Samsonite is the suitcase most of us have queued behind at a baggage carousel. It has been making luggage for well over a century, and its current hard-shell ranges are lighter and better guaranteed than the name’s slightly corporate image suggests. The catch is price: the flagship cabin cases cost more than many rivals, and the best of them are excluded from most discounts. This review sets out what each range costs, what the warranty covers, and where the real savings are. It sits within our travel essentials guides.

Verdict
Samsonite’s strength is its spread. You can spend £189 on a recycled-plastic cabin case with a five-year warranty or £630 on an aluminium one built to last a decade, and both are backed by a guarantee that any Samsonite service centre in the world will honour. The light ranges, C-Lite and Proxis, are genuinely light for hard shells. The weaknesses are the prices at the top, the discount exclusions on exactly the cases you would most want to buy, and a warranty that, like most in the trade, does not cover damage done by airline baggage handlers.
Pros
- Wide range from about £190 to over £600, all with cabin sizes at 55cm
- C-Lite weighs 1.9kg and Proxis 2.2kg empty, light for hard-shell cases
- Global warranty honoured at service centres worldwide
- Spare parts such as wheels and handles are easy to order, according to many reviewers
- Free UK delivery from £100 and free returns
Cons
- Proxis, Nexis and aluminium cases are excluded from most discounts
- Warranty excludes airline handling damage, wear and tear and cosmetic marks
- A quarter of Trustpilot reviews are one-star, mostly about rejected claims
- Flagship cabin cases cost more than Away or Antler equivalents
- No official student discount
What Samsonite is and who owns it
Samsonite began in Denver in 1910 as the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company, founded by Jesse Shwayder. The parent today is Samsonite International S.A., incorporated in Luxembourg and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the fitting stock code 1910. It also owns Tumi, American Tourister, Hartmann, Gregory, High Sierra and Lipault, which explains why the same group turns up at almost every price point in a department store luggage hall.
Samsonite prices: Proxis, C-Lite, Essens, Lite-Box and S’Cure
Samsonite’s own UK store lists cabin-size versions of each main range at 55cm. Prices below are the official UK list prices, with USD and EUR conversions at 1 GBP = 1.3326 USD = 1.1867 EUR.
| Range (55cm cabin spinner) | Price | Weight | Capacity | Shell | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essens | £189 (US$251.86 / €224.29) | 2.8kg | 39L | At least 70% recycled polypropylene | 5 years |
| Proxis (expandable) | £359 (US$478.40 / €426.03) | 2.2kg | 40/46L | Roxkin polypropylene | 10 years |
| C-Lite | £365 (US$486.40 / €433.15) | 1.9kg | 36L | Curv woven polypropylene | 10 years |
| Lite-Box Alu | £630 (US$839.54 / €747.62) | 5.1kg | 40L | Aluminium | 10 years |
Essens is the entry point and the one most people should consider first. It is heavier than the premium ranges at 2.8kg, but the 39-litre interior is generous and the shell is made with at least 70% post-consumer recycled polypropylene.
Proxis is Samsonite’s flagship light hard shell. The expandable cabin version measures 55 x 40 x 20cm, growing to 23cm deep, and weighs 2.2kg. Its Roxkin shell is a multi-layered polypropylene Samsonite developed itself. In the US, the Proxis Global Carry-On costs US$500 (£375.20 / €445.30) on Samsonite’s American store, measuring 22 x 14 x 9 inches. In Ireland the 86cm Proxis Spinner, the largest size, is €565 (£476.11 / US$634.46).
C-Lite uses Curv, a woven polypropylene that is stiff without being brittle, and at 1.9kg it is the lightest case in this line-up. The trade-off is space: 36 litres.
Lite-Box Alu is the aluminium option, with anodised corner reinforcements and a 5.1kg empty weight. It is a case for people who want the look of metal and are happy to give up two kilos of their cabin allowance for it.
S’Cure is the older polypropylene range that closes with clips rather than a zip. Retailer listings put the 55cm case at 34 litres and 2.9kg with a TSA lock. It is cheaper than the premium ranges but heavier, and it is the one to choose if you dislike zips on hard luggage.
