash Pouch, the parts come to £354.97 on the UK store: £259.99 for the backpack, £44.99 and £49.99 for the pouches. At 10% off you pay £319.47 (US$425.73 / €379.12), a saving of £35.50 (US$47.30 / €42.12).
On the US store the same three items list at US$399.85. Bundled, you pay about US$359.87 (£270.04 / €320.50), saving US$39.98 (£30.00 / €35.61).
The Photo Bundle works the same way, adding a large Camera Cube to the 45L backpack at 10% off. And if you are not set on new, the Overstock Sale section offers up to 50% off open-box, refurbished and overstock gear, though what is in stock changes and the big travel bags are not always there.
The Overstock Sale and other official discounts
- Bundles: 10% off set bundles or any bag with two accessories.
- Overstock Sale: up to 50% off open-box, refurbished and overstock gear.
- PD Certified Gear: lightly used, fully functional, lifetime guarantee, 10% off the recommended price.
- ID.me discount: for students, teachers, hospital workers, medical providers, military and first responders in the US and Canada, verified through ID.me. Peak Design does not publish the percentage, and it may not apply during site-wide sales, on bundles or on sale items.
- Newsletter: sign-up brings news of launches and sales, but no welcome discount.
A photographer’s weekend in Rome
A freelance photographer flies from London to Rome for a Friday-to-Sunday shoot of the city’s early-morning light. She takes the Travel Backpack 30L as her only bag, with a Smedium Camera Cube holding a mirrorless body and two lenses in the lower half and a packing cube with two days of clothes above it. A Capture clip on the shoulder strap carries the camera between Trastevere and the Aventine, so she can shoot without unzipping anything. On the return leg, the side access lets her slide the laptop out at security without unpacking the cube. Peak Design sells the bag as a carry-on, and British Airways allows a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm, wheels and handles included. For a longer trip she would size up to the 45L, but the expanded bag is harder to squeeze into a strict low-cost allowance. Our Samsonite review covers hard-shell alternatives for those trips.
Key features
- Four-way access on the Travel Backpack: top, sides, front and back.
- Weatherproof UltraZips on the main openings.
- Expandable 45L design for longer trips.
- Modular system: Camera Cubes, Tech Pouch, Wash Pouch and packing cubes all fit the Travel line.
- Capture clip to carry a camera on any strap.
Warranty: how Peak Design’s lifetime guarantee works
Peak Design will repair or replace a product that becomes non-functioning or defective, in the same or better condition, for the life of the product. Replacements can be new, open-box or refurbished, and they carry the same guarantee.
It does not cover:
- cosmetic wear such as scratches, stains and blemishes that do not affect function
- damage from misuse, neglect, accidents or deliberate damage
- lost or stolen items
- Factory 2nd products, which are final sale
- apparel beyond manufacturing defects
Products with rechargeable batteries have a two-year warranty from the date of purchase, and normal loss of battery capacity is not covered.
To claim, register the product in your Peak Design account, select the warranty option beside it, describe the fault and attach photos or video. Claims in Asia go through a regional partner and need a receipt from an authorised retailer, and items bought on second-hand marketplaces there are not covered.
Availability
Peak Design ships from regional stores in the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia and other markets, with prices in local currency, and its bags are also sold by camera shops and outdoor retailers.
How to buy and use it, step by step
- Open Peak Design’s official store for your region.
- Choose a Travel Backpack size: 30L for weekends, 45L for longer trips.
- Pick a bundle, or add two accessories to trigger the 10% saving.
- Check the Overstock Sale section for open-box or refurbished versions first.
- Pay, then register the bag in your Peak Design account so a warranty claim is quick later.
- Pack heavy kit low and against the back panel, with cubes and pouches above.
App and customer service
Peak Design does not have a shopping app, so there is no App Store or Google Play rating. Support is by email at info@peakdesign.com, with a separate address for Asia-region warranty claims, and warranty claims are filed from your online account.
What users say
On Trustpilot, peakdesign.com scores 4.4 out of 5 from around 1,250 reviews, with nearly nine in ten at five stars. Note that the profile is unclaimed and Peak Design does not invite reviews there. Owners praise how well the bags stand up to years of travel and daily use, and many describe warranty replacements arriving quickly with little fuss.
The criticism is about the edges. Some reviewers had claims turned down as wear and tear, others found support slow to reply, and a few report deliveries taking a couple of weeks or items going missing. Changes to the warranty policy for some Asian countries also drew complaints.
Peak Design vs Aer vs Nomatic vs Osprey
| Travel pack | Price | Capacity | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L | US$299.95 (£259.99 / €299.99) | 45L, expandable | Lifetime |
| Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L | US$249.95 (£219.99 / €249.99) | 30L | Lifetime |
| Aer Travel Pack 4 35L | US$259 (£194.35 / €230.67) | 35L | See Aer’s warranty |
| Aer Travel Pack 4 28L | US$239 (£179.35 / €212.85) | 28L | See Aer’s warranty |
| Nomatic Travel Duffel Bag 40L | US$329.99 (£247.62 / €293.89) | 40L | Lifetime |
Aer is the closest rival in spirit: a clean, city-friendly travel pack, cheaper than Peak Design at each size and lighter on modular extras. Nomatic’s 40L bag costs more than the Peak Design 45L in the US and also carries a lifetime warranty. Osprey’s Farpoint 40 comes from the hiking side, with a proper harness and hip belt, and suits travellers who expect to carry their bag for long stretches. Peak Design’s edge is the camera system: no rival integrates photography kit as neatly.
