Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty has announced he will not compete at the inaugural FINA Champions Swim Series this year as he intends to focus his preparations on the World Championships.
The 24-year-old British star took to Twitter on Wednesday and detailed his decision to opt out of the 2019 Champions Swim Series, which will run from March until May:
“I have decided not to participate in Fina’s new Champions Series due to focusing my preparation on the World Championships and beyond. However, it’s definitely a step in the right direction for the sport.”
The 24-year-old—who won the 100-metre breaststroke gold and a relay silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics—had previously demonstrated support for the International Swimming League, which has encountered opposition from world swimming body FINA.
