Mullvad VPN Promo Code? There Isn’t One: €5 a Month Flat, No Email Needed and a 14-Day Refund

Key facts

  • Price from: US$5.61 a month (£4.21 / €5.00); US$5.05 a month (£3.79 / €4.50) paying in crypto
  • Renewal price: the same €5 a month
  • Money-back: 14 days, for some payment methods
  • Free plan or trial: none
  • Devices: 5 at once
  • Servers and countries: 566 servers in 91 cities across 50 countries
  • Streaming: not marketed for streaming; independent results are mixed
  • No-logs: no activity logs; apps and web services independently audited; a 2023 police search found no customer data
  • Jurisdiction: Sweden (Mullvad VPN AB, Gothenburg)
  • Trustpilot: 3.4/5 from 186 reviews (unclaimed profile)

Verdict: Mullvad is the VPN for people who would rather not be a customer record at all. You get a 16-digit account number instead of a login, a price that has not moved since 2009 and some of the most thoughtful privacy engineering on the market. What you do not get is a big server list, reliable streaming or the long-plan discounts that make rivals look cheaper on paper.

Pros

  • One flat price with no renewal increase, ever
  • No email, name or phone number needed; cash accepted by post
  • Strong privacy record, including a police visit that left empty-handed
  • Modern features: quantum-resistant tunnels, multihop, DAITA, DNS content blockers
  • Regular independent audits, published in full

Cons

  • No free plan, no free trial and only a 14-day refund window
  • Crypto and cash payments cannot be refunded
  • 50 countries is modest next to Proton VPN and NordVPN
  • Not built for streaming; Netflix and iPlayer results are inconsistent
  • Five devices, where most rivals now allow ten

Mullvad promo codes, coupons and discounts: what actually works

Search “Mullvad promo code” and you will find coupon sites promising percentages off. Mullvad’s own pricing page answers the question of sales with a single word: “Nope.” There is no code box at checkout because there is nothing to enter. Codes circulating on coupon sites do not change the price you pay Mullvad directly.

The one genuine saving is a 10% discount for paying in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash or Monero. Mullvad also sells voucher cards through resellers, and its pricing page notes that resellers may use different price models, so a voucher can occasionally work out cheaper. Check the reseller’s own terms before buying.

A worked example makes the trade-off clear. Twelve months paid by card costs US$67.32 (£50.52 / €60.00). The same year paid in crypto costs US$60.59 (£45.47 / €54.00), a saving of US$6.73 (£5.05 / €6.00). In year two the price is identical, because there is no introductory rate to expire. The catch: Mullvad does not refund crypto payments, so the discount only makes sense once you know the service suits you.

To pay, you generate an account number on the website or in the app, choose how many months to add (one month, a year or, if you are feeling optimistic, a decade at €600) and pick a payment method. Time is simply added to the account.

Free trial, free plan and the 14-day money-back guarantee

Mullvad has no free plan and no free trial on any platform. The cheapest way to try it is to buy a single month for US$5.61 (£4.21 / €5.00), which is less than a cinema ticket in most European cities.

If it does not suit you, Mullvad offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, but only for some payment methods. To claim a refund:

  1. Find your 16-digit account number in the app or on your account page.
  2. Find your payment reference. For a card, it is the token on your bank statement, usually in the form VPN*xxxxxxxxxx. For PayPal, it is the Invoice ID (not the transaction ID). For Google Play, it is the Order ID beginning “GPA”.
  3. Email support@mullvadvpn.net with the account number and payment reference, within 14 days of paying.
  4. For a SEPA bank wire, include the payment date, your name, IBAN or account number and BIC. The money goes back to the account it came from.
  5. For an App Store purchase, request the refund from Apple instead.

Cash cannot be refunded because of anti-money laundering rules, and cryptocurrency and voucher payments are not refundable through Mullvad either.

Mullvad prices and plans in three currencies

There is one plan. The term only decides how much time you add.

Prices are set in euros and include VAT; the dollar and sterling figures are Mullvad’s own approximations, so your bank’s exchange rate may differ slightly. Payment options are unusually broad: cards, PayPal, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, bank wire, Swish, Bancontact, iDEAL, Eps, Przelewy24 and cash sent by post.

Server locations, countries and streaming with Mullvad

Mullvad’s live server list shows 566 servers in 91 cities across 50 countries, run with 14 hosting providers. Coverage is strongest in Europe and North America. Key countries include the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Israel and Turkey. There are newer additions such as Nigeria, Peru, Indonesia and the Philippines, but nothing in much of the Middle East or Central Asia.

Since January 2026 the network runs on WireGuard only, after Mullvad retired OpenVPN. For networks that block VPN traffic there are bridge options (Shadowsocks and UDP-over-TCP).

Streaming is not part of the pitch, and Mullvad does not tune servers for it. Expert Reviews reached US Netflix through New York and BBC iPlayer through London. Security.org found Netflix and Disney+ worked on some attempts and were blocked on others. We have found no verified reports either way for sport streaming services, so treat Mullvad as a privacy tool that sometimes streams rather than the other way round.

Speeds are respectable. On a 94.6Mbps line, Security.org recorded 92.4Mbps through New York, 84.7Mbps through Japan and 71.2Mbps through South Africa. Expert Reviews measured about 354Mbps through London on a line of roughly 367Mbps.

Is Mullvad safe? Privacy, audits and its track record

Mullvad says it stores no activity logs of any kind, and its account system means there is little to log in the first place. Accounts are a randomly generated 16-digit number with no email address or personal details attached.

