The 2019 FINA World Aquatics Championships kick off in Gwangju, South Korea, on Friday, but the Water Polo World Championships don’t officially begin until Sunday, with the women’s tournament first to get under way.
The United States is a shoo-in to win the women’s competition for a third Championship in succession, having clinched gold in both the 2015 and 2017 editions.
The American women’s team are currently 1/5 (1.20) with 888Sport.com to take gold again in South Korea, with the Netherlands a distant second at 8/1 (9.00).
The men’s competition looks a lot more open, but defending champions Croatia are the favourites to retain their crown at 24/13 (2.85). Each of Croatia (2017), Serbia (2015), Hungary (2013) and Italy (2011) have accounted for the past four championships, though no nation has successfully defended the men’s title since Spain in 2001.
