Bumble Review: 7 Days of Premium for £9.99, Free Video Calls and the End of Women-First

Bumble review: the free app vs Boost, Premium and Premium+, with UK prices, safety tools, BFF for friends and how it compares with Tinder and Hinge.

Bumble Review: 7 Days of Premium for £9.99, Free Video Calls and the End of Women-First

Bumble built its name on letting women make the first move, then quietly dropped the rule in 2026. What is left is a tidy, safety-minded dating app with a decent free version and a paywall that is easy to wander into. Here is what you actually get, and when paying makes sense.

Bumble Promo Code box

  • Offer: no promo code needed; the free app covers matching, chat and video calls
  • Promo Code: none needed. Bumble says it does not currently accept promo codes
  • Best real saving: buy a longer plan. Bumble says the longer the plan or the bigger the pack, the better the value
  • Who qualifies: anyone aged 18 or over

  • Premium from: £9.99 for 7 days of Bumble Premium (UK App Store); Boost add-ons from £2.49

Verdict

Bumble is a sound, well-policed dating app that works perfectly well for free, and better if you treat the paid tiers as short, targeted tools rather than a standing direct debit. A week of Premium before a trip, or to clear a queue of people who have already liked you, is good value. A rolling subscription for its own sake rarely is. Its reviews are split down the middle: decent on the App Store, bruising on Trustpilot, where unhappy subscribers gather.

Pros

  • Free version covers the essentials, including in-app voice and video calls
  • Strong safety toolkit: photo and ID verification, an explicit-image blur and AI scam detection
  • Travel Mode and Incognito are genuinely useful paid extras
  • Short 7-day Premium plans let you dip in without committing
  • BFF offers a separate, free route to making friends

Cons

  • Prices vary between users and are only shown in the app
  • No promo codes, free trial or student discount
  • Seeing who has liked you sits behind Premium
  • Trustpilot reviews are overwhelmingly negative, mostly about value for money
  • Paying users fell 16% year on year in mid-2026, which hints at a quieter pool in places

Bumble free vs paid: what you get without spending a penny

The free app is not a cut-down demo. You can build a profile with photos and prompts, swipe, match, message and move to a voice or video call without swapping numbers. Basic filters for age and distance are free, as are Snooze mode for a break, photo verification and the block, report and unmatch tools.

Since August 2026, either person can send the first message after a match, and matches now have 72 hours to start talking rather than 24. Bumble also nudges people away from one-word openers. Opening Moves, the 2024 feature that lets you set a question for matches to answer, is still a handy way to skip the “hey” stage.

What free users miss: unlimited likes, seeing who has already liked you, advanced filters, Incognito, Travel Mode, Backtrack (undoing an accidental left swipe), and the weekly SuperSwipes and Spotlights that come with the paid tiers. You can also buy SuperSwipes, Spotlights and Notes one at a time.

Bumble Premium price UK: Boost, Premium and Premium+ plans compared

Bumble sells three subscription tiers, each building on the last:

  • Boost: unlimited likes, 5 SuperSwipes and 1 Spotlight a week, extra time on matches, rematching with expired connections and unlimited Backtrack.
  • Premium: everything in Boost, plus see who liked you, advanced filters, Incognito mode and Travel Mode.
  • Premium+: everything in Premium, plus photo insights (which of your pictures people like most), fast-tracked likes, priority in feeds, and 2 Notes, 10 SuperSwipes and 2 Spotlights a week.

Bumble does not publish a price list. Its help centre says prices vary by tier, plan length and pack size, and the figures you see sit under Pay plan in the profile tab. The UK App Store lists these price points (prices in other currencies are conversions, not Bumble’s own prices):

PlanUK priceUS$€
Boost (various lengths)£2.49 to £10.99$3.32 to $14.65€2.95 to €13.04
Premium, 7 days£9.99$13.31€11.86
Premium, 7 days (higher listing)£24.99$33.30€29.66
Premium (other lengths)£13.99, £14.99, £16.99$18.64, $19.98, $22.64€16.60, €17.79, €20.16
Premium by the month, and Premium+Shown under Pay plan in the appVariesVaries
BumbleCoins, pack of 1£1.99$2.65€2.36

Prices can differ by age, platform and account, so two friends in the same Leeds flat may see different numbers.

The cheapest way to pay. Decide what you need first. If it is simply more likes, Boost costs far less than Premium. If it is Travel Mode for a fortnight in Lisbon, a 7-day Premium plan at £9.99 covers the useful part. For longer stretches, Bumble’s own guidance is that longer plans work out cheaper per week, so compare the weekly cost on the Pay plan screen before tapping buy, and set a reminder to cancel if you do not want it to roll on.

Bumble promo codes, student discounts and free trials: what exists

The short answer: none of the three. Bumble’s help centre states plainly that it does not currently offer a way to redeem promo codes, so any “Bumble promo code” on a voucher site will not work at checkout. There is no published student discount and no standing free trial.

What does exist are occasional limited-time offers, which Bumble shows as banners inside the app rather than codes. If you are not in a hurry, it is worth waiting a few days after downloading to see whether one appears. Otherwise, the real saving is choosing the right tier and the right length, as above.

Who owns Bumble and who uses it

Bumble is owned by Bumble Inc., a Nasdaq-listed company based in Austin, Texas. It is not part of Match Group, which owns both Tinder and Hinge. Whitney Wolfe Herd, a Tinder co-founder, launched Bumble in 2014 and returned as CEO in 2025. The group also owns Badoo and BFF, its friend-finding app.

