Verdict

Windscribe is the most generous free VPN on the market for anyone who needs more than one device, and its Build a Plan option is a genuinely different way to buy a VPN: pick two or three countries, pay a few dollars, ignore the rest. The trade-offs are a smaller network than the big names, a stingy 7-day refund window and a Canadian base that some privacy purists dislike. For light users and people on a budget, it is hard to beat.

Pros

  • 10GB a month free, with no device limit and no card details
  • Build a Plan lets you pay US$1 per country, from US$3 a month
  • No price jump on renewal for the yearly Pro plan
  • Open-source apps, independent audits and a no-logs claim that held up in court
  • Accepts cards, PayPal and cryptocurrency

Cons

  • Refunds limited to 7 days and under 10GB of use
  • Fewer countries than Proton VPN or Surfshark
  • No multi-year plan, so the cheapest long-term price is higher than rivals’ two-year deals
  • Free plan drops to 2GB if you skip email confirmation
  • Some users say the refund and data terms were not clear before they paid

Windscribe promo codes, coupons and discounts: what actually works

The first thing to understand about Windscribe discounts is that the biggest one is printed on the pricing page. Pro costs US$9 a month (£6.75 / €8.02) on monthly billing, or US$69 (£51.78 / €61.45) for a year. Twelve monthly payments would come to US$108 (£81.04 / €96.18), so the yearly plan saves US$39 (£29.27 / €34.73), roughly 36 per cent.

Unlike most rivals, Windscribe does not lure you in with a cut-price first term and then double the bill. The yearly plan renews at US$69, which makes the headline price the real price.

Windscribe also runs seasonal codes through its own blog: a Back to School sale, a Halloween sale and Black Friday deals. Its promo codes page on the blog is the place to check for the current one. Other codes circulate on coupon sites; most are expired or apply to old promotions, so treat them with caution.

To apply a code, go to the Windscribe upgrade page while logged in, choose your plan, click “Have a promo code?”, type it in and check that the total changes before you pay.

Worked example. A UK reader who wants Pro for a year pays US$69 (£51.78 / €61.45) billed upfront, against US$108 (£81.04 / €96.18) on monthly billing.

There are also free extras. Free users can add 5GB to their monthly allowance permanently by posting about Windscribe on X, and the referral programme pays out in extra data and, eventually, a free Pro account.

Windscribe free plan, free trial and the money-back guarantee

The free plan is where Windscribe made its name, and it remains the main reason to look at it. Confirm your email address and you get 10GB a month; skip that step, or unsubscribe from promotional emails, and the allowance drops to 2GB. You can use servers in 10 countries, including the US, Canada and the UK, on as many devices as you like.

That last point matters. Proton VPN’s free plan has no data cap but limits you to one device; Windscribe caps your data but lets the whole household share it. Ten gigabytes is plenty for email, banking and browsing on holiday, and roughly an evening or two of HD streaming.

There is no free trial of Pro. Windscribe calls itself “freemium” and points people towards the free tier instead, which is a reasonable way to try the apps before paying. Its refund policy is far tighter than the 30 days most rivals offer:

  1. Make sure you are within 7 days of your first payment. Renewals are not refundable.
  2. Check your usage in your account. You must have used less than 10GB on the paid plan.
  3. Try the troubleshooting first: Windscribe asks you to talk to Garry, its support chatbot, or check the knowledge base.
  4. Ask Garry to open a ticket, or submit one through the contact support page, requesting a refund.
  5. Wait for a reply by email, and keep your order details to hand.

If you switch between plans, Windscribe cancels the old subscription and refunds the unused days, but you can only make changes twice in any 30-day period.

Windscribe prices and plans: Pro, Build a Plan and the free tier

Build a Plan is the clever bit. You pick individual locations at US$1 (£0.75 / €0.89) each a month, with a minimum of US$3 (£2.25 / €2.67). Each location adds 10GB to your monthly allowance, and for another US$1 a month you can add unlimited data and R.O.B.E.R.T., Windscribe’s ad and tracker blocker. You can swap locations during the month at no extra cost.

The arithmetic is simple. Someone who wants a UK server for iPlayer while abroad, a US server and one more European country pays US$4 a month with unlimited data, or US$48 (£36.02 / €42.75) over a year, against US$69 for Pro. Add more than a handful of countries and Pro becomes the better buy. Static IPs and ScribeForce team accounts (US$5 per user a month, minimum five users) are sold separately.

You can pay by card, PayPal, cryptocurrency or local payment methods, and Windscribe also supports paying in cash.

Servers, countries and streaming with Windscribe

Windscribe says it runs servers in 69 countries and more than 130 locations, with 45 locations in the US, nine in Canada and six in the UK. It is smaller than Proton VPN (140+ countries) or Surfshark (100 countries), though it covers the places most travellers need: North America, the UK, most of Europe and the larger Asian hubs.

Protocols include WireGuard, OpenVPN (UDP and TCP), IKEv2, and two obfuscated options, Stealth and WStunnel, designed for networks that block VPN traffic. Encryption is AES-256-GCM or ChaCha20.

On streaming, Windscribe’s own page names Netflix (with the US library as its example), BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN and DAZN. In TechRadar’s tests, even the free plan reached Netflix in the UK, US and Canada, plus iPlayer, ITV and Channel 4, though YouTube US failed. Streaming in HD will chew through 10GB quickly, so serious viewers need a paid plan.

Speeds are respectable. TechRadar measured about 1,594 Mbps on the free plan with WireGuard and about 2,263 Mbps on the paid plan, far faster than most home broadband connections.

