Owen Wright was a surprise winner at the 2019 Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o this week, beating two-time World Surf League champion Gabriel Medina to clinch his first victory of the year.
Wright, 29, became the seventh different surfer to win in seven championship events this season, keeping the 2019 WSL Men’s Championship Tour wide open with four events left to go.
The Australian came to Tahiti this week having failed to win a WSL Tour event in two years—his last win came at the 2017 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast—but an impressive end to his final saw him triumph over old rival Medina.
Wright said of his win: “I can’t be happier. I was against the ropes, and Gabby was always going to be the toughest matchup. I had no priority, just snuck into those few on the inside and tried to get as deep as possible and still make it.”
