Staysure Review: Travel Insurance for Medical Conditions, Over-50s and Everyone Else

Staysure review: Basic, Comprehensive and Signature cover, medical screening for 1,300+ conditions, winter sports, who underwrites it and how it compares.

Staysure Review: Travel Insurance for Medical Conditions, Over-50s and Everyone Else

Ask anyone who has tried to insure a holiday after a cancer diagnosis, a heart attack or a hip replacement, and the name Staysure tends to come up. The company was founded in 2004 by Ryan Howsam to cover people older travellers and those with health conditions struggled to insure, and it now says it has helped more than 12 million people since 2005. It sells to all ages, but medical screening is still the heart of the product.

Our verdict: Staysure Comprehensive is a well-rounded policy with unlimited medical cover, sensible cancellation limits and screening for more than 1,300 conditions, which makes it one of the first places to quote if your health complicates things. Signature is worth the extra for expensive trips. Basic is cheaper for a reason, and the company’s Gibraltar structure is worth understanding before you buy.

What Staysure sells

Staysure’s core product is single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance at three levels, plus long-stay, cruise, family, group and winter sports cover. It also sells expat travel insurance for people living in Spain, France and Portugal, and pet insurance under a separate brand.

All policies include Travel Doctor, a free 24/7 non-emergency video GP service powered by Air Doctor, with up to three appointments per insured person per policy, subject to geographical restrictions. It is a useful extra for the ear infection or rash that does not justify a hospital trip.

Cover levels and limits

The figures below come from Staysure’s July 2026 policy wording, which covers all three levels, and its current Comprehensive IPID (reference IP_SS_LC_0726_V5).

Which?, in its May 2025 policy comparison, notes that Signature’s emergency dental cover is limited to £500 and that it does not cover the bankruptcy of a holiday supplier.

Price: what drives a Staysure premium

Staysure quotes individually, and the price depends heavily on the medical conditions you declare, your age, your destination (worldwide including the USA costs the most), trip length and cover level. Adding single-trip winter sports cover, raising the cancellation limit or adding gadget or car hire excess cover all increase the premium. We have not quoted a price here because a figure for one healthy 40-year-old tells you nothing about your own quote.

Two practical points. Annual policies cap the length of each trip: 50 days if you are 70 or under (one trip can be extended to 100 days for an extra premium) and 35 days from 71, with no more than 183 days abroad in total. Single-trip policies run for up to 104 days. And annual Comprehensive and Signature include winter sports at no extra cost, which can tip the maths for skiers.

Medical conditions and screening

Screening is where Staysure earns its reputation. You answer questions online or by phone about each condition, medications and any tests or treatment you are waiting for. Staysure has dedicated pages for conditions including cancer, heart conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure, stroke, asthma and those awaiting surgery.

The exclusions in the IPID are the usual ones, and worth reading before you buy: pre-existing conditions are excluded unless agreed; claims linked to symptoms of an undiagnosed condition present when you buy are excluded; and anyone awaiting medical investigation or test results at the start of the policy is not covered for that condition. Travelling against medical advice, or to get treatment abroad, is also excluded.

Winter sports

Single-trip Comprehensive and Signature policies need winter sports added as an extra; annual Comprehensive and Signature include it. Cover includes on-piste skiing and snowboarding, glacier skiing, guided cross-country skiing, equipment and ski passes, equipment hire, unused ski school fees, and disruption from avalanches. Off-piste is covered only “within the confines of the ski resort on recognised and authorised areas”, in the words of Staysure’s winter sports page, and heli-skiing is excluded. See our winter sports travel insurance guide.

What we liked

  • Unlimited medical cover on Comprehensive and Signature, single trip and annual.
  • Medical screening at scale. More than 1,300 conditions and a 97% acceptance rate for customers with conditions, by Staysure’s figures.
  • No upper age limit on single-trip and annual policies.
  • Strong independent ratings. Defaqto 5 Star for Comprehensive and Signature, and Which? Best Buy status for both, according to Staysure.
  • Claims acceptance close to average. Which? cites FCA data showing Great Lakes Insurance accepted about 80% to 85% of claims on several policy types in 2023.

What we did not like

  • The structure takes some reading. The seller is authorised in Gibraltar, the administrator in England and the underwriter is a separate UK insurer.
  • Basic is basic. £5m of medical cover, £500 of cancellation, no baggage delay cover and a £129 excess make it a false economy for most trips.
  • Strict on undiagnosed symptoms. If you are awaiting tests, that condition is not covered.
  • Supplier failure not covered on Signature, according to Which?.

How Staysure compares

Staysure vs AllClear. Both are medical specialists with no upper age limit and screening for more than 1,300 conditions. AllClear’s Platinum policy offers unlimited medical cover, and AllClear says it quoted in more than 99.5% of cases in 2025. Get both quotes if your conditions are complex.

Staysure vs Saga. Saga is aimed at over-50s, with up to £15m of medical cover on Plus and cancellation cover up to £40,000 by phone. Staysure’s unlimited medical on Comprehensive is the stronger headline.

Staysure vs True Traveller. True Traveller is better for younger backpackers and active trips, with 92 activities as standard and cover you can buy from abroad, but multi-trip cover stops at 65. See our True Traveller review.

Who should buy Staysure?

Quote Staysure first if you have a pre-existing condition, are over 65, or are booking an expensive holiday that needs high cancellation cover. Comprehensive suits most people; Signature makes sense for costly cruises and long-haul trips. If you are young, healthy and heading off with a rucksack, a backpacker specialist will usually suit you better.
