IPVanish has been around since 2012, which in VPN years makes it something of an elder statesman. It is quick, it lets you connect as many devices as you own, and the two-year deal is cheap; the catch is a renewal price that jumps sharply, and a US base that privacy purists will not love.

Verdict
IPVanish is a capable, quick VPN with a generous attitude to devices and a low price for the first two years. It is not the strongest choice for streaming or for anyone who wants their VPN based outside the US, and the renewal bill needs to be in your diary. Bought with eyes open, it is good value; left on auto-renew, rather less so.
Pros
- Unlimited devices on a single subscription
- Fast WireGuard speeds in independent testing
- Two independent no-logs audits, the most recent in 2025
- P2P allowed on every server, plus a SOCKS5 proxy
- Threat Protection blocks ads, trackers and some malware sites
Cons
- Renewal price is roughly three times the first-term rate
- Based in the US, a Five Eyes country, with a 2016 logging case under previous owners
- BBC iPlayer access is patchy
- No refund on monthly plans or renewals
- No crypto payments and no dedicated IP option
IPVanish promo codes, coupons and discounts: what actually works
IPVanish’s discount is applied on its own pricing page. Choose the Essential plan on a two-year term and the reduced price appears without any code. The “up to 83%” saving is measured against the US$12.99 monthly price (£9.75 / €11.57). You will find codes circulating on coupon sites, but we could not confirm any of them on IPVanish’s own site, and none appeared to beat the listed price.
A worked example shows what the deal is really worth. Paying monthly for two years would cost US$311.76 (£233.94 / €277.65). The Essential 2-year plan costs US$52.56 (£39.44 / €46.81) up front, a saving of US$259.20 (£194.50 / €230.84). Then comes the sting: at renewal the plan rolls on at US$89.99 a year (£67.53 / €80.15), or about US$7.50 a month (£5.63 / €6.68).
To apply the offer, open the pricing page, choose the plan and term, enter your email address and pay. Set a calendar reminder a few weeks before the renewal date; it is the cheapest piece of financial planning you will ever do.
Free trial, free plan and the 30-day refund
There is no free IPVanish plan. The nearest thing is a 7-day free trial, available only when you subscribe through the IPVanish app on iPhone or Android. Your Apple or Google account needs a payment method on file, and if you do not cancel within the week, the store bills you for a year.
To cancel the trial on an iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, IPVanish and Cancel Free Trial. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, IPVanish and Cancel.
The 30-day money-back guarantee is the more useful safety net, and it works on any device. It applies to 1-year and 2-year plans bought on the IPVanish website. Monthly plans and renewals are not refundable, and app store purchases follow Apple’s or Google’s own refund rules.
How to claim a refund, step by step:
- Log in to your account on the IPVanish website.
- Go to My Account, then Subscriptions, then Change Plan.
- Select Cancel subscription.
- Choose a reason for cancelling; the confirmation button only appears once you do.
- Click Proceed with cancellation and decline any retention offer.
- Keep the confirmation email. If the refund does not appear on your statement, contact live chat.
IPVanish prices and plans compared: Essential v Advanced
IPVanish sells two main tiers. Essential covers the VPN, Threat Protection and the core privacy tools. Advanced adds a Secure Browser, 1TB of encrypted cloud backup with file sync, and phone support.

