ZOLEO is the satellite communicator for people who would rather not learn a new gadget. There is no screen to squint at: you message from an app that feels like any chat app on your phone, and the small puck in your pocket quietly takes over when the signal disappears. Friends and family text you on a normal phone number. It is good value, though a plan shake-up in August 2026 changed the sums.
Our verdict
ZOLEO is the cheapest way to get capable two-way satellite messaging with a hardware SOS button, and its single-number, switch-anywhere messaging is still the friendliest in the business. The trade-off is total dependence on your phone for anything beyond SOS and check-ins, plus live tracking that costs extra. Buy it if you always carry a phone; buy a Garmin inReach Mini 3 if you want a device that stands alone.

What ZOLEO does
The ZOLEO device connects to your phone by Bluetooth, with a range of up to 50 metres. You write messages in the ZOLEO app and they travel by whichever route is available: mobile data, Wi-Fi or the Iridium satellite network. That is the clever bit. Your ZOLEO account has its own dedicated SMS number and email address, so the conversation stays in one thread whether you are in a café in Fort William or on the Knoydart peninsula.
On the device there are three things you can do without a phone: send a check-in (with optional GPS position), trigger SOS from a covered button that guards against accidental presses, and cancel an SOS. Once SOS is triggered, ZOLEO’s 24/7 monitoring service can message you through the app with updates as the rescue is organised, which ZOLEO calls progressive SOS. Global Rescue is listed as a ZOLEO partner.
The app also delivers weather forecasts for any location, powered by Xweather, and a Medical Assist service for non-emergency medical advice.

ZOLEO price and plans in the UK
UK retailer GTC listed the device at £149 including VAT in October 2026, down from £178.80. Prices move around, so shop about.
In August 2026 ZOLEO replaced its three UK plans (Basic, In Touch and Unlimited) with two:
| Plan | Monthly price | Messages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare | £17.99 | 50 satellite messages | Extra messages 50p each; check-ins count towards the allowance |
| Protect | £29.99 | Unlimited (fair use) | Unlimited check-ins, no overage |
Both plans include SOS with 24/7 monitoring, which does not count against your allowance. Activation fell from £39.99 to £19.99, and there is a three-month minimum term. After that you can pause for £4 a month, but SOS does not work while paused. Live breadcrumb tracking requires the Location Share+ add-on at £4.50 a month, which shares your position at intervals from six minutes to four hours.
Messages over mobile or Wi-Fi do not use your satellite allowance, which stretches the Prepare plan further than its 50-message limit suggests.
What we liked
- Friendliest messaging. A dedicated number and email mean the people at home need no app, and replies arrive in one thread.
- Seamless switching. Mobile, Wi-Fi and satellite are handled automatically.
- Price of entry. At around £149 it is roughly £100 cheaper than the cheapest Garmin inReach.
- Physical SOS and check-in buttons. You can raise the alarm even if your phone is dead.
- Robust build. IP68 and MIL-STD 810G ratings suit boats, kayaks and wet hills.
- Lower activation fee. £19.99 against Garmin’s £39.99.
What we did not like
- No screen. Without a working phone you cannot read or write messages.
- Tracking costs extra. £4.50 a month for Location Share+ on top of either plan.
- Pause is not free. Garmin suspends inReach plans for nothing; ZOLEO charges £4 a month, and only after three months.
- Plan turbulence. The August 2026 changes left some customers unhappy, and UK retailer GPS Training said it had paused stocking ZOLEO devices while the contract situation settled.
How ZOLEO compares
ZOLEO vs Garmin inReach Messenger. The inReach Messenger (£249.99) is also phone-first, but it has a small screen for reading and replying if your phone fails, lasts up to 28 days at 10-minute tracking and can be suspended free for up to 12 months. Garmin’s Enabled plan costs £7.99 a month with pay-as-you-go messages, which undercuts ZOLEO for very light users. ZOLEO wins on device price and its dedicated phone number.
ZOLEO vs Garmin inReach Mini 3. The Mini 3 (£389.99) has a colour touchscreen and works fully without a phone. It costs much more but is the better choice for solo, multi-day trips where your phone is the weak link.
ZOLEO vs SPOT X. SPOT X has its own keyboard and a dedicated number but runs on Globalstar, which has coverage gaps, and weighs 198.4g. ZOLEO’s Iridium coverage is global.
Who should buy ZOLEO
ZOLEO suits walkers, wild campers and paddlers who already treat their phone as their main device, keep it charged with a power bank and want the simplest way for home to stay in touch. The Protect plan is good value for heavy users such as sailors on long passages. Choose an inReach instead if you need to message without your phone or want free suspension between occasional trips.
ZOLEO FAQs
Does ZOLEO work without a phone?
Partly. Without a phone you can send a check-in with your location, trigger SOS and cancel SOS using the device’s buttons. Reading and writing messages requires the ZOLEO app on a paired phone or tablet.
How much does ZOLEO cost a month in the UK?
Prepare costs £17.99 a month for 50 satellite messages and Protect costs £29.99 for unlimited messages, after a £19.99 activation fee and with a three-month minimum term. Live tracking via Location Share+ adds £4.50 a month.
Can I pause my ZOLEO subscription?
Yes, after the first three months, for £4 a month. SOS is unavailable while your plan is paused.
Who responds when I press SOS on a ZOLEO?
A 24/7 emergency monitoring service receives your alert and location, keeps you updated through the app and coordinates with local rescue services. If you have phone signal, call 999 or 112 first; satellite SOS is for when you cannot.
What battery life does ZOLEO have?
ZOLEO quotes more than 200 hours. Messaging over mobile or Wi-Fi when available saves the device’s battery.
