Gabriel Medina is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2019 Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o and become the first surfer to successfully defend their title at the break Teahupo’o in Taiarapu, Tahiti.
No surfer has won back-to-back crowns in this event, but two-time winner Medina (2014, 2018) could break new ground if he emerges victorious on Sunder, September 1.
Medina, 25, sits seventh in the 2019 World Surf League Men’s Championship Tour rankings and recently won his first event on this year’s tour at the Corona J-Bay Open in South Africa.
He comes in as a 10/3 (4.33) favourite with Paddy Power, while Owen Wright, Julian Wilson and Italo Ferreira each sit joint-second with the bookmakers at 7/1 (8.00).
Wilson won this event on the 2017 WSL Championship Tour, while Kelly Slater has won the Tahiti Pro Teahupo’o five times, at least three more than any other surfer. His most recent win was in 2016, while his first came all the way back in 2000, and he’s not far off the top odds contenders at 9/1 (10.00).