That claim was tested in April 2023, when officers from the Swedish police’s National Operations Department arrived at Mullvad’s Gothenburg office with a search warrant seeking computers holding customer data. After Mullvad explained how the service works, the police consulted the prosecutor and left without taking anything. Later that year, a French researcher reported Mullvad account numbers circulating online; the company said these were among accounts it donates to organisations and that they contain no personal information, which the researcher also confirmed.

Audits are a regular habit. Cure53 tested the desktop apps in 2018, and Swedish firm Assured tested the website, onion service and content system in 2025, finding no critical, high or medium-severity issues and one low-severity issue that was fixed. Mullvad says its apps on all five platforms have been externally audited. Mullvad VPN AB is based in Sweden and subject to Swedish law; its defence against any legal request is that it holds very little to hand over.

Two changes are worth knowing about. Port forwarding was removed in July 2023 after misuse, which disappointed some torrent users. And the feature list now includes quantum-resistant tunnels, multihop routing, DAITA (padding traffic to resist analysis), a kill switch, DNS content blockers and split tunnelling on everything except iOS. There is no dedicated IP, password manager or antivirus.

What Mullvad users say

Mullvad’s Trustpilot profile scores 3.4 out of 5 from 186 reviews. The profile is unclaimed and Mullvad does not invite reviews, so the sample is small and self-selecting: 62% of reviews give five stars and 20% give one.

The praise is consistent: anonymous accounts, the flat price and a sense that the company means what it says. “Mullvad has never failed me, it literally saves me and my workflow,” wrote Katrina B. from Sri Lanka.

The complaints cluster around speed at busy times, dropped connections, unhelpful support in restrictive countries and streaming abroad. “Mullvad is now so slow that it struggles even to load my email, let alone streaming services,” wrote Roy from the UK. A small number of recent reviewers also mention a co-founder’s political donation as their reason for leaving.

How to sign up for Mullvad and use it

  1. Go to the Mullvad website or download the app for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android.
  2. Tap “Generate account number” and write the 16-digit number down somewhere safe. It is your only login.
  3. Add time: choose a month, a year or longer, and pay by card, PayPal, crypto, bank transfer or cash.
  4. Sign in to the app with the number and connect to a country or city.
  5. In settings, switch on the DNS content blockers and, if you want extra protection, quantum-resistant tunnels or multihop.
  6. Use it on up to five devices at once; a household needing more will need a second account.

A real-life example: you are in a Lisbon hotel on a Champions League night, and the Wi-Fi network is shared by every guest on your floor. Connecting to Mullvad encrypts your traffic before it leaves your phone, so the hotel network sees only a connection to a Mullvad server. Getting your usual streaming service to play through a UK server is another matter, and on Mullvad it is not guaranteed.

On the way home, checking your bank balance on airport Wi-Fi is the more useful case. Banking apps already use encryption, but a VPN stops the network operator seeing which services you use, and it costs you nothing in convenience once the app is set to connect automatically on untrusted networks.

VPNs are legal in the UK. Using one to get around a streaming service’s terms, for example to watch another country’s catalogue, can lead to that account being restricted.

Mullvad vs Proton VPN vs NordVPN

Prices below are each brand’s official US-dollar prices, with Mullvad shown at its own euro rate. Proton VPN is compared on VPN Plus and NordVPN on Basic, the closest equivalents to Mullvad’s single plan.

On a two-year view, both rivals are cheaper per month than Mullvad if you pay upfront. After renewal the picture flips: Mullvad’s year costs US$67.32 (£50.52 / €60.00) against Proton’s US$83.88 and NordVPN’s US$139.08. NordVPN also takes our Promo Code LOCALS, covered in our NordVPN review.

Pick Mullvad if anonymity matters more than anything else and you dislike subscription games. Pick Proton VPN if you want a strong privacy record plus a free plan, more countries and better streaming support. Pick NordVPN if streaming, a large network and extras matter more than handing over an email address.

Mullvad FAQs

Does Mullvad have a promo code?
No. Mullvad does not run promo codes, coupons or sales, and its price is the same for everyone. The only official discount is 10% off for paying in cryptocurrency.

Does Mullvad have a free trial?
No, and there is no free plan either. The cheapest way to try it is one month for €5 (about US$5.61 or £4.21), backed by a 14-day refund for card, PayPal and some other payment methods.

Is Mullvad VPN safe?
It has one of the stronger privacy records among VPNs. It needs no personal details, publishes independent audits, and a Swedish police search in 2023 found no customer data to take.

How do I get a refund from Mullvad?
Email support@mullvadvpn.net within 14 days with your account number and the payment reference from your bank, PayPal or Google Play receipt. Crypto, cash and voucher payments are not refundable, and App Store purchases go through Apple.

Does Mullvad work with Netflix and BBC iPlayer?
Sometimes. Independent tests have reached US Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but others found services blocking the connection, and Mullvad does not optimise its servers for streaming.

Can I pay for Mullvad with cash?
Yes. You can post cash in several currencies, including sterling, euros and US dollars, with your account number. Cash payments cannot be refunded.

How many devices can I use with Mullvad?
Five at the same time on one account. A household needing more would need a second account at another €5 a month.

Is Mullvad better than Proton VPN?
For anonymity and simple pricing, Mullvad has the edge. Proton VPN offers a free plan, ten devices, far more countries and longer refunds, so it suits more people overall.
