The inaugural weekend of SailGP got off to a fine start for hosts Australia and an impressive Japan team, the latter of whom finished among the medals in all three races on the opening day.

Sydney Harbour hosted the first batch of races, and 2012 Olympic Laser gold medallist Tom Slingsby skippered Australia to fourth in the first race before making up with two victories in the remaining two.

Japan were captained by Nathan Outteridge, who represented Australia in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics but put those allegiances to one side as the Asian representatives won the first race and added two more second-place finishes. They lead Australia by one point in the standings.
