GeForce NOW review: the free tier and its queues, Performance and Ultimate prices in $, € and £, the 100-hour cap, 12-month savings and the speed you need.

GeForce NOW Review: the Free Tier, Ultimate’s RTX 5080 Power and 17% Off by the Year

GeForce NOW does something the console subscriptions do not: it streams PC games you already own, from Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, Xbox and other stores, from NVIDIA’s data centres to almost any screen. You pay for the hardware time, not the games. With Xbox capping its own cloud gaming from November 2026, NVIDIA’s service, with 100 hours a month on paid plans, has become the default choice for serious streaming. Here is what each tier costs and what your connection needs. For the wider market, see our gaming hub.

What GeForce NOW is, and who owns it

GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service, run from the company’s base in Santa Clara, California, and launched to the public in February 2020. NVIDIA operates it directly in North America, Europe, Japan and India, and licenses it to Alliance partners elsewhere. The important point for buyers is that GeForce NOW does not sell games. You link your store accounts and stream titles you have bought, or free-to-play games such as Fortnite. PC Game Pass titles that support the service can be streamed too.

*NVIDIA bills UK members in sterling at checkout; the figures shown are our conversions of the US price (or the euro price, for the 12-month Performance plan and Day Passes), because we could not confirm NVIDIA’s own sterling list prices.

Regional differences. Europe pays more. €21.99 a month for Ultimate is about US$24.69 at our exchange rate, nearly a quarter above the US price of US$19.99, though euro prices include VAT and US prices do not.

Performance is the sensible plan for a laptop or TV at 1080p or 1440p.

Ultimate runs on NVIDIA’s Blackwell-generation servers, which NVIDIA describes as RTX 5080-class, with ray tracing, DLSS 4 and Reflex. It is the plan for 4K TVs, high-refresh monitors and ultrawide screens.

Add-ons. Paid members can buy extra hours when the 100 runs out, and Install-to-Play storage for games not already set up on NVIDIA’s servers: 200GB for US$2.99, 500GB for US$4.99 or 1TB for US$7.99 a month.

The free tier, the queue and the 100-hour cap

The free tier is a genuine way to test the service, but it is built to push you to pay. Sessions end after an hour, you watch up to two minutes of adverts before starting, and you queue behind paying members. At busy evening times the wait can be long. Free members also play on basic servers, so the picture varies by game.

On paid plans, the 100-hour monthly allowance is generous for most people: it is more than three hours a day. Up to 15 unused hours roll over. If you run out, you drop to free-tier conditions unless you buy more time; NVIDIA has priced extra Performance hours at US$2.99 for 15. Founders members from the early days keep unlimited playtime unless they upgrade to Ultimate.

A worked example: annual billing and the commuter

The annual saving. Ultimate paid monthly costs US$239.88 a year (£180.01 / €213.64). The 12-month plan costs US$199.99, a saving of US$39.89, or 17%. In the eurozone, €263.88 a year monthly falls to €219.99, saving €43.89.

The commuter test. A software tester in Bristol plays for 40 minutes each way on his phone over 5G, five days a week: about 28 hours a month, comfortably inside the 100-hour allowance, where Xbox’s 15-hour Ultimate cap would run out in under three weeks. The constraint is the network, not the plan. NVIDIA asks for under 80ms of latency to its data centre and 15Mbps for 720p at 60fps, or 25Mbps for 1080p. At 15Mbps, streaming uses about 6.75GB an hour, so his commute would burn through roughly 9GB a day. He needs an unlimited data plan, a phone controller clip and a route without dead spots. On iPhone he plays through the browser, and NVIDIA says a gamepad is required.

Game library highlights

Because you bring your own games, the library is defined by which publishers allow streaming. NVIDIA lists more than 2,000 games for Install-to-Play, and the supported list runs from big Steam and Epic releases to free-to-play games such as Fortnite, plus Xbox PC Game Pass games where the publisher has opted in. NVIDIA adds titles every Thursday in its GFN Thursday posts. The churn risk is different from Game Pass: a game can leave GeForce NOW if its publisher withdraws, but you still own it on your PC store.

