The World Surf League (WSL) has announced its decision to retain the Margaret River Pro as a scheduled event after agreeing a new contract with the venue until 2021 despite shark fears.
The 2018 event at Margaret River in Perth, Australia was called off midway through following two non-fatal shark attacks in an area nearby. The Australian Associated Press (h/t the Guardian) reported Margaret River’s future as a venue was in doubt before securing an extension to its contract.
Two-time world champion Gabriel Medina has previously expressed concern with surfing at the venue and said: “I just don’t feel comfortable surfing there. I will never surf by myself here because it’s not safe.”
