The United States women’s water polo team completed a clean sweep of Greece in their friendly series on Sunday and triumphed 18-7 at the University of the Pacific.
Makenzie Fischer scored five of those goals and was the leading scorer on the day, while Maggie Steffens and Alys Williams each contributed three goals apiece.
That result means Team USA won each of their four friendly matches against Greece and head for the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, later this month full of confidence.
The Greek guests succeeded with only one of their nine power plays and trailed 12-1 at half-time in what looked to be a one-sided fixture at times.
Water polo has been a forte for the United States women in recent years, and they’re hoping to become the first country to win three successive Olympic gold medals in this category since Hungary did so between 2000 and 2008.