Bumble does not publish a headline figure for total users. Its results for the second quarter of 2026 show 2.1 million paying users on the Bumble app, down from 2.5 million a year earlier, and Bumble app revenue of $171.7 million (about £128.8 million) for the quarter, down 14.7%. Each paying user brought in an average of $27.55 a month. The company says it is rebuilding its matching algorithms and planning more in-person and group features.

In practice Bumble is busiest in big cities and university towns: think London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol in the UK. It is open to everyone aged 18 and over, with options for nonbinary users expanded in 2022, and same-sex matches never followed the old women-first rule in quite the same way. Bumble does not publish a count of the countries it operates in, and it says paid features cannot be sold in some locations for legal reasons.

Bumble BFF: the friends app

BFF is Bumble’s separate app for platonic friendships, and it does not charge for its core features. It relaunched in the US in September 2025, and Bumble excludes it from its revenue figures. For someone who has just moved to London and wants a running partner or a pub quiz team, it is a lower-pressure alternative to Meetup.

Bumble features that matter: filters, Travel Mode and Incognito

Matching. Bumble still runs on swiping. Profiles mix photos with written prompts, and Opening Moves lets you set a question for matches. Bumble says it is reworking its algorithms during 2026.

Video and voice. Free for everyone once you match, and a sensible step before meeting a stranger from the internet for a drink in Ancoats.

Advanced filters (Premium). Narrow your queue by things such as what someone is looking for or lifestyle choices, beyond the free age and distance settings.

Incognito (Premium). Your profile is only shown to people you have liked first. Useful if you would rather your colleagues did not spot you over their lunch break.

Travel Mode (Premium). Change your location to another city, which Bumble pitches at people planning a trip or new to town. Matching in Glasgow a week before you move there is a fair use of a 7-day plan.

SuperSwipe, Spotlight and Notes. A SuperSwipe tells someone you are especially keen before you match. Spotlight moves your profile to the front of the queue for a set time. Notes, formerly Compliments, let you send a short message before matching. All can be bought singly or come weekly with Boost and Premium+.

Is Bumble safe? Verification, moderation and privacy

Bumble’s safety tools are among the more thorough in the market. Photo verification checks that a person matches their pictures, and ID verification lets members prove who they are. Private Detector blurs images that may be explicit, leaving you to decide whether to open them. Deception Detector, an AI tool backed by human moderators, works in the background to flag fake profiles and scams. Weapons are banned from photos, there is a zero-tolerance policy on hate and harassment, and block, report and unmatch are a tap away.

On privacy, two matters are on the record. In 2024, Bumble and Badoo agreed a $40 million settlement of a US class action brought under Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act, covering users in Illinois between November 2016 and December 2021 who alleged facial data had been collected without proper consent. In June 2025, the European privacy group noyb filed a complaint with the Austrian data protection authority over an AI Icebreakers feature in Bumble for Friends, powered by OpenAI, arguing it used profile data without consent under the GDPR.

Bumble’s App Store privacy label says it may use location, contact details, identifiers and usage data to track users across other companies’ apps and websites. Check the settings in the app if that matters to you.

What users say about Bumble

Ratings depend heavily on where you look. On the UK App Store Bumble scores 4.2 out of 5 from 276,000 ratings. On Trustpilot it scores 1.3 out of 5 from 2,598 reviews, with 87% of those at one star. On Google Play in the UK it scores 3.8 from about 1.58 million reviews. Trustpilot tends to attract people with a grievance, often about billing or quiet inboxes, while the App Store captures more casual users.

On the positive side, one UK App Store reviewer, Baggies1879, wrote: “I spent a few minutes swiping and getting used to how it all works then 4 hours later I got a match.” On Trustpilot, Gary S from Great Britain was blunter in September 2026: “Don’t bother, nothing happens on here.”

Both are fair snapshots. Results on any dating app depend on your city, your profile and how much patience you bring.

How to sign up for Bumble, build a good profile and cancel

Signing up

  1. Download Bumble from the App Store or Google Play, or sign up at bumble.com.
  2. Register with your phone number, Apple ID or Google account.
  3. Choose dating or friends, add your basics and set who you would like to see.
  4. Complete photo verification. It takes a minute and helps others trust your profile.

Building a profile that gets replies

  1. Use four to six recent photos, with at least one clear, unfiltered face shot and no group photo as your first picture.
  2. Answer two or three prompts with something specific: the best pie in Wigan beats “I love food”.
  3. Set an Opening Move so matches have something easy to reply to.
  4. Fill in the basics you care about, such as what you are looking for, so filters work in your favour.

Cancelling a subscription

  1. iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Bumble and tap Cancel Subscription.
  2. Android: open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, choose Bumble and tap Cancel Subscription.
  3. Paid by card, PayPal or Apple Pay through Bumble: in the app, tap your profile icon, then Subscription details, Manage your subscription, and cancel.
  4. Deleting the app does not by itself cancel a store subscription, so cancel first. Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases are handled by Apple or Google, and Bumble notes you may lose paid features straight away if a refund is approved.

Bumble vs Tinder vs Hinge: which dating app suits you

Pick Bumble if you like a calmer, more moderated inbox, want strong safety tools or are also after friends through BFF.

Pick Tinder if you want the biggest pool in most UK cities and are happy to swipe your way through it, or you are travelling and want to meet people quickly.

Pick Hinge if you are firmly after a relationship and prefer replying to prompts and photos over rapid swiping.

Plenty of people run two at once; there is no rule against it, just a limit on how many conversations you can keep up.
