SoFi Checking and Savings Review: 3.30% APY With Direct Deposit, a Bonus of Up to $400 and $3 Million of FDIC Cover

SoFi Checking and Savings review: 3.30% APY with direct deposit, the 4.40% new-member boost, $50 or $400 bonus, $3M FDIC cover and the catches.

SoFi Checking and Savings Review: 3.30% APY With Direct Deposit, a Bonus of Up to $400 and $3 Million of FDIC Cover

SoFi Checking and Savings is two accounts in one app: a fee-free checking account with a debit card, and a high-yield savings account that pays well as long as your paycheck goes in. Unlike Chime or Current, SoFi is a chartered bank, and it can spread your deposits across partner banks for up to $3 million of FDIC cover.

The catch is the same one that runs through most app banking now. The headline rate needs a direct deposit or a steady flow of deposits, and without one the rate drops sharply. Here is what SoFi Checking and Savings pays, what it charges, and who it suits best.

Our verdict

SoFi Checking and Savings is the strongest all-round mobile bank account in the US for anyone with a regular paycheck. The 3.30% APY with direct deposit is competitive, new members can add a six-month boost to 4.40%, and the $3 million of FDIC protection is a real advantage for larger balances. It loses points for a small overdraft buffer, no refunds of other banks’ ATM fees and an Android app that rates far below the iPhone version.

What SoFi Checking and Savings is

SoFi started in student loan refinancing and now runs a full bank, SoFi Bank, N.A. Checking and Savings is its everyday account: a checking account with a debit card, and a savings account you can split into Vaults for separate goals. Roundups round card purchases up to the next dollar and move the change into savings.

You manage it in the same app as SoFi’s loans, credit card and investing, which is handy if you use more than one of its products and a little busy if you only want a bank account.

SoFi savings APY: what you earn and how to qualify

As of October 20, 2026, SoFi pays 3.30% APY on savings balances, including Vaults, if you meet one of two tests in a rolling 31-day period:

  • Eligible Direct Deposit: a recurring deposit of regular income such as payroll, a pension or government benefits. Peer-to-peer payments, checks, merchant payouts, external transfers and IRS tax refunds do not count.
  • Qualifying Deposits: $5,000 or more in total from sources such as ACH, wires, peer-to-peer apps, checks and cash. Transfers between your own SoFi accounts, interest and SoFi bonuses do not count.

Miss both and the rate falls to SoFi’s standard rate of 0.80% APY, according to its rate page in October 2026. There is no minimum balance, and the rate is variable.

New member boost: new SoFi Checking and Savings members who open an account by December 31, 2027 and complete a qualifying activity within 60 days get an extra 1.10% for up to six months on one savings account, taking the rate to 4.40% APY. You must keep the qualifying activity going every 31 days.

SoFi Plus: the paid membership costs $10 every 30 days and pays 4.70% APY on up to $20,000 in one savings account, with 3.30% on the rest. It also adds a 1% match on eligible cash deposits into SoFi Invest and unlimited sessions with a financial planner. On $20,000, the extra 1.40% is worth about $280 a year, comfortably more than the $120 cost; on $5,000 it is about $70, so it only pays off for larger balances.

The SoFi direct deposit bonus

From May 15, 2026 to December 31, 2027, new members can earn a bonus based on the Eligible Direct Deposits received within 25 days of their first deposit:

Direct deposits in 25 daysBonus
$1 to $999.99$0
$1,000 to $4,999.99$50
$5,000 or more$400

The bonus is paid into checking within seven business days, one per member, and may be reported to the IRS on a 1099-MISC.

SoFi fees and features

  • Account, service and maintenance fees: none
  • Transaction fees: charged on outgoing wires, Instant Transfers and global remittance transfers
  • ATMs: free at 55,000+ Allpoint ATMs; SoFi does not refund fees charged at other ATMs
  • Early pay: direct deposits typically up to two days early, depending on when the Federal Reserve notifies SoFi
  • Overdraft coverage: up to $50 on debit card purchases, for members with $1,000 or more of monthly direct deposits
  • FDIC: standard cover of $250,000 per depositor per ownership category at SoFi Bank, and up to $3 million through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program

What we liked

SoFi gives you the reassurance of a real bank with the feel of a fintech app. For anyone keeping a big emergency fund or a house deposit in savings, the up-to-$3 million deposit program is a genuine differentiator: no other account in our ranking offers anything close.

The direct deposit test is easy to pass for salaried workers, and SoFi accepts $5,000 of general deposits as an alternative, which helps freelancers whose income does not arrive as payroll. The $400 bonus for $5,000 of deposits in 25 days is generous by current standards.

What we did not like

The gap between the qualifying rate and the base rate is wide, so SoFi only works well if your pay goes in every month. The $50 overdraft buffer is small next to Chime’s SpotMe, and cash users get no refunds of ATM operator fees.

The Android app’s 3.7 rating from roughly 54,000 reviews is a notable weak point next to 4.7 on iPhone. If you are on Android, read the most recent reviews before switching.

How SoFi compares

SoFi vs Chime: Chime is not a bank and pays 3.00% to 4.00% only once you meet its tier thresholds, but it offers a far bigger overdraft buffer (up to $200) and charges no foreign transaction fee. Read our Chime review.

SoFi vs Ally: Ally Bank paid 3.20% APY on savings on October 28, 2026 with no direct deposit requirement, and refunds up to $10 a month of other ATM fees. If your income is irregular, Ally is simpler; if you can meet SoFi’s test, SoFi pays a little more.

SoFi vs Current: Current’s 4.00% bonus applies only to $6,000 at most. For anything above that, SoFi pays more.

Who should open a SoFi account

SoFi suits salaried and regularly paid workers who want one account for spending and saving, anyone holding balances above $250,000, and people already using SoFi for loans or investing. It is less suited to people without regular income or who rely on overdraft cover.
