eharmony Review: Compatibility Scores of 60 to 140, a Six-Month Minimum and Premium £149.99

eharmony UK review: what Basic gives you free, Premium Light, Plus and Extra prices, the compatibility quiz, safety, cancelling, and Hinge and Match.

eharmony Review: Compatibility Scores of 60 to 140, a Six-Month Minimum and Premium £149.99

eharmony is the dating service for people who would rather fill in a questionnaire than swipe through a hundred faces on the bus. It has been matching singles on compatibility since 2000, and the questionnaire is still the point. The catch is that you cannot see a single photo without paying, and paying means a commitment of at least six months.

eharmony Promo Code box

  • Promo Code: none needed. eharmony’s own help pages say that “as a rule, eharmony doesn’t do coupons”.
  • Best real saving: take the longest plan you are comfortable with. Premium is sold in 6, 12 and 24-month terms, and the longer terms cost less per month. On the UK App Store, the cheapest Premium item listed is Premium PLUS at £149.99, though Apple does not show which term it covers.
  • Worth knowing: Basic members are sometimes shown a reduced price on the subscription page itself, particularly around Valentine’s Day and other seasonal moments.

Verdict

eharmony is the most old-fashioned of the big dating brands, and for some people that is exactly the appeal. The quiz does real work, the matches arrive with a compatibility score, and the paywall keeps out much of the idle browsing that clogs swipe apps. Against that, the free plan is close to a shop window, the pricing is hard to see before you sign up, and its Trustpilot reviews are dominated by people unhappy with renewals and cancellation. Pay only if you are ready to give it six months, and diarise the renewal date the day you buy.

Pros

  • Compatibility Quiz and scores give every match a reason, not just a photo
  • Basic membership is free with no time limit, so you can see who you are matched with before paying
  • Inclusive sign-up: you can look for women, men, nonbinary people or everyone
  • 14-day cancellation and refund right on website purchases
  • Customer Care available 24/7, with replies promised within 24 hours

Cons

  • No photos at all without Premium
  • No one-month plan; the shortest commitment is six months
  • Prices are only shown after you register and finish the quiz
  • Automatic renewal for the same term, and a Trustpilot score of 1.8/5 driven by cancellation complaints
  • Verification is SMS only; no photo or ID check is described on the UK site

eharmony free vs paid: what Basic gets you without paying

Basic is free, has no time limit and is the default for everyone who joins. You take the Compatibility Quiz, eharmony builds your Discover list from people who fit your preferences, and you can send and receive Likes and use the messaging tools, including Icebreakers. Messaging on Basic is limited, though, and the big omission is photos: you will see a compatibility score and an outline of someone’s answers, but not their face.

Premium unlocks the parts most people assume are standard. According to eharmony UK, that means unlimited messaging with all members, all member photos, seeing who has viewed you, distance search, a bespoke Personality Profile and dedicated Customer Care. A Basic member can also buy the Personality Profile on its own, and there are separately priced extras called Match Unlocks.

In practice, Basic is a long, free look round the room. A new arrival in London can join, answer the quiz and see whether the local pool looks promising before spending anything. Anyone hoping to arrange a first drink in Manchester by Friday will need to pay.

eharmony Premium prices: Light, Plus and Extra plans in pounds

eharmony does not publish UK prices on its open pages. Its cost page says prices appear on the Subscription page, reached by clicking Upgrade to Premium after you log in, and that the price depends on the length of the term. The UK FAQ lists 6, 12 and 24-month Premium plans and says plainly that you cannot pay for one month. There are no weekly plans.

The clearest public list of UK prices is the in-app purchase section of the UK App Store listing. eharmony does not label term lengths there, so treat the table as the menu of prices rather than a like-for-like comparison.

UK App Store item£$€
Premium PLUS£149.99$199.88€177.99
Premium light£189.99$253.18€225.46
Premium PLUS£209.99$279.83€249.20
Premium light£219.99$293.16€261.06
Premium light£289.99$386.44€344.13
Premium PLUS£349.99$466.40€415.33
eHarmony Basic£44.99 to £139.99 (four items)$59.95 to $186.55€53.39 to €166.13

The store does not say what the paid “eHarmony Basic” items cover, so read the in-app description before buying one.

In the US, third-party price trackers list the tiers by term: Premium Light for six months, Premium Plus for 12 and Premium Extra for 24, all with the same features and only the length differing. eharmony UK does not say whether its tiers follow the same pattern. The pattern is the usual one: the longer you commit, the lower the monthly cost. If the £149.99 item is a 12-month plan, it works out at about £12.50 a month. One Trustpilot reviewer in the UK reported paying £96 for a year, which suggests the web subscription page often shows lower prices than the store.

Cheapest way to pay: register free, finish the quiz, then compare the website’s Subscription page with the in-app price before buying. Website purchases carry the 14-day cancellation right, which App Store and Google Play purchases do not. eharmony accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express credit cards, Visa or Mastercard debit cards, and PayPal.

eharmony discounts, promo codes and student deals: what exists and what doesn’t

eharmony’s UK help page answers this directly: “As a rule, eharmony doesn’t do coupons.” What it does instead is show discounts to Basic members on the subscription page, with the reduced price already applied, and run seasonal offers around Valentine’s Day, other holidays and changes of season. It also says it periodically offers free trials to new members, though none was advertised when we checked.

There is no student discount, no NHS or armed forces discount and no official promo code. Voucher sites list “deals” such as 25% off Premium, but these link to eharmony’s normal pages rather than to a code, and US codes found on comparison sites are not offered on the UK site. eharmony does sell gift subscriptions, which is worth knowing if a friend has been talking about it.

