AllTrails is the hiking app most people meet first: type in a town, a national park or a hill, and it hands back a list of walks with distances, climbs, photos and a stream of recent reviews from people who were there last weekend. It now has more than 100 million members and about 500,000 routes worldwide.
We like it for two specific reasons. The reviews are the real currency, telling you that a stile is broken or a path is waterlogged before you set off, and AllTrails+ offline maps are cheap insurance on any walk where your signal might vanish. Here is our AllTrails review: what is free, what costs money, where it can lead you astray, and how it compares with Komoot and OS Maps.

Our verdict
AllTrails is the quickest way to find a decent walk somewhere you do not know, and the free version is good enough for well-trodden routes near a phone mast. AllTrails+ at £35.99 a year is fair value for anyone who walks more than a handful of times a year, mainly for offline maps and wrong-turn alerts. Peak, at more than twice the price, is for keen planners who want custom routes and the AI extras. In Britain, treat it as a finder and a second opinion, not as your only map in the hills.
Pros
- Huge library of routes, each with recent reviews, photos and conditions notes
- Free version lets you follow and record a route while you have signal
- AllTrails+ offline maps cover a single trail, a whole park or a custom area
- Wrong-turn alerts and live location sharing on paid plans
- Sends routes to Garmin and COROS watches and syncs activities back
- Same £35.99 price as an annual OS Maps subscription
Cons
- No offline maps on the free plan
- Some user-added routes are poorly checked; a 2023 Lake District rescue began with one
- Activity is public by default until you change your privacy settings
- Peak costs £79.99 a year, a steep jump from Plus
- Trustpilot reviews are harsh, mostly about support and trial billing
- Thinner coverage of Britain’s rights of way than Ordnance Survey mapping
What AllTrails does and who it is for
AllTrails is a searchable library of walks, runs and rides. Each listing shows distance, climb, estimated time, difficulty and recent reviews, and filters find dog-friendly walks, wheelchair-friendly paths or short loops.
It suits people who walk for pleasure rather than serious mountaineers. Three moments where it earns its place:
- You are in Ambleside on a wet Saturday and the planned ridge walk looks grim. Filter for shorter, lower routes, read who walked them yesterday and pick a valley loop with a café at the end.
- A city break in Lisbon leaves a free afternoon. Search the coast near Cascais and you will find a few well-reviewed clifftop walks, with photos showing whether the path is a promenade or a scramble.
- You are taking your parents to the Peak District and need something gentle. The difficulty grades and reviews mentioning steps or stiles narrow it down in minutes.
Is AllTrails free? Free vs paid features
Yes, the core app is free. Without paying you can search trails, read reviews and photos, save routes to lists, follow a route on the map and record your walk, as long as you have a phone signal. You can also add new trails and share them.
What the free tier lacks matters most on the hill: there are no offline maps, so in a valley with no coverage the map tiles may not load. AllTrails+ adds:
- Offline maps for a trail, a park or a custom area
- Wrong-turn alerts when you leave a route in Navigate mode
- Live share, so family can follow your position in real time
- 3D terrain previews and printable maps
- Trail conditions: temperature, rain, snow depth, air quality and mosquito alerts
- Sending routes to Garmin and COROS watches
- An ad-free app
Peak includes everything in Plus, then adds Custom Routes with smart routing (make a trail shorter, less steep or more scenic), a Community Heatmap of trail traffic, advanced map layers, a route assistant for multi-day trips and Outdoor Lens, which identifies plants and insects through your camera.
AllTrails price: plans and the cheapest way to pay
Both paid tiers are sold as annual subscriptions. These are the UK App Store prices; dollar and euro figures are straight conversions for comparison.
| Plan | UK price | US$ equivalent | € equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Free | Free | Free |
| AllTrails+ (Plus) | £35.99 a year | $47.96 | €42.71 |
| AllTrails Peak | £79.99 a year | $106.59 | €94.92 |
In the US, Plus is $35.99 and Peak $79.99 a year.
The cheapest way to pay. Start the 7-day trial in a week you will actually walk. There is no student or family plan and no public promo code, but AllTrails runs seasonal sales: in summer 2025, 50% off annual AllTrails+ in several countries cut the UK price to £17.99.
Features that matter: offline maps, alerts and watch apps
Offline maps. The main reason to pay. Download a single route before you leave the car park, or a whole national park before a week away. AllTrails says members have downloaded 185 million maps.
Wrong-turn alerts. Your phone buzzes when you stray from the loaded route. Handy in woodland where paths fork every few hundred metres.
Watches. There is an Apple Watch app, and paid members can send routes to Garmin and COROS watches and sync recorded walks back.
Live share. Lets someone at home follow your dot on the map, but it needs data, so it is no substitute for a satellite messenger.
Reviews and photos. Free, and arguably the best feature: a fresh review beats any elevation chart.
Is AllTrails safe? Accuracy, privacy and the small print
Most AllTrails routes are fine, but some are added by users and checked loosely. In January 2023, Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to three walkers and a dog stuck on steep scree on Barf Fell, near Bassenthwaite, after an AllTrails route sent them down a slope with no path, as reported by T3. AllTrails said it reviewed the trail, updated the map and worked with mountain rescue on safer suggestions. On British hills, carry a proper map and compass and check a route against Ordnance Survey mapping before you commit.
On privacy, AllTrails activity is public by default. In March 2023, Motherboard reported that a former senior Biden administration official’s public AllTrails activity showed his movements around Washington. AllTrails said users choose who can see their content. If that matters to you, set your profile to followers only or private under Privacy settings. The App Store privacy label lists location, contact details, contacts, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as data linked to you.
What users say about AllTrails
AllTrails scores 4.8 out of 5 from 66,000 ratings on the UK App Store and 4.5 from about 385,000 reviews on Google Play. Trustpilot is far harsher at 1.3 from 239 reviews, with 81% at one star, though most complaints there concern billing and support rather than the trails.
On Google Play in July 2026, Stew O. gave it five stars “because it has given myself so much to explore without having to plan it all”. Molly, also on Google Play that month, was less happy: “I used to like because of its clean map view. but it’s getting worse.”
On Trustpilot, PeterW from Great Britain summed up a common view in September 2026: “The app itself is very good, but not support.” Joanna M., in August 2026, warned: “Do not try the free week tryout, its a way to get money off you…”
