Teenage icon Caroline Marks continues to astound her fans due to her sensational surfing skills, but she scored a major win for her gender after triumphing at the 2019 Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast this past week.
The World Surf League (WSL) has made great strides to promote equality and balanced pay among its athletes, with Marks making a small bit of history after clinching her $100,000 cheque.
The Boost Mobile Pro was held in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, the men’s equivalent WSL Championship Tour event, but this was the first time that male and female top prizes were the same.
Marks said of her win: “I’m really emotional right now. I can’t believe it. I’m speechless. It’s incredible to be a part of this sport. I just want to thank everyone at WSL — I’m so grateful. It’s so amazing to be a part of women’s surfing.”
