HER has spent more than a decade as the best-known app built specifically for lesbian, bisexual and queer women, non-binary and trans people. It is free to join, Premium starts at £13.99 on the UK App Store, and since May 2025 it has belonged to Match Group, the company behind Tinder and Hinge. Here is what you get for nothing, what paying adds, and how it stacks up against Bumble and Hinge.
Promo Code: none needed. HER does not publish promo codes, and we found no official student discount. The real saving is the plan length: on HER’s US price list, the 12-month plan works out at $7.50 a month (about £5.63) against $14.99 for a single month.

Verdict
HER does something the big mainstream apps still struggle with: it assumes from the first screen that you are queer, and builds everything around that. Pronouns, gender identity and orientation sit at the top of a profile rather than buried in settings, and the Pride Pins let you say more about yourself (QPOC, T4T, masc lesbian and more) without writing an essay. The community spaces mean it works for friendship as well as romance, which is genuinely useful if you have just moved to a new city.
The weaknesses are familiar ones. The free version caps how much you can swipe, the price list is confusing, and Trustpilot reviewers complain loudly about fake profiles and slow support. The Match Group takeover has also prompted questions about data, given how sensitive this information is for users who are not out. It remains the most focused option for queer women in the UK; whether Premium is worth paying for depends on how busy your local area is.
Pros
- Built for lesbian, bisexual and queer women, non-binary and trans people, not added on as a filter
- Core dating and community features are free, and HER says they will stay free
- Detailed identity options, from pronouns to Pride Pins
- Communities and events make it useful for friendships, not just dating
- Longer plans bring the monthly cost down sharply
Cons
- Free accounts face a daily swipe limit
- Confusing price list, with several Platinum options at different prices
- Trustpilot reviewers report fake accounts and automated support replies
- Verification depends on linking a social media account, which not everyone wants to do
- Smaller user base than Bumble or Hinge outside big cities
Free vs paid: what HER gives you without spending a penny
HER’s own site is clear that its core features “will remain free”. Without paying you can build a profile, view other profiles, swipe and match, start chats, add friends, browse events and join communities. The app lists more than 30 community groups, built around shared interests, identities and places.
What the free version does not give you is volume. HER limits daily swipes for free users but does not publish the exact number; an App Store reviewer in 2022 put the cap at “maybe what, 25 swipes” a day. You also see ads and cannot see who has already liked you.
HER Premium adds, according to the company:
- Unlimited swipes
- See who liked you and who viewed your profile
- Incognito mode, so you browse without being seen until you choose
- Rewind for accidental left swipes
- Extra filters, including filtering by sexuality
- Real-time “online now” status
- No ads
HER Platinum also appears in the UK App Store’s in-app purchase list, priced above Premium, but neither HER’s public pages nor its store listings set out what it adds, so check the in-app comparison before choosing it over Premium.
HER Premium prices in the UK, and the cheapest way to pay
HER sells subscriptions through the App Store and Google Play, and says prices vary by region and may change. The UK App Store lists HER Premium at £13.99 and a range of HER Platinum options from £15.99 to £24.99. Apple does not label each product with its length, so we have added HER’s US plan structure for comparison.
| Plan | UK price (£) | US$ equivalent | € equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | £13.99 | $18.64 | €16.60 | UK App Store listing; plan length not labelled |
| Premium, 1 month (US list) | £11.25 | $14.99 | €13.35 | HER’s stated US starting price |
| Premium, 6 months | Not published | $60.00 (US list) | €53.44 | UK price shown in the app before you pay |
| Premium, 12 months | Not published | $90.00 (US list) | €80.15 | UK price shown in the app before you pay |
| Platinum | £15.99 to £24.99 | $21.31 to $33.30 | €18.98 to €29.66 | UK App Store; plan lengths not labelled |
| 1 week | Not offered | No weekly plan found |
Conversions use 1 GBP = 1.3326 USD = 1.1867 EUR and 1 USD = 0.7504 GBP = 0.8906 EUR. Like most dating apps, prices can differ by age and by platform, so check what your own app shows before buying.
The cheapest way to pay is to try the free version first, then commit to a longer plan if you know you will stay. On the US list, a year of Premium costs half as much per month as a single month. Neither the UK App Store nor the Google Play listing mentions a free trial.
HER discounts, promo codes and student deals: what exists and what doesn’t
There are no official HER promo codes. Sites advertising them are generally recycling generic coupon pages, and HER’s own pages mention none. We also found no student discount, no NUS or UNiDAYS deal, and no reduced rate for younger users. The only real saving is choosing a longer plan. Occasionally an app will show an in-app sale price to returning users, but HER does not advertise one publicly.
