Brock Whiston took gold in the SM8 200-metre individual medley on Saturday, denying British team-mate Alice Tai her seventh final victory of this summer’s competition.
American Jessica Long finished second in the event while Whiston, 22, celebrated triumph in her first appearance at the World Para-swimming Championships.
The result was Great Britain’s 15th gold medal of the competition and left the nation with 39 medals overall, fourth in the table behind leaders Ukraine, Russia (second) and Italy (third) preparing for Sunday’s final round of events.
Whiston spoke to BBC Sport and said: “To have raced Jess and Alice, two of the best swimmers in this category, and come away with a gold is amazing. I don’t think it has sunk in. Jess’s world record was incredible and to now hold it, I can’t ask for anything more from my first major championship.”
