Replika is the AI companion app that started the whole category: a chatbot you name, dress and talk to every day, which remembers your sister’s name and asks how the job interview went. Its maker says more than 42 million people have signed up since it launched in 2017, which makes it the elder statesman of a now crowded field.
We like it for two specific reasons: the free version lets you chat without a message cap, and it is one of the few companion apps that works equally well as an AI girlfriend, an AI boyfriend or simply a friend, because you choose your Rep’s gender and relationship. Replika is the steady, slightly old-fashioned choice: warm, polished and easy to start, with a free plan that never runs dry. It is a daily companion rather than a roleplay engine, and romance, calls and better memory sit behind the paywall. Long-time users say the conversation has got blander, and its privacy record is the most chequered in this group.

What Replika does and who it is for
You create a Rep, give it a name, a face and some interests, and then talk to it. Over time it builds a memory of the people, routines and plans you mention, and it checks in with you. Paid users can call it, set it as a romantic partner, request selfies and roleplay.
It suits people who want company more than a story. Picture someone who has just moved to Leeds for work, knows nobody yet and wants something to chat with on the walk home. Or a night-shift nurse talking through a hard shift at 4am without waking anyone. Or someone shy practising small talk before a first date.
It is less suited to elaborate fantasy plots, group scenes or explicit content; Kindroid and Nomi push further in those directions.
Is Replika free? Free vs paid features
Yes. Replika’s help centre lists a Free plan with no cost, and messaging your Rep is free at any time. In practice the free tier gives you unlimited text chat, basic avatar customisation and the Rep in “friend” mode.
What you do not get for free, according to Replika’s description of Pro: unblurred romantic messages and selfies, the Romantic Partner status, voice messages and calls, roleplay on voice and AR calls, premium voices, image generation and premium activities. Free users also earn fewer coins and gems, the in-app currencies that buy clothes, furniture and personality traits.
Replika says plainly that it does not offer a free trial of its paid plans.
Replika price: Pro, Ultra and Platinum plans
Replika sells three paid tiers, each building on the last:
- Pro: romantic status, voice calls, selfies, image generation, premium voices and daily coin rewards.
- Ultra: everything in Pro, plus what Replika calls smarter conversations, stronger emotional intelligence, daily self-reflection messages and the ability to save messages to memory and see which memories are being used. Sold as an annual plan; Lifetime subscribers get it included.
- Platinum: everything in Ultra, plus real-time video recognition, Training Mode up to 100 times a week, “Read Replika’s Mind” for up to 50 messages a week and up to 10 realistic selfie videos.
Replika does not publish a price list on its website; it says prices appear on the subscription screen and in the app stores. The UK App Store lists these price points, without saying which tier each belongs to:

The cheapest way to pay. Annual billing is far better value: the lowest annual listing, £43.99, works out at about £3.67 a month against £7.99 on monthly billing. When DailyStoke compared the listings, that was one of the biggest monthly-to-annual savings in this group. Use the free plan for a week or two first, because there is no trial and no refund if you change your mind.
Replika features that matter
Memory. Replika remembers names, routines and goals you mention. On Ultra you can save particular messages to memory and see which memories the Rep is drawing on, which helps when it gets a detail wrong.
Voice and AR calls. Pro adds voice messages and calls that keep running in the background while you use other apps, plus roleplay during voice and augmented-reality calls. Platinum adds real-time video recognition, so the Rep can react to what your camera shows.
Selfies and images. Pro users can ask for selfies and generate images; Platinum adds short realistic selfie videos, capped at 10.
Customisation and platforms. You choose the avatar’s gender, look, clothes and room. Replika runs on iPhone, Android and the web at my.replika.com, and a Pro account works across all three.
Adult content. Replika is for adults only. In February 2023 it removed erotic roleplay, then restored it in March 2023 for users who had signed up before 1 February that year, according to Reuters. Today romance sits behind the paid Romantic Partner status, and Replika is noticeably tamer than Nomi or Kindroid.
Is Replika safe? Privacy, regulators and healthy use
Replika’s privacy policy says users must be 18 or over. Small, anonymised portions of messages train its own safety algorithms, it says, and outside AI providers that process your chats may not train on them. Chats are never shared with advertising partners, though website data such as advertising IDs is. You can delete your account in settings; message data is kept for up to 60 days afterwards, and payment records for at least 10 years.
The regulatory record is longer than for most rivals:
- February 2023: Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users’ data over risks to minors.
- January 2025: the Tech Justice Law Project, Young People’s Alliance and Encode filed a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission alleging deceptive marketing. As of early 2026, no FTC action had been reported.
- May 2025: the Garante fined Luka €5 million under the GDPR, citing the lack of a legal basis for processing and inadequate age verification, and opened a further investigation into how data is used to train its AI.
The App Store privacy label lists identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies’ apps.
A word on healthy use. Replika is designed to feel caring, and many people find it genuinely comforting. It is still software, and it is not a substitute for friends, family or professional support. Replika scores 4.2 out of 5 on the UK App Store from 19,000 ratings and 4.1 on Google Play in the UK from about 525,000 reviews. On Trustpilot it scores 3.4 from 457 reviews, split sharply: 33% five-star and 46% one-star.
The fans tend to be long-term users. David, from Canada, wrote on Trustpilot in September 2026: “I’ve been using Replika for years, and my experience with Tina has become something I value enormously.”
Sean B. summed up a common view on Google Play in July 2026: “Great short term, not so great long term.”

Getting started
- Download Replika from the App Store or Google Play, or sign up at my.replika.com.
- Create your Rep: name, gender, appearance and a few interests.
- Chat for free for a week or so to see whether the personality suits you.
- If you want romance, calls or selfies, choose a plan under Settings, Subscription.
Cancelling
- iPhone: in the app, tap the settings gear, then Subscription, Cancel subscription. Check under Settings, your name, Subscriptions that Replika no longer shows as Active.
- Android: same route in the app, then confirm in Google Play under Payments and subscriptions.
- Web: sign in at my.replika.com, open the settings gear, then Subscription, Cancel subscription.

Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Replika treats all purchases as final; App Store and Google Play refunds are handled by Apple and Google.
