Australia won five races in a row over the weekend to overcome their nervous start at the inaugural SailGP event in Sydney Harbour and lead the standings by three points.
Japan—captained by Ozzy Nathan Outteridge—headed into Sunday’s races leading the table by one point, but Australia proved they were firmly over their fourth-place finish in Race 1 by winning the remaining five races in succession.
Skipper Tom Slingsby was very pleased with his team’s performance and said in the wake of Australia’s result, per Wide World of Sports:
“It felt like he (Outteridge) was always there, he was always one mistake away and he was sitting there lurking. If we made that mistake, he would have pounced.
“We learnt from yesterday and we improved more than I could have even hoped we would. I couldn’t be happier with how today went. I hold our team to a very high standard and they over-delivered – it was unbelievable.”
