Ice Boating on Lake Erie is Calm and Chaotic at the Same Time

The words ‘ice’ and ‘boating’ may seem contradictory and asymmetric, but John Greiner is one of hundreds of sailors in Toledo, Ohio capable of showing just what can be achieved when the terms are combined. Lake Erie’s Maumee Bay freezes every winter and gives way to temperatures that freeze over its surface, allowing those from Toledo Ice Yacht Club their opening to take off at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Les Lashaway acts as commodore of the Ice Yacht Club—a form of president—who said sailing in  normal, unfrozen waters was “boring compared to this,” per Laura Johnston of Cleveland.com.