IPVanish changes its prices often, and the checkout shows the exact total and renewal amount before you pay.
IPVanish charges in US dollars, so a UK or eurozone card will show a converted figure on the statement. You can pay by credit or debit card, PayPal or Google Pay. Cryptocurrency is no longer accepted, which will disappoint the small but vocal crowd that likes to pay for privacy in bitcoin.
For most people, Essential is enough. Advanced makes sense only if you were going to pay for cloud storage anyway.
Servers, countries and streaming: where IPVanish can take you
IPVanish runs more than 3,200 servers across about 150 locations. It owns its server network rather than renting it, and more than 1,000 of those servers are in the US. A gradual move to RAM-only servers, which wipe data on every reboot, is under way but covers only around 20 locations so far.
UK coverage is spread across a handful of locations, which is plenty for most people abroad who want their home services.
Streaming is decent rather than dazzling. Tom’s Guide found US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Japanese Netflix libraries worked in its March 2026 tests, and VPNOverview reported success with US, UK and Japanese Netflix in July 2026. BBC iPlayer is the weak spot: testers report that it works on some UK servers and not others, so expect to switch servers now and then. We could not verify reliable access to sports streaming services, so treat any claim on that front with caution.
Speed is where IPVanish earns its keep. On a 10Gbps test line, Tom’s Guide measured a median of 738Mbps on a nearby server using WireGuard, and 449Mbps from a US server. Those figures are far beyond what a typical home broadband connection can deliver, so in practice the VPN is unlikely to be the bottleneck. OpenVPN was markedly slower, at around 200Mbps.
Privacy and security: is IPVanish safe to use?
IPVanish says it keeps no logs of your browsing or connections. That claim has been checked twice by outside firms: Leviathan Security Group in 2022 and Schellman Compliance in early 2025, both of which found no retained connection or traffic logs. The full reports are available to subscribers rather than the public, which is less transparent than some rivals manage.
The history is more complicated. In 2016, under its previous owner Highwinds, IPVanish handed information about a customer to the US Department of Homeland Security during a criminal investigation, despite a privacy policy that said it kept no logs. The case became public in 2018. The company changed hands in 2017 and again in 2019, when it was bought by J2 Global, now Ziff Davis, and the current setup is the one the audits examined.
The company is based in New York, so it falls under US jurisdiction and the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement. Encryption is AES-256, and the apps offer WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, with IPSec on Apple devices. Extras include a kill switch, split tunnelling, Double Hop routing through two servers, an obfuscation option called OpenVPN Scramble, a link checker and Threat Protection, which blocks ads, trackers and some malicious sites.
What IPVanish users say on Trustpilot
IPVanish scores 4.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 10,273 reviews, with 78% giving it five stars and 6% one star. The praise centres on easy set-up, stable connections and helpful support staff.
The complaints follow a familiar pattern for subscription software: auto-renewal at a much higher price, refund requests turned down after the 30-day window, and cancellations that take more effort than they should. A smaller group report login and password reset trouble.
Both sides came through in recent reviews. Mark O. from the US gave four stars after a support agent “came to a generous agreement” on a lengthy ticket. BK, also in the US, gave one star: “This company auto renews at higher rates without warning or authorization.”
How to sign up for IPVanish and get it running
- Open the IPVanish pricing page and choose Essential or Advanced.
- Pick a term; the two-year plan gives the lowest monthly price.
- Enter your email address, pay by card, PayPal or Google Pay, and confirm your email.
- Download the app for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV.
- Log in, choose a server or tap Connect for the fastest one, and switch on the kill switch in settings.
Because there is no device limit, you can install it on your laptop, phone, tablet, the family TV stick and the teenager’s games console without doing any arithmetic. Routers are supported too, but only certain Asus models and DD-WRT firmware.
A real-life example: you are in a Lisbon hotel on a Champions League night, and the stream on your home subscription refuses to play because you are abroad. Connect to a UK server, refresh the app and, with luck, kick-off arrives on time. The next morning, waiting at the gate with an hour to kill and a bill to pay, switch the VPN on before logging into your banking app on the airport Wi-Fi. Your traffic is encrypted between your phone and the VPN server, so whoever else is on that network sees only scrambled data.
IPVanish vs Private Internet Access vs Surfshark
| IPVanish | Private Internet Access | Surfshark | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparable plan | Essential, 2 years | 3 years + 3 months | Starter, 2 years + 3 months |
| Price a month | US$2.19 (£1.64 / €1.95) | US$2.03 (£1.52 / €1.81) | US$2.49 (£1.87 / €2.22) |
| Billed for first term | US$52.56 (£39.44 / €46.81) for 24 months | about US$79 (£59.28 / €70.36) for 39 months | US$67.23 (£50.45 / €59.88) for 27 months |
| Renewal | US$89.99 a year (£67.53 / €80.15) | US$79 every three years (£59.28 / €70.36) | US$79 a year (£59.28 / €70.36) |

| Free option | 7-day trial via mobile app stores | no free plan | 7-day trial via mobile app stores |
| Money-back | 30 days (not monthly plans) | 30 days, new subscribers | 30 days |
Surfshark also has a Promo Code, SHARKGIFT, for its 2-year plan, which is listed from US$2.49 a month (£1.87 / €2.22).
On price alone, Private Internet Access is the long-haul winner: its plan page says the three-year plan renews at the same US$79, which makes IPVanish’s renewal look steep. PIA also suits tinkerers, with more settings to fiddle with. Surfshark is the better all-rounder for streaming and extras, and with a Promo Code it undercuts IPVanish on the first term.
IPVanish makes most sense for people who value raw speed and torrenting, and who will either switch provider or haggle when renewal comes round. If you want a VPN you can set up once and forget for years, PIA’s renewal terms are kinder.
IPVanish FAQs
Is there an IPVanish promo code that works?
The best deal we could confirm is the discount shown on IPVanish’s own pricing page, which needs no code. Codes circulating on coupon sites did not beat it in our checks.
Does IPVanish have a free trial?
Yes, but only through the iOS and Android apps. It lasts seven days, needs a payment method on your Apple or Google account, and turns into a paid annual plan unless you cancel. On other devices, the 30-day money-back guarantee does the same job.
How do I get a full refund from IPVanish?
Cancel within 30 days of buying a 1-year or 2-year plan on the website, via My Account, Subscriptions, Change Plan and Cancel subscription. Refunds are processed automatically. Monthly plans, renewals and app store purchases are not covered by IPVanish’s guarantee.
Is IPVanish safe?
Its no-logs policy has passed two independent audits, in 2022 and 2025, and it uses standard AES-256 encryption with WireGuard. The 2016 data handover under previous owners and its US base are the main reservations. For everyday privacy on public Wi-Fi it does the job.
Does IPVanish work with Netflix and BBC iPlayer?
Independent testers in 2026 found US, UK and Japanese Netflix libraries working. BBC iPlayer is less reliable and may need a few server switches. Streaming services change their blocking regularly, so results can vary from week to week.
How many devices can I use with IPVanish?
As many as you like. Every plan allows unlimited simultaneous connections, so one subscription can cover a whole household.
Who owns IPVanish?
Ziff Davis, the US media and internet company, owns IPVanish through its cybersecurity arm. It bought the service in 2019, when the parent company was still called J2 Global.
What happens when my IPVanish plan renews?
Your plan renews automatically at the standard rate, which for Essential is US$89.99 a year (£67.53 / €80.15). Turn off auto-renew in your account if you would rather decide at the time.
A note on the law: VPNs are legal in the UK. Using one to get round a streaming service’s regional restrictions can break that service’s terms of use, and it may restrict your account.
