Filipe Toledo remains on course to make history at the 2019 Corona J-Bay Open in South Africa this weekend after getting his competition off to a superb start.

The Brazilian dynamo is hoping to become the first surfer in history to win the J-Bay Open three years running, and he showed early intent after recording the highest single wave and heat total of day in his opening round performance.

Toledo told reporters after his heat: “That was the performance I had in my mind for the Seeding Round. To get that momentum and confidence is really important and only adds motivation.”

Jake Paterson (2000-01) and Jordy Smith (2010-11) have each won this event two years in succession, while surf legend Mick Fanning might have clinched three in a row had the 2015 competition not been ended by a suspected great white shark attack:

Toledo is a 3/20 (1.15) favourite to beat Michael February in the men’s round of 32 on Friday, via Unibet, before he launches another run at WSL Championship Tour gold.