Devices supported

  • Windows, macOS and Linux apps
  • Chromebooks
  • Android phones and tablets (Android 7.0 or later)
  • iPhone and iPad through Safari (iOS 15.4 or later)
  • LG and Samsung smart TVs from 2020 to 2025, SHIELD TV, Android TV, Chromecast and selected Fire TV sticks
  • Steam Deck and VR headsets
  • Browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera GX and Safari on Mac

For the best results NVIDIA recommends a wired connection or 5GHz Wi-Fi at home.

How to subscribe and cancel

  1. Create an NVIDIA account and download the app, or go to play.geforcenow.com.
  2. Pick Free, Performance or Ultimate, and monthly or 12-month billing; or try a Day Pass first.
  3. Link your Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, Xbox or other accounts and sync your library.
  4. Launch a game; paid members get priority over the free queue.
  5. To cancel or downgrade, open the membership section of your NVIDIA account. If you bought through Amazon, cancel in your Amazon account.

Downgrading to Free forfeits any account balance, and Founders who cancel lose their legacy terms for good. A Day Pass bought before upgrading can be credited towards a recurring plan for a short window.

App ratings and customer service

GeForce NOW scores 3.3 out of 5 from about 123K reviews on Google Play. There is no App Store app, because iPhone and iPad users play in Safari. Support runs through NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW help pages and knowledge base, with a server status page.

What users say

GeForce NOW’s Trustpilot page scores 1.5 out of 5, but from only 46 reviews. The themes are consistent with what we hear elsewhere: lag and disconnects when the connection or the nearest server is not good enough, queues on the free tier at peak times, frustration with the monthly hour limits, and slow ticket replies. Satisfied users tend to describe it as a way to play demanding PC games on a MacBook or TV without spending on a graphics card.

GeForce NOW FAQs

How long is the GeForce NOW free tier queue?
It varies by time and region. NVIDIA does not promise short waits, and evening queues can be long; paid members get priority.

Is GeForce NOW worth it?
If you own PC games but not a powerful PC, yes. Performance at US$9.99 a month is the value pick; Ultimate is for 4K and high-refresh screens.

What is the GeForce NOW 100-hour limit?
Paid plans include 100 hours a month, with up to 15 unused hours carried over. Extra hours can be bought.

GeForce NOW Performance vs Ultimate: what is the difference?
Performance streams up to 1440p at 60fps. Ultimate uses RTX 5080-class servers for up to 4K at 120fps, 5K and 360fps modes, with longer sessions.

Is there a GeForce NOW promo code?
No Promo Code is needed. The free tier, Day Passes and 12-month billing, about 17% cheaper, are the official savings.

What internet speed do I need for GeForce NOW?
15Mbps for 720p, 25Mbps for 1080p, 45Mbps for 4K at 120fps, and under 80ms of latency.

Can I play GeForce NOW on iPhone over 5G?
Yes, in Safari with a controller, if your 5G signal is strong and stable. Expect heavy data use.

Can I play Game Pass games on GeForce NOW?
Yes, PC Game Pass titles that publishers have enabled, when you link your Xbox account.

How do I cancel GeForce NOW?
In the membership section of your NVIDIA account, or through Amazon if you bought there.

Does a VPN help GeForce NOW?
Usually not: a VPN adds a hop and latency. See our NordVPN review for when one is worth using.

Verdict

GeForce NOW is the best cloud gaming service for anyone who already owns PC games, and Xbox’s new cloud caps have widened its lead. Performance gives a laptop or TV console-quality graphics for less than a console subscription; Ultimate is startlingly good on a fast fibre line. It is not a games library, though, and it is only as good as your connection. Try the free tier, then a Day Pass, before committing for a year.