Free trial, free plan and returns
There is no trial in the software sense, but the returns policy does the same job. In the UK you have 14 calendar days from delivery to withdraw from the sale, and returns are free. Personalised items cannot be returned. On Samsonite’s US store, unused items can go back within 60 days of the original ship date, though shipping charges are not refunded unless the item arrived damaged or wrong.
Worked example: what the 10% sign-up discount saves
Take the Essens 55cm spinner at £189 (US$251.86 / €224.29). Sign up to the newsletter and 10% comes off your next order, so you pay £170.10 (US$226.68 / €201.86), a saving of £18.90 (US$25.19 / €22.43). The order clears the £100 threshold, so delivery is free too.
Try the same with a Proxis or a Lite-Box Alu and the sums may not work. Samsonite says Proxis, Nexis and all aluminium cases are excluded from most discounts or discount codes, so expect to pay full price for those. If you want a premium case and a discount, C-Lite is the range to check, as its product page lists no such exclusion.
Carry-on sizes and airline limits
All the cabin cases above are 55cm tall, which is the common European cabin height. Two examples from airline rules:
- British Airways allows one cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm including wheels and handles, plus a smaller handbag, and you must be able to lift the cabin bag into the overhead locker yourself.
- easyJet includes a free under-seat bag up to 45 x 36 x 20cm. A large cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm and 15kg costs extra, unless your fare or easyJet Plus membership includes it.
Every Samsonite 55cm case in our table fits within those large cabin bag limits, including the Proxis at its expanded 23cm depth. None of them fits the free easyJet under-seat allowance. Airlines change their rules often, so check your booking before you pack.
A carry-on-only week in Copenhagen. A couple flying Gatwick to Copenhagen with easyJet for seven nights in October, each with a paid large cabin bag. One packs a C-Lite at 1.9kg empty, leaving more than 13kg of the 15kg limit for knitwear, a waterproof and a pair of boots for walking the harbour from Nyhavn to Refshaleøen. The other takes a Proxis, expanding it on the way home to fit a ceramic bowl from a Nørrebro design shop. Neither pays for a hold bag, and both walk straight out of Kastrup to the Metro without waiting at the carousel. If they need a transfer instead, our Kiwitaxi review covers pre-booked rides.
Warranty: what is covered, region by region
Samsonite’s warranty is global: you can take a case to any Samsonite service centre in the world, though you pay to get it there and should not post it to Samsonite directly. The length depends on the range and is printed on the warranty card and the product page: 10 years for Proxis, C-Lite and Lite-Box Alu, 5 years for Essens. The US store lists the same “Limited 10 Year Global Warranty” on Proxis.
It covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship, and Samsonite decides whether to repair or replace. It does not cover:
- damage from improper carrier handling, airlines included
- normal wear and tear
- cosmetic damage such as scratches, dents and stains
- misuse, accidents, abrasion and extreme temperatures
- electronic parts, cables and batteries
You need the completed warranty certificate or the original receipt. Product registration through my.samsonite.com is offered, and the newer ranges point to a Samsonite wecare programme for help during the warranty period. If a baggage handler cracks your shell, the claim goes to the airline, not Samsonite, and it pays to have travel insurance that covers baggage.
Key features
- Light hard shells: C-Lite (1.9kg) and Proxis (2.2kg) are among the lightest cabin cases in the range.
- Expandable versions: Proxis and Essens both come in expandable cabin formats.
- Recycled materials: the Essens shell is at least 70% recycled polypropylene.
- Free personalisation: offered on selected items on the UK store at certain times of year.
- Spare parts: wheels, handles and locks can be ordered, which keeps a ten-year case going.
Availability
Samsonite runs its own online stores in the UK, Ireland, the US and many other markets, and sells through department stores and luggage specialists. The warranty applies wherever you bought the case, provided you can show proof of purchase.
How to buy from Samsonite, step by step
- Go to Samsonite’s official store for your country and sign up to the newsletter for the 10% discount.
- Choose a range and filter by size; cabin cases are listed at 55cm.
- Check the product page for the warranty length and any discount exclusion.
