Komoot Review: A One-Off £29.99 World Pack, Premium at £59.99 and 45 Million Users

Komoot review: the free region, map packs vs Premium at £59.99 a year, offline navigation, Garmin sync and how it compares with AllTrails and OS Maps.

Komoot Review: A One-Off £29.99 World Pack, Premium at £59.99 and 45 Million Users

Komoot is a route planner for people who would rather draw their own line on the map than follow someone else’s. Tell it you are on a gravel bike, a road bike or on foot, and it works out a route to suit, with surface types, climbs and a list of “Highlights” that other users have recommended along the way. It started in Potsdam in 2010 and now claims around 45 million users.

We like it for its routing brain, which is genuinely good at finding quiet lanes and bridleways between two points, and for its one-off map packs, a rare chance to pay once rather than forever. Here is our Komoot review: what the free account still does, the difference between the World Pack and Premium, and how it stacks up against AllTrails and OS Maps.

Our verdict

Komoot is still the best phone-and-web route planner for mixed cycling and walking, and the World Pack remains one of the fairest deals in outdoor apps. The catch is change: since Bending Spoons bought it, Komoot has trimmed the free offer, nudged new users towards Premium and raised prices. If you plan a lot of rides and walks, buy the World Pack and add Premium only if you need its extras. If you just want a pre-made walk with reviews, AllTrails is simpler.

Pros

  • Excellent sport-aware routing for road, gravel, MTB, hiking and running
  • World Pack is a one-off purchase covering maps everywhere
  • Offline maps and turn-by-turn voice navigation with any map you own
  • Strong device sync, including live sync to Garmin and the Bosch e-bike Flow app
  • Community Highlights add local tips to your route
  • First region free for new accounts

Cons

  • Premium has climbed to £59.99 a year
  • Offline mode does not reroute you if you go off course
  • Free trials of Premium are not always offered
  • Big staff cuts after the 2025 takeover, and many long-time users are unhappy
  • Support draws heavy criticism on Trustpilot
  • App Store privacy label says identifiers are used to track you across other apps

What Komoot does and who it is for

Komoot plans a route from A to B (or a loop) for your chosen sport, then guides you along it with voice directions. Every plan shows distance, climbing, estimated time and a breakdown of surfaces, so you know before you start whether half of it is muddy track.

It is built for people who plan. Three situations where it shines:

  • You have a Sunday morning free and want a 60km road loop from home that avoids the A-road. Komoot will usually find the lanes.
  • You are cycling from Bristol to Bath for the weekend and want the traffic-free path with a pub stop. Set waypoints, check the surface breakdown and send it to your bike computer.
  • A walking holiday in the Dolomites, with days split between huts. Premium’s multi-day planner breaks it into stages and suggests places to stay.

Is Komoot free? Free vs paid features

Partly. Anyone can plan routes anywhere on the standard Komoot map, with basic cycling and hiking overlays. To follow a route with directions or record, though, you need an activated region, and first-time users get one single region of their choice free. That free region covers a city and its surroundings.

Paying comes in two forms:

Maps (one-off). A Single Region, a Region Bundle or the World Pack, each tied to your account for life. Maps include turn-by-turn voice navigation, offline use, lifelong map updates, GPX download and sending routes to devices.

Premium (subscription). Worldwide maps and navigation, plus multi-day route planning, Personal Collections, Live Tracking for friends and family, weather on route, sport-specific map overlays such as surface detail and gradient, 3D maps and a Komoot map on Garmin devices.

One wrinkle from March 2025: new accounts that had not bought or activated a map lost free route syncing to devices. People who activated a map before the end of February 2025 kept it.

Komoot price: plans and the cheapest way to pay

UK App Store prices; dollar and euro figures are conversions for comparison.

PlanUK priceUS$ equivalent€ equivalent
First single regionFreeFreeFree
World Pack (one-off)£29.99$39.96€35.59
World Pack welcome offer£19.99$26.64€23.72
Premium, yearly£59.99$79.94€71.19
Premium, shorter plans in app£4.99 and £7.99$6.65 and $10.65€5.92 and €9.48
Family Plan£6.99$9.31€8.30

The App Store does not label the length of the shorter Premium and Family plans. When Komoot relaunched its app in September 2025, it sold Premium at €59.99 a year, €6.99 a month on the web and €4.99 a week in the apps. In March 2025, extra regions cost £3.99 and region bundles £8.99.

The cheapest way to pay. For most people, the World Pack. You pay once and get offline maps, voice navigation and device sync anywhere, with no renewal. Add Premium only if you need live tracking, multi-day planning or weather on route. Clubs and device makers sometimes hand out Premium trials: the British Mountaineering Council offered members 90 days free until January 2026.

Features that matter: routing, offline and device sync

Routing. Komoot’s main strength. It weighs surface, gradient and road type for each sport, and the surface breakdown is a lifesaver on a road bike.

Offline maps. Download a route, a region or, with Premium or the World Pack, a custom area. Be aware of the limits: offline, Komoot cannot reroute you, edit routes or run Live Tracking, so download the right route before you leave signal.

Device sync. Send routes to Garmin and other GPS devices, with live sync to Garmin and to Bosch’s Flow e-bike app on selected models. There is also an Apple Watch app.

Highlights. User-recommended spots, from viewpoints to cafés, pinned along routes. They are the social glue of Komoot and often the best part of a new area.

Privacy and safety

Komoot is now owned by Bending Spoons, the Italian company behind WeTransfer, Evernote and Meetup. After the deal in March 2025, BikeRadar reported that up to 85% of roughly 150 staff were let go, and that the founding team, including CEO Markus Hallermann, had left. Komoot itself would not confirm the scale.

The App Store privacy label says identifiers may be used to track you across other companies’ apps and websites, and lists health and fitness data, location, contacts and purchases among data linked to you. The Google Play listing says data is encrypted in transit and you can ask for it to be deleted.

On safety, Live Tracking (Premium) lets family follow your position, battery level and estimated arrival, but it needs a data connection. Routes follow mapped paths; they are not checked for conditions, so a bridleway that floods every winter will still appear.

What users say about Komoot

Komoot scores 4.7 out of 5 from 25,000 ratings on the UK App Store and 4.6 from about 425,000 reviews on Google Play. Trustpilot is split, at 3.7 from 2,029 reviews: 40% five-star and 30% one-star.

Fans praise the planner. On Trustpilot in September 2026, Tim T. from Great Britain wrote: “The interface is slick and quick to learn and use.” On Google Play in August 2026, Phillip S. called it “Easy to use App & plan routes, coupled with clear & accurate navigation most of the time.”

The complaints are about money and support. Dice M., on Google Play in August 2026: “I had to register with it before discovering you cannot use it without a paid subscription”. On Trustpilot in September 2026, Marco from Great Britain was blunter: “Support is diabolical and less than useless”.

How to get started with Komoot, and how to cancel

Getting started

  1. Download Komoot from the App Store or Google Play, or sign up at komoot.com.
  2. Choose your free region, ideally the area you ride or walk in most.
  3. Plan a route: pick your sport, set start and end points, and check surfaces and climbing.
  4. Save the route offline before you set off, and send it to your watch or bike computer if you use one.

Cancelling Premium

  1. Website: Account Settings, Premium, Cancel subscription.
  2. Android: cancel in the Google Play Store.
  3. iPhone: cancel in your Apple subscriptions.

Cancelling stops renewal and you keep Premium to the end of the paid period. Komoot says cancelling does not include a refund; that is a separate request. Map purchases are one-off and never renew.