Who owns HER and who uses it
HER was founded by Robyn Exton, a British entrepreneur, who first launched a test app called Dattch in 2013. With $1 million in new funding it rebranded as HER in 2015, launching in the UK and US, and went on to add community features, live events in more than 25 cities, and versions in French, German, Spanish and Japanese.
In May 2025 Match Group announced it had bought HER, with financial terms undisclosed. Exton stayed on, describing HER as “the largest sapphic platform in the world” and saying the move would let it “launch new features faster”. Match Group also owns Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid. HER’s privacy policy names the operating company as Bloomer Inc., doing business as HER, with an office in San Francisco.
HER says it has more than 15 million users (the App Store description says 13 million), and over 300 million matches by 2023. Its site gives availability as both “more than 114 countries” and “125+ countries”. The app is 18+. HER does not publish an age breakdown or figures by city, so how busy it feels will depend on where you live.
Features that matter on HER
Matching. HER uses a familiar swipe system: like or pass, and a match opens a chat. A separate Discover area surfaces people who have liked you, which is one of the main reasons people pay.
Profiles and Pride Pins. Profiles carry pronouns, gender identity, sexual orientation and lifestyle details such as whether someone is sober, religious or wants children, plus a love language. Pride Pins add identity tags, and Political Pride Pins let you filter by social issues.
Communities and events. This is where HER differs most from Bumble and Hinge. A new arrival in London can join local groups, find a queer book club or a Saturday walking group, and make friends before ever going on a date. The “Add Friend” button makes that explicit.
Filters and incognito. Premium unlocks extra filters, including sexuality, and incognito mode, which matters to anyone not out at work or at home.
Travel and location. Neither HER’s App Store nor its Google Play description lists a travel mode or in-app video calling.
Is HER safe? Verification, moderation and privacy
HER verifies profiles by linking them to an existing social media account, and lets you filter for verified profiles. A Trust and Safety team of moderators reviews reports, and you can flag profiles for scams, transphobia or fake celebrity accounts. The help centre includes a safety guide for meeting up.
You can sign up with a phone number, email, Apple ID, or a Facebook or Instagram account, according to the privacy policy (last updated 11 March 2025). Apple’s privacy labels, supplied by the developer, say HER collects data that may be linked to you, including location, contact details, user content and “sensitive info”, and that some data is used for tracking.
We found no regulator fines or publicly reported data breaches involving HER. The 2025 takeover has led some commentators to question what Match Group ownership means for user data, though HER’s privacy policy does not mention data sharing with Match Group. If you are not out, the sensible precautions are the same as anywhere: use incognito mode, keep identifying details out of photos, and think before linking social accounts.
What HER users say
On the UK App Store, HER scores 4.3 out of 5 from about 6,700 ratings. On Google Play in the UK it scores 3.3 from about 74,500 reviews, with more than 5 million downloads. Trustpilot is far harsher, at 1.3 out of 5 from 50 reviews, most of them about billing, account suspensions and support.
The positive side is easy to find. One UK App Store reviewer, Locketpocket26, wrote: “I met the love of my life through this app.”
The complaints are just as direct. Deanna B. from the US wrote on Trustpilot: “This app is filled with scammers and you are not required to have a verified profile.”
Both tend to be true at once: plenty of couples have met on HER, and plenty of users find the free tier stingy and the fake profiles tiresome.
How to sign up, build a good profile and cancel HER Premium
- Download HER from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign up with your phone number, email, Apple ID, Facebook or Instagram.
- Add your pronouns, gender identity and orientation, and choose any Pride Pins that fit.
- Upload a few clear, recent photos, including one where your face is easy to see.
- Verify your profile so others can find you through the verified filter.
- Write something specific. “Looking for someone to drag round Ancoats on a Sunday” gives a match in Manchester something to reply to; “love travel and food” does not.
- Join a couple of communities, even if you are mainly there to date. They make the app feel busier.
- To cancel on iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose HER and tap Cancel Subscription.
- To cancel on Android, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, go to Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, choose HER and cancel.
- Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies, not by HER.
HER vs Bumble vs Hinge
| HER | Bumble | Hinge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, with swipe limit | Yes | Yes |
| Premium from | £13.99 (Premium) | £9.99 for 7 days of Premium | £12.99 (Hinge+) |
| Best for | Queer women, non-binary and trans people; dating plus community | Mixed audience; separate BFF mode for making friends | Mixed audience looking for relationships; prompt-led profiles |
| Verification | Social media link | Photo verification | Selfie verification |
| Owner | Match Group | Bumble Inc. | Match Group |
Pick HER if you want an app where everyone shares a queer frame of reference and where friendship and events matter as much as dating. Pick Bumble if you want a bigger pool and its BFF mode for friends, accepting that queer users are a minority of a mixed audience. Pick Hinge if you want slower, conversation-led matching and are happy to use its gender and orientation settings on a mainstream app. Plenty of people run HER alongside one of the others.
