Long-distance swimmers from across the United Kingdom were disappointed to learn both men’s and women’s elite 10-kilometre races at the 2019 Great North Swim had been cancelled.
A statement released by British Swimming said the forecast had resulted in the events being axed and that cold weather conditions wouldn’t be “conducive to elite high performance open water swimming or a British team selection race.”
Those hoping to qualify for the World Championships through the elite race will have to hope their coaches select them from the lottery of contenders hoping to make the cut.
The Great North Swim’s mass participation race at Lake Windermere will go ahead as planned.