- Add the case to your basket and apply the discount from your welcome email.
- Pay and choose delivery; UK delivery is free from £100.
- Keep the receipt and register the case for warranty purposes.
App and customer service
Samsonite does not run a mainstream shopping app in the UK or US, so there is no App Store or Google Play rating to report. Support in the UK runs by email at info.uk@samsonite.com, and repairs go through the network of authorised service centres listed on Samsonite’s site.
What users say
On Trustpilot, samsonite.co.uk scores 3.8 out of 5 from around 680 reviews, and the distribution is split: about seven in ten reviews are five-star and a quarter are one-star. The praise centres on spare parts. Many owners say replacement wheels, hinges and handles arrived quickly, sometimes free and sometimes after the warranty had ended, with clear fitting instructions. Others say their cases have lasted years of heavy use.
The complaints are about the edges of the warranty. Several reviewers had claims rejected as normal wear and tear and felt the decision was unfair. Some report early failures of zips, handles or wheels, and a few found agents hard to reach over refunds. Samsonite replies to many negative reviews, usually directing customers to its UK email address.
Samsonite vs Away vs Rimowa vs Antler
| Cabin case | Price | Weight | Capacity | Shell | Cover |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsonite Proxis 55cm | £359 (US$478.40 / €426.03) | 2.2kg | 40/46L | Polypropylene | 10-year limited global warranty |
| Samsonite Essens 55cm | £189 (US$251.86 / €224.29) | 2.8kg | 39L | Recycled polypropylene | 5-year limited global warranty |
| Away The Carry-On | £258 (US$343.81 / €306.17) | 3.4kg | 41L | Polycarbonate | LifetimeCare: free repairs for 5 years, repair support for life |
| Rimowa Essential Cabin | £700 (US$932.82 / €830.69) | 3.2kg | 36L | Polycarbonate | Lifetime guarantee |
| Antler Clifton cabin | £170 (US$226.54 / €201.74) | 2.8kg | 37L | Polycarbonate | Lifetime warranty |
Away’s Carry-On is the better buy if you want a 100-day window for free returns of unused items and a longer repair promise, though it is more than a kilo heavier than Proxis. Rimowa’s Essential Cabin costs nearly twice as much as Proxis for less space. Antler’s Clifton undercuts Essens on price and matches its weight. Samsonite wins on weight at the premium end and on the reach of its service network.
Samsonite FAQs

Samsonite offers 10% off your next order when you sign up to its newsletter. No Promo Code is needed beyond that welcome discount, and Proxis, Nexis and aluminium cases are excluded from most discounts.
Does Samsonite have a student discount?
We found no official student discount on Samsonite’s UK or US stores.
What does the Samsonite 10-year warranty cover?
Manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship, on ranges such as Proxis, C-Lite and Lite-Box Alu. It does not cover airline handling damage, wear and tear or cosmetic marks.
Does Samsonite’s warranty cover airline damage?
No. Damage from improper carrier handling, airlines included, is excluded. Report it to the airline before you leave the airport.
Is the Samsonite warranty valid abroad?
Yes. The warranty is global and any Samsonite service centre can handle it, though you pay to get the case there.
What size is a Samsonite carry-on?
The cabin cases on Samsonite’s UK store are 55 x 40 x 20cm, or 55 x 40 x 23cm for the Lite-Box Alu and the Proxis when expanded.
Proxis or C-Lite: which is better?
C-Lite is lighter at 1.9kg; Proxis holds more at 40 to 46 litres and costs slightly less at £359. Proxis is excluded from most discounts, which can tip the balance.
Is Samsonite Essens worth it?
At £189 it is the cheapest route to a Samsonite cabin case, with a recycled shell and a five-year warranty. It is heavier than the premium ranges at 2.8kg.
Will a Samsonite cabin case fit easyJet’s free bag allowance?
No. The free under-seat bag is limited to 45 x 36 x 20cm. A 55cm Samsonite needs easyJet’s large cabin bag allowance.
How long do I have to return a Samsonite order?
In the UK, 14 calendar days from delivery, with free returns. On the US store, 60 days for unused items.