Who owns eharmony and who uses it

eharmony was founded on 22 August 2000 in Pasadena, California, by clinical psychologist Neil Clark Warren and his son-in-law Greg Forgatch, and is based in Los Angeles. Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 bought it in 2018, and in 2020 it became part of ParshipMeet Group alongside Parship and The Meet Group. In March 2025 ProSiebenSat.1 agreed to buy out the minority stake held by General Atlantic and become sole owner of ParshipMeet Group. The UK service is run by eHarmony UK Ltd, registered in Altrincham, Cheshire.

The company says it has “helped over 2 million people find love”, and its homepage claims someone finds love on eharmony every 14 minutes, without giving a source. It does not publish UK member numbers or an age breakdown. It runs separate country sites, including the UK, US, Canada and Australia, and you must be 18 or over to join.

Its reputation leans towards people who want something serious, and the brand is happy with that. Sign-up asks whether you are looking for women, men or nonbinary people, and you can choose to see everyone; the UK site says it has worked with GLAAD on staff training and changes to matchmaking. That is a long way from the early years, when same-sex matching was only offered through a separate site, Compatible Partners, following legal settlements in New Jersey and California.

eharmony’s compatibility quiz and the features that matter

The Compatibility Quiz. Everyone takes it on joining, and it drives the whole service. eharmony’s own guide puts it at about 20 minutes, covering your personality, likes and dislikes, communication style and what drives you, and you can save your progress and finish later. eharmony advises against retaking it, but offers a retake when you renew Premium.

Compatibility scores. Each match comes with a score between 60 and 140. eharmony calls 100 a good average and 110 or more a high level of compatibility, while suggesting you do not write off anyone below 100.

Discover, Likes and Icebreakers. Discover shows every member who fits your search preferences. Likes signal interest, and Icebreakers give you a low-stakes way to start a conversation.

Vibe Check. A newer tool for spotting what you have in common with someone before you commit to messaging.

Filters and distance search. You can organise matches with filters; distance search is a Premium feature.

Profile visibility. You can hide your profile from Data & settings if you want a break, without deleting it.

Video and travel mode. No travel or passport mode is advertised. eharmony added Video Date in April 2020: once you and a match have exchanged at least three messages, you can video call inside the service without sharing a phone number.

Is eharmony safe? Verification, moderation and privacy

eharmony UK says it has a dedicated Trust & Safety team, available seven days a week, using “best in class tools and technology combined with human review”. It says it routinely reviews accounts for inconsistent or suspicious behaviour, that members can report and block matches, and that you may get an email if a match is removed for suspicious activity or false information. Photos are checked before going live.

Verification is lighter than on swipe apps. eharmony offers optional SMS verification, which adds an SMS Verified symbol to your profile. The UK site does not describe a selfie, photo or ID check.

On privacy, the UK App Store listing discloses that the app collects data that may be used to track you, including purchases, identifiers and usage data, and that data linked to you includes location, contact details, user content and sensitive information. The record includes some regulatory history. In 2018 the UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled that an eharmony advert claiming its matching was “scientifically proven” was misleading. In September 2023 Australia’s competition regulator, the ACCC, took eharmony to court over alleged misleading statements and an automatic renewal practice. In August 2026 the Federal Court found that eharmony had misled consumers over automatic renewal, minimum subscription periods and its monthly pricing; penalties are still to be decided. In June 2012 eharmony confirmed that some member passwords had been posted online, describing those affected as “a small fraction” of its members.

What users say about eharmony

The ratings tell two stories. On the UK App Store, eharmony scores 3.8/5 from 5.5k ratings. On Trustpilot, its UK site scores 1.8/5 from 5,262 reviews, 73% of them one-star, and Trustpilot notes the company has not replied to negative reviews. Most complaints concern renewals, refunds and the length of commitment rather than the matching itself.

“I wish I had researched eHarmony’s cancellation practices before giving them my payment details,” wrote Mack, from the UK, on Trustpilot in September 2026.

The happy customers tend to be brief. “Great love it,” wrote Khalid Mohamed, also from the UK, in a five-star Trustpilot review the same month.

How to join eharmony, build a good profile and cancel your subscription

  1. Download the app or go to eharmony.co.uk and register free. You must be 18 or over.
  2. Choose your gender and who you would like to meet: women, men, nonbinary people or everyone.
  3. Take the Compatibility Quiz in one sitting and answer honestly. It shapes every match you will see, and retakes are only offered on renewal.
  4. Add several recent, clear photos. eharmony approves photos before they appear.
  5. Fill in your profile properly. On a service built around compatibility, a blank profile undoes the effort you put into the quiz.
  6. Turn on SMS verification to add the badge to your profile.
  7. Browse Discover and send Likes or Icebreakers for free before deciding whether to upgrade.
  8. If you buy Premium, put the renewal date in your calendar straight away.
  9. To stop renewal on a website subscription, go to Data & Settings, then Manage profile, then Amend subscription, before the term ends, or write to Customer Care. The subscription ends at the close of the current term, with no refund for that period.
  10. To cancel within 14 days of your purchase confirmation email, contact Customer Care. You will be refunded to your original payment method within 14 days, less a reasonable amount if you have used the service.
  11. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your Apple or Google account settings; the 14-day eharmony refund right does not apply.
  12. To delete your profile entirely, use Data & settings, then the delete link under Profile Status. Members with an active subscription must contact Customer Care first.

Who should pick which: eharmony suits people who want the service to do the filtering and are happy to commit for months at a time. Match suits those who prefer to search on their own terms and browse before paying. Hinge suits anyone who wants to message for free, judge people by their prompts as much as their photos, and keep the option of not paying at all.