Windscribe privacy and security: logs, audits and the Greek case

Windscribe states that it keeps no identifying logs, publishes a transparency report, and open-sources its desktop and mobile apps. It has not commissioned a standalone no-logs audit. Instead, Leviathan Security Group audited its desktop app in September 2021 and its Android and iOS apps in March 2022, and Packetlabs reviewed its server stack in June 2024. Windscribe says the issues raised were fixed.

The most useful evidence came from a courtroom. In 2023 Greek authorities charged chief executive Yegor Sak after someone allegedly used a Windscribe server in Finland to attack a Greek website. In April 2025 an Athens court dismissed the case for lack of evidence, with Windscribe arguing throughout that it had no logs to hand over.

There is one blemish. In June 2021 two Windscribe servers in Ukraine were seized by local authorities. They held an OpenVPN certificate and private key and were running an older, unencrypted server setup. Windscribe said user traffic was not logged, replaced its certificate system, stopped storing keys on disk and moved its servers to run in memory.

The company is based in Toronto, which puts it under Canadian law and inside the Five Eyes intelligence alliance. For most people that matters less than whether logs exist at all, which is where the Greek case is reassuring.

What Windscribe users say

On Trustpilot, Windscribe scores 4.7 out of 5 from more than 13,300 reviews. The praise centres on ease of use, stable connections, the ad and tracker blocking, and Garry, the support chatbot, which gets regular credit for walking people through set-up.

“Fastest VPN I have used, low monthly rates from $3,” wrote Joseph D. in the US, neatly summarising the Build a Plan appeal. “Works great, very easy to connect,” added Spalders in the UK.

The complaints are more specific than angry. Several reviewers say the refund limits in the terms were not obvious before they paid, and a few felt “unlimited” claims or recurring charges were not explained clearly. Windscribe replies to just under a third of negative reviews.

How to sign up for Windscribe and use it

  1. Download the Windscribe app for your device, or install the browser extension.
  2. Create an account with a username and password. Add and confirm an email address to get 10GB instead of 2GB.
  3. To upgrade, go to the upgrade page, choose Pro or Build a Plan, enter any promo code in the “Have a promo code?” box and pay.
  4. Open the app, pick a location and tap connect. Turn on the firewall (Windscribe’s kill switch) in settings.
  5. Switch on R.O.B.E.R.T. if your plan includes it, to block ads and trackers.

Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android (including Android TV), Apple TV, Fire TV and Huawei, plus Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions and router set-ups. With no device limit, a family can put it on every phone, laptop and television in the house.

Two real-life examples. Say you are in a Lisbon hotel for a Champions League night and the UK subscription you already pay for will not play abroad: connect to a UK server, sign in as normal and watch. A Build a Plan customer with just the UK selected pays a few dollars for exactly that. Or you are checking your bank balance on airport Wi-Fi before a flight: connect to any free location, and your traffic is encrypted between your phone and Windscribe’s server, which is all most people need on a network they do not control.

On price alone, Windscribe loses the long game. Surfshark and Proton VPN both undercut its yearly plan, and both offer two-year deals it does not. What Windscribe wins on is honesty and flexibility: its renewal price is the same as its first-year price, and Build a Plan has no real equivalent at either rival.

Pick Windscribe if you want a free VPN for several devices, or you only need two or three countries and would rather not pay for 100. Pick Proton VPN if you want a free plan with no data cap on a single device, or the strongest privacy credentials (it is based in Switzerland). Pick Surfshark if you want the lowest long-term price, a big network and unlimited devices, and you are happy to lock in for two years.

Windscribe FAQs

Is there a Windscribe promo code that works right now?
Windscribe runs seasonal sales, including one for Halloween, and lists current codes on its blog. Without a code, the yearly plan already saves US$39 on monthly billing. Codes on coupon sites are often expired.

Is Windscribe really free?
Yes. The free plan gives 10GB a month with a confirmed email (2GB without) and access to 10 countries, with no card details required and no device limit. You can add 5GB a month by posting about Windscribe on X.

Does Windscribe have a free trial?
Not of Pro. Windscribe points new users to its free plan instead, which uses the same apps and protocols, with fewer locations and a data cap.

Can I get a refund from Windscribe?
Only within 7 days of your first payment, and only if you have used less than 10GB on the paid plan. Renewals are not refundable. Ask Garry, the support chatbot, to open a ticket, or submit one through the contact support page.

How does Windscribe Build a Plan work?
You pay US$1 a month for each location you choose, with a US$3 minimum. Each location adds 10GB a month, or you can pay an extra US$1 for unlimited data plus the R.O.B.E.R.T. blocker. You can change locations during the month.

Is Windscribe safe to use?
It has independent audits of its apps and servers, open-source clients and a no-logs claim that survived a Greek court case in 2025. It did have two servers seized in Ukraine in 2021, after which it overhauled its server security.

Does Windscribe work with Netflix and BBC iPlayer?
Windscribe lists both on its streaming page, and independent testers have reached Netflix in the UK, US and Canada, as well as iPlayer, even on the free plan. Streaming services change their blocks regularly, so results can vary.

Windscribe or Proton VPN: which free VPN is better?
Proton VPN’s free plan has no data limit but works on one device at a time and does not support streaming. Windscribe caps data at 10GB but lets you use as many devices as you like. Heavy users on one laptop should choose Proton; households and travellers who need several devices should choose Windscribe.

VPNs are legal to use in the UK. Using one to get around a streaming service’s terms, such as watching a catalogue from another country, may breach those terms and can lead to an account being restricted.
