OsmAnd Review: The Most Powerful Offline Map on a Phone, From Free to £39.99 a Year

OsmAnd review: free version limits, Maps+ from £14.99, Pro at £39.99 a year, contour lines for hikers and how it compares with Organic Maps.

OsmAnd Review: The Most Powerful Offline Map on a Phone, From Free to £39.99 a Year

OsmAnd has been turning OpenStreetMap into offline maps since 2010, and it shows. Almost everything is configurable: map styles, contour intervals, route profiles, widgets on the navigation screen. For hikers and long-distance travellers that depth is the attraction; for everyone else it can feel like a cockpit.

Our verdict: OsmAnd is the offline map app we would choose for walking, cycling and touring abroad, especially once you buy Maps+ for unlimited downloads and contour lines. Pro is worth it only if you want hourly map updates, 3D relief or cloud backup. If you want something simple, start with Organic Maps instead.

What OsmAnd does

OsmAnd downloads OpenStreetMap data country by country, then gives you search, turn-by-turn navigation for driving, walking and cycling, trip recording and GPX import and export, all without a connection. Plugins add contour lines, hillshade, nautical charts, Wikipedia articles, Wikivoyage travel guides and an astronomy view of the night sky.

Three places it earns its keep:

  • A week on the GR20 in Corsica. Download the island, switch on contour lines and the hiking map style, load the GPX track, and follow your progress with no signal at all.
  • A cycle tour along the Danube. Bicycle routing on OpenStreetMap paths and a trip recorder that logs every day.
  • A road trip in Albania where coverage is patchy. Offline search finds the guesthouse, and Android Auto or CarPlay puts the route on the car’s screen.

OsmAnd price: free, Maps+ and Pro

Free. Offline and online navigation, offline search, trip recording, GPX tools, route planning, favourites and markers. The limit is downloads: OsmAnd’s documentation says five maps on iPhone and seven on Android, with monthly updates counting towards the total. Hourly updates, CarPlay, 3D relief and topography are excluded on iPhone.

Maps+ adds, according to OsmAnd’s documentation: no adverts, unlimited map downloads and monthly updates, CarPlay or Android Auto, topography data with contour lines and terrain, Wikipedia and Wikivoyage offline, nautical depths, external sensor support and the astronomy plugin.

Pro adds everything in Maps+ plus OsmAnd Cloud Pro for backup and sync, hourly live map updates, 3D relief, a weather plugin, full vehicle metrics, elevation widgets, custom colour schemes and smart folders for tracks.

Pro, monthly£5.99$5.99€5.99

US and EU prices are OsmAnd’s own published figures. On Android there is also OsmAnd+, a separate paid app with the same features and pricing as Maps+.

The cheapest way to pay. If you will use OsmAnd for more than a few years, the one-off Maps+ purchase beats the subscription. Purchases can be linked to an OsmAnd Cloud account and restored on another platform, so buying once covers your iPhone and Android tablet. OsmAnd’s team said in its 2026 New Year post that prices would rise slightly during the year, so check the store before you buy.

What we liked

It does everything offline. Search, routing and recording all work in aeroplane mode once maps are downloaded.

Built for walkers. Contour lines, hillshade, a hiking map style and waymarked route overlays turn OpenStreetMap into a usable walking map across much of Europe.

Fair pricing with a one-off option. Maps+ at £69.99 once is unusual in a market of subscriptions.

Cross-platform purchases. OsmAnd made Maps+ and Pro shareable across iPhone, Android and web in 2025.

Privacy. The UK App Store privacy label lists no data linked to your identity; usage and crash data are collected but not linked to you.

What we did not like

The interface. Menus nest inside menus, and settings are spread across profiles. Expect an evening of fiddling before your first trip.

Free downloads run out fast. Five maps on iPhone, with updates counting, goes quickly if you travel through several countries.

Map data varies. OpenStreetMap is superb in much of Europe and patchy elsewhere. In Britain, it shows paths that are not rights of way and misses some that are. For British hills, use OS mapping as well.

Some features hidden behind Pro. 3D relief and the weather layer feel like features that could sit in Maps+.

OsmAnd vs Organic Maps. Organic Maps is free, private and simple, with contours and hiking paths included. OsmAnd offers far more control, track tools and plugins. Most people should start with Organic Maps and move to OsmAnd if they hit its limits.

OsmAnd vs Guru Maps. Guru Maps is more polished on iPhone and Apple Watch, with offline CarPlay. OsmAnd is deeper and cheaper on Android.

OsmAnd vs OS Maps. For walking in Britain, OS Maps’ 1:25,000 mapping is more authoritative. See our OS Maps review.

Who should use OsmAnd

Use it if you hike, cycle or drive for long stretches abroad and want the most capable offline map with GPX tools. Buy Maps+ once and keep it for years. Skip it if you want something you can hand to a relative without a tutorial; Organic Maps or Apple Maps will suit them better.
