Bitdefender is the antivirus that rarely makes headlines and almost always tops the test tables. It is the kind of software you install, forget about and only notice when it quietly stops something nasty. The Romanian company sells a confusing number of plans, though, and the price you pay depends a great deal on where you live and when your first year ends. Here is what each plan includes, what the labs say and where the catches are.

What Bitdefender is and who owns it

Bitdefender was founded in 2001 by Florin Talpeș and Mariuca Talpeș, whose software business in Bucharest dates back to 1990. The company says it protects millions of consumers and thousands of businesses in 170 countries. Alongside its consumer suites it sells business security under the GravityZone name, and it has released free ransomware decryptors for victims of several strains.

For home users the line-up runs from a free Windows antivirus to Ultimate Security Plus, which adds US identity theft insurance. Most people will choose between three plans: Total Security, Premium Security and Ultimate Security.

Bitdefender prices and plans

Bitdefender sells through regional storefronts, so prices, currencies and occasionally plan names differ between the US, the UK and the rest of Europe. The figures below are the first-year prices on Bitdefender’s US consumer store; sterling and euro figures are conversions, and your local store will show its own price at checkout. All plans renew automatically after year one at Bitdefender’s renewal price.

Total Security is the core suite: anti-malware, ransomware protection, anti-phishing, web attack prevention, cryptomining protection, a rescue environment for stubborn rootkits, a privacy firewall, webcam and microphone protection, Safepay for online banking, and a password manager. The VPN is capped at 200MB per device per day, about 6GB a month, which covers banking on café Wi-Fi but not streaming.

Premium Security is the plan most people should consider, because it removes the VPN cap. Bitdefender also lists a 2-year Premium Security option at US$159.99 (£120.06 / €142.49) for an individual and US$199.99 (£150.07 / €178.11) for a family.

Ultimate Security adds identity monitoring. Ultimate Security Plus, sold only to US citizens with a Social Security Number, adds identity theft insurance of up to US$1 million on the Standard version and up to US$2 million on Extended, with one-bureau or three-bureau credit monitoring respectively.

Readers who only want the VPN can buy Bitdefender Premium VPN separately; inside the iPhone app it is listed at US$69.99 (£52.52 / €62.33) a year or US$6.99 (£5.25 / €6.23) a month.

On discounts, Bitdefender’s offer pages advertise savings of up to 80% on first-year prices, and the official pages we checked do not list a student discount. As with most security software, the first-year price is the bait and the renewal is where the real cost lies, so set a calendar reminder a month before the year is up. Bitdefender emails you 30 days before expiry, and you can switch off auto-renewal in Bitdefender Central or by emailing cancel@bitdefender.com.

Free antivirus and the 30-day free trial

Bitdefender Antivirus Free is a genuinely free, Windows-only product with no time limit. It gives you real-time malware protection, customisable scans, basic ransomware protection, Advanced Threat Defense and a VPN capped at 200MB a day. It leaves out anti-tracking, full-system analysis and the productivity and entertainment modes, and you need a Bitdefender Central account to install it. Bitdefender re-engineered it from scratch in 2022, so older reviews of the previous free edition no longer apply.

A worked example: the family plan saving

Picture a family of four in Bristol: two parents with an iPhone and a Windows laptop each, a teenager with an Android phone and a shared MacBook, and a grandparent in Malaga on a tablet.

Buying Total Security Individual for each of five people would cost 5 × US$59.99, or US$299.95 (£225.08 / €267.14) in the first year. Bitdefender’s suites run on Windows 7 SP1, 8.1, 10 and 11 (2GB of RAM and 2.5GB of disk space), macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later, iOS 14 or later and Android 7.0 or later. The paid suites are sold worldwide through regional stores; identity theft insurance is the exception and is limited to US citizens.

Independent lab results

This is where Bitdefender earns its reputation. In AV-TEST’s Windows test for July and August 2026, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 scored the maximum 6 out of 6 for protection, performance and usability, earning a Top Product award. AV-Comparatives named Bitdefender a Top-Rated Product in its 2025 consumer awards, published in March 2026. Bitdefender also cites an AV-TEST protection average of 5.96 out of 6 between January 2011 and August 2026.

The rivals are close. Norton 360, McAfee Total Protection and Malwarebytes Premium also scored 6/6/6 in the same AV-TEST round, and Norton was also a Top-Rated Product at AV-Comparatives. Bitdefender’s edge is consistency over many years rather than one standout result.

How to sign up and use Bitdefender

1. Choose your plan on Bitdefender’s site, or start the 30-day free trial.
2. Create a Bitdefender Central account. This is where your subscription and devices live.
3. Install the app on your first device from Central, then use “Install protection” to send download links to other devices.
4. Let the first scan run, then leave Autopilot on; it handles most decisions without prompts.
5. On Premium or Ultimate, open the VPN in the app and set it to connect automatically on unsecured Wi-Fi.

Privacy and security

The gap between the app stores and Trustpilot tells the story. People like the product: reviewers praise reliable detection, a light touch on system performance and how little it interrupts. The complaints are mostly about money and accounts: auto-renewal switched on by default, renewal prices higher than the first year, cancellations that felt harder than they should, and sign-in or installation problems on new devices. A few mention the data cap on the basic VPN. Bitdefender replies to almost all negative Trustpilot reviews.

Customer service

Norton is Bitdefender’s closest rival on protection and goes further on identity cover in the US through its LifeLock bundles, such as Norton 360 with LifeLock Select at US$189.99 (£142.57 / €169.21) for the first year. Verdict

Bitdefender is the antivirus we would install on a relative’s laptop and stop worrying about. Its lab results are as good as anyone’s and have been for years, it stays out of the way, and the family plans are generous. Premium Security is the sweet spot, because the unlimited VPN removes the main weakness of Total Security.

The caveats are about money rather than protection. Treat the first-year price as an introduction, check the renewal price in your Bitdefender Central account, and decide in good time whether to keep auto-renewal on. If you are on Windows and on a budget, the free antivirus is a perfectly respectable start.
